I can’t help but feel bad for Senator John McCain because if he were using his man of the people campaign strategy of the year 2000, most likely he would walk away a big winner in the race for president in 2008. However, after getting beat up by George W. Bush and team during the 2000 Republican primary, John McCain developed a strategy of, “if you can’t beat them, join them”; which will spell disaster for him as he tries to get the GOP nomination and win the White House in 2008. The John McCain political campaign of 2000 would be a big hit in 2008, but now that McCain has decided to team up with religious conservatives in a year when people are growing tired of their influence in DC, I don’t see how he will even get the Republican nomination, much less win in the general election.
There is a right and a wrong time for everything and John McCain’s, “man of the people” campaign wasn’t ready for prime-time in 2000, but it is desired badly in 2008 after over five years of conservative rule by President Bush. I am beginning to wonder if there isn’t some reason why John McCain can’t seem to stick with a plan of action when running for the nations highest office? When I think back to Ronald Reagan, he ran for the White House more than once and just because he was defeated, he didn’t change his positions on the issues like Senator McCain has done. Personally, I don’t know who the real John McCain is anymore and I have a bad gut feeling that the real McCain is just another politician who will say and do anything to further his political goals.
While I may disagree with the decisions John McCain has made in his most recent campaign for President, no one should doubt the love this man has for his country and the tremendous suffering he has endured as a POW in Vietnam. However, just because someone is a war hero, doesn’t mean they are automatically qualified to serve as President of the United States. It very well may be that John McCain’s place is in the US Senate and that is where he will do the most good for his country. The media still loves McCain because he is willing to appear on their shows and give them straight talk. In the next year, many in the media will turn on McCain because rather than appearing on their news programs as a plain spoken man, he will start sounding like every other politician that is guided by consultants and managers during their race to become the President of the United States.
After next months congressional elections I believe there will be several new faces emerge as leaders of both the Republican and Democratic Party’s. Right now the folks in the know say it will be a McCain/Clinton battle for the White House in 2008. My money is one two unknown candidates who will run campaigns similar to the 2000 McCain for President race, which was the right race, but at the wrong time in American politics.
