Omaha mall killer, Robert Hawkins wrote a suicide note before he took an AK-47 rifle hidden inside his sweater into an Omaha Nebraska mall this week to kill Christmas shoppers and then himself. His suicide note, which was broken down into three (3) sections was both sad and terrifying to read. For such a young man to be filled with such hate and hopelessness to something I find hard to relate to. For most of us it is simpler to just view Robert Hawkins as just another crazy person that won't be around to hurt anyone else in the future. Like so many young mass killers before him, Robert Hawkins did receive mental health treatment during his life. However, it apparently didn't work because on his last day alive on this Earth he killed total strangers in an Omaha Nebraska mall before turning his rifle on himself. People that have studied human behaviors for decades are always available to television talk shows to explain murderous acts after the fact. However, what I would like to see are some of these expert helping regular mental health doctors discover who is likely to commit these mass murders before they occur and recommend treatment options to stop them from happening in the first place.
In a world filled with high priced video games, fast cars and low moral standards in school - today's young people are growing up much differently than people in my generation did thirty years ago. While I cannot actually put my finger on the problem, I do believe in some ways that today's youth are not taught that hard work and sacrifice lead to long term financial security and happiness. Too many parents are unavailable to help their kids out during those young years, so when children are bullied in school they just take the abuse and never talk about those feelings with an adult. Over the years, internal pressures continue to build up to a point where in a few people like Robert Hawkins they just explode in some kind of murderous rage before taking their own life.
Many in my generation love to blame societies problems on out a control young people that don't want to work toward success in life, but instead want everything handed to them the minute they graduate from school. Today's young people did not develop these narcissistic skills all on their own, most were taught how to be selfish by their parents who too often times have the exact same life expectations as their children. Rather than working hard to achieve success, today's fast and easy money via credit cards and long term mortgages have allowed young people to receive the finer things in life without putting in the hard work first to earn it. In Omaha earlier this week, eight people lost their lives because one young man decided that this world was not a place he wanted to live in anymore. I doubt if any one theory is the correct one to explain Robert Hawkins' murderous rage that caused him to snap, kill strangers and then himself. Of all the thing that modern medicine has been able to treat and cure, one of the most important things, the twist mind, is still around and causing havoc not only to the person suffering with it, but also other non suffering people that find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time when that twisted mind, snaps.
