Petraeus Report Being Twisted Before Release

There are some politicians in Washington that are hoping for a negative success report from General David Petraeus next month. Yes, there are some politicians that are betting against the home team in order to score political points with a few crazy nuts that believe all war is bad. While I don't consider myself a crazy anti-war nut case, there have been times over the past few years when I have doubted the wisdom of the Iraq War and the motivations of President Bush for getting us into that war in the first place.

That said, the decision to go to war in Iraq was made by our elected President and supported by both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Now that the nation decided to go to war in Iraq, it would not only be wrong to just leave when things are not going our way, more importantly it would show that the United States can not stay in a fight till the finish. To me, General Petraeus seems to be an honest man with extraordinary intelligence. When he releases his report in a few weeks I hope to be able to read the full report on the Internet to find out what he is actually saying before the politicians start picking and choosing different paragraphs out of his report just to support there point of view.

I have been concerned in recent weeks as some Republicans and most Democrats seem to prefer a speedy U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq only because of their concerns about how current troop levels will effect their chances in the 2008 elections. War is a very serious thing for a nation to decide to do and while many people had reservations as to the wisdom of the decision to go to War in Iraq in the first place. The decision was made the right way and it would be wrong to just go home because ones opponent beat them up badly in the first half of the game. The United States would find it easy to win most conflicts early because of the amount of money we spend on the defense of our country. However, so far we have not past the test of endurance in the aftermath of war since the days and years after World War II.
