The crazy nuts from Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas are at it again. This small fringe group first came to the attention of most Americans when their small congregation decided to protest at the funeral services of soldiers who were killed in the War in Iraq. The folks who are members of this small Baptist church blame all the world’s problems on homosexuals. Now, these “on the road protesters” are headed to Pennsylvania to protest at the funerals of the young girls who were killed by a “mad man” in a school there earlier this week. Some news reports say that this church group has changed its mind and will not protest at these funerals, but I will believe that when I see it. In their total madness, some members of this church believe that somehow these young school girls, “got what they deserved” when they were gunned down by a crazed man while attending school.
It does take all kinds to make this world go round, but there is no doubt that the US has some crazy folks who not only go to school houses to kill our most young and innocent kids, but we also have our fair share of religious fanatics who take up the cause of a single issue and make it their mission to punish anyone who disagrees with their narrow view of religion. It is just a matter of time before the members of Westboro Baptist Church completely self-destruct and from where I sit, this cannot happen soon enough. People in the US are fond of pointing out the religious problems of some people who follow the Muslim faith and yes there are some that use that faith to commit mass murder. However, the Christian community is not void of these types of crazy people either and unfortunately these folks from Topeka Kansas are giving Baptist and all Christians a bad name, just like Osama Bin Laden is giving a bad name to most Muslims.
The folks at Westboro Baptist Church should cause all Americans to think once again, about how dangerous it is to combine government and religion. I believe both have their place, but that place isn’t working together. The biggest problem is that people with deep religious convictions desire to spread their view of the real meaning of their religion to others, whether those folks want to believe or not. This is where the problems start because there are so many religions which make up this world and no one religion or group has all the answers for all the people. Just image what the US would look like if someone from this Kansas congregation served in the White House. It does not take long for folks to see what a disaster that would be for the country. I believe in God and I believe that the US Constitution was correct to allow people to follow their own religious belief system without government interference.
The real interference isn’t coming from government against religion anymore, but from the other direction. Some religious leaders and groups desire to impose their control over government and their goal is to further their religious beliefs at the expense of everyone else. One of the most difficult things to prove to people with a deep faith in their own religion is that they are doing harm to the very country they claim to love by their insistence on government following their belief system. It is so easy for these folks to see how some have taken the Muslim religion and used it to their own advantage, but they just can’t see that what they are doing is just as bad and could be just as dangerous if left unchecked. Hopefully, the next generation of Americans will finally learn the lessons which are taught in both old and new history about the dangers of mixing government and religion because if they don’t, our world isn’t going to be a safe place to live in future years.
