Some frozen pizza's sold by Totino's and Jeno's are being recalled because of a scare that e.Coli might have infected some of the pizza's. Products recalled includes: Totino's Party Supreme, Three Meat, Pepperoni, Classic Pepperoni, Pepperoni Trio, Party Combo and Combo; and Jeno's Crisp & Tasty Supreme, Crisp & Tasty Pepperoni, and Crisp & Tasty Combo. In recent days and weeks, recalls effecting food and most recently toys contaminated with lead have caused concern for many Americans about the safety of our food supply and the toys we buy for our children and grandchildren. It could just be my imagination, but food recalls involving e.Coli exposure seem to be more prevalent today than in previous years.
For over 200 years, Americans have taken pride in the fact that our food supply is safe to eat because of government inspection of the products. However, in recent years budget cuts have been made that have reduced the number of inspectors and the amount of food products that are inspected and tested before it is sold at a local supermarket. While I am a big believer in free enterprise, there is a place for government in our everyday life and the protection of our food supply should be at the top of the federal governments list of priorities. The really scary part of these latest contaminations of the U.S. Food Supply is that they occurred naturally. Can you image the damage a terrorist could do to the United States if our food supply was deliberately poisoned?
I believe the federal government has a fiduciary responsibility to protect Americans from bad or contaminated food and the most recent track record of letting sick people lead the way to recalls should be unacceptable to elected leaders in Washington. If budget cuts need to be made, please don't make them by firing food inspectors that are charged with keep our food supply safe. Americans want to trust their food supply and be protected from biological killers like e.Coli when we do our grocery shopping. For many people the problem of contaminated food has gotten so bad that eating anything raw or rare is avoided at all costs. The richest country in the world should have a safe food supply where customers are not treated as test subjects to find future food problems.
