A couple of months ago, President Bush was leading the charge to welcome 20 million plus lawbreakers into the United States as legal citizens. However, in the past week President Bush seems to have made a 180 degree turn in his stance on illegal immigration and that is good news indeed for the long term security of the United States. What changed for President Bush? I believe he finally started listening to the will of the people instead of big business special interests groups that care more about cheap labor than the security of the United States of America.
First and foremost, President Bush is a business man and he has long held the interest of small and large businesses close to his heart when making hard decisions. I too believe that capitalism is at the heart of why the United States leads the world in financial success, but small and large businesses do not carry a moral compass and that is where the federal government must come in to make the playing field fair. Almost everyone I have talked to over the past three or four months believes it is wrong to reward illegal behavior with some type of immigration reward system.
When this first illegal immigration amnesty law was first proposed in Congress a few months ago, it seemed strange to see such different folks in bed together to get something they believed so important to the United States passed into law and without public debate. Each side of this amnesty legislation has a different reason as to why they want to see it passed. Democrats want as many Latino voters as possible in future elections to better their chances of victory and the Republicans don't want to seem too nationalist which might turn off future Latino voters.
The only way true immigration reform will ever be passed by the Congress and signed by the president is when the U.S. southern border is secure. There are not going to be any shortcuts to easy passage of bad legislation like there was back in 1986. The American people are smarter than they were back then when bad legislation was passed in Congress and signed by a President that only made the immigration problem worse. Hopefully, President Bush will continue to strongly enforce the U.S. border with Mexico and when immigration reform legislation comes up again for passage he will have better luck winning because the American people might actually believe that he is serious about protecting the American heartland from terrorist and some folks that just want to take advantage of our overly generous personal welfare benefits.

Iraq Troop Surge Working Say Experts
It has been a long time since any really good news came out about the Iraq War, but recently some usually anti-war reporters and Senators are admitting that the U.S. lead surge into Iraq is working. While I have had my doubts for years about the wisdom of the Bush administration decision to go to war in Iraq in the first place, I am certainly open to good news coming out of this war that might ultimately lead to victory and an honorable withdrawal from Iraq in the near future.
I am troubled by certain democratic leaders and there almost eagerness to lose the Iraq War. In fact some democratic leaders like Harry Reid have already said that the Iraq War is lost and he wants to pull troops out of that country right away. It is total insanity to remove troops from Iraq when U.S. forces are turning a corner and might have victory in sight. If the democrats still need to blame President Bush for the Iraq War, can't they just condemn his first plan as being wrong because not enough troops were sent to fight the Iraq War in the first place?
There is still a lot of hard work that needs to be done in order for Iraq to stand on it's own two feet and while I once thought it might be best to leave this civil war torn country, I now believe that the biggest mistake President Bush made when going to war with Iraq was to commit too few troops to the after war mission in the first place. If U.S. troops continue to make progress in Iraq and some democratic politicians keep their mantra of bring the troops home today, they will begin to look foolish and unable to admit a premature mistake of total troop withdrawal because of their mistaken belief that the war was lost several years ago.
Whether a person be a Democrat or Republican the truth is that most Americans desire victory in Iraq over defeat. Unfortunately, some democrats seems to want to saddle President Bush with defeat in the Iraq War rather than doing what is right for America and those small minded and short sighted politicians will not be in power for long if the good news out of Iraq continues and they continue to spread old news about an Iraq War lost cause scenario.

100 Degree Weather Arrives In Texas
For days I have been hearing about the high temperatures effecting folks in the northeastern part of the United States and then today folks here in Central Texas are feeling the extreme summer heat as well as temperatures here hit 101 degrees today. Usually, people in Central Texas would have suffered at least a dozen days of hundred plus temperatures by this time of the year, but this summer started with huge, above average, rainfall in north and central Texas that had the effect of cooling everything off during most of June and some of July.
My wife and I decided to stay inside today as the outside temperature continued to rise and our air conditioner struggled to keep up with the ever increasing outside temperature. Some good news came today as local officials decided to open up Lake Waco for recreational boating and from the news reports on tonight's 10pm news, thousands of folks that had been suffering from cabin fever because of high water levels at local lakes were suddenly able to spring into action, put on there swim suits and go skiing on area lakes.
The TV weather guy just said that several more days of 100 degree plus temperatures are expected throughout Texas the next few days, so people that are especially effected medically by high temperatures are being urged to stay inside and avoid the heat as much as possible. In my job, I must travel over 100 miles per day on Texas highways and I always feel so sorry for those state highway guys that are spreading hot asphalt in August in this part of the country.

Minnesota I35W Bridge Body Search Continues
More than a week after a bridge collapsed sending terrified motorist falling into the Mississippi River, the search for more missing people continued today as a school bus full of children was finally removed from the collapsed bridge. Luckily none of the children on that school bus were killed, but I am sure they will be reliving that experience for the rest of their lives.
It didn't take long for politicians to recommend a tax increase in order to modernize bridges across the country, but thank goodness most people are telling lawmakers no to new taxes and instead telling them to better spend the billions of dollars that are already earmarked for highway construction projects. Washington D.C. wastes so much money everyday on pet projects for powerful Senators and Congressmen that for them to ask the public for even more money is ridicules.
Here in Waco, Texas I35 is a major roadway as well where hundreds of thousands of vehicles use that road for travel. Here in Texas there are also bridges that are old and not up to standards right now and hopefully our bridges will be fixed before some kind of tragedy happens a little closer to home. The major problem with major Interstate Highways, like I35, is the increase in truck traffic directly related to NAFTA. Now thousands of extra trucks are traveling I35 and other major Interstate Highways and most likely the government did not plan correctly and allocate enough money to repair roads and bridges after the NAFTA treaty was ratified.

Cradle To Grave Tax Policy Hurts Economy
In Washington and state capital's around the country, politicians are always looking for new ways to increase taxes on an already overburden population. In recent years, the big push for any new tax policy surrounds political talk of how this or that new tax will effect, "the children". The new mantra in politics today tries to paint anyone that opposes a new tax increase as somehow being again the children which that tax is suppose to help.
As time has gone by this "for the children" mentality has gone from crazy to down right insane as state governments are now funding children's programs with tobacco, alcohol, gasoline and even lap dance taxes all for the children. The dirty little secret about these sin taxes is that most of the time the money collected from the tax is put into the general fund and while education is part of that general fund the new tax policy is not generated directly for the children.
In my opinion there are already too many taxes on the American people right now and the only way to keep future tax increases in check is to fight like hell against any new tax even when tricky politicians try and say the funds will be, "for the children". Government has never been able to live within it's means and that also will never change, so the only thing that tax payers can do is oppose most new tax increases and force the federal and state governments to better appropriate the money they already have.

Merv Griffin Cancer Victim Dead Age 82
Just yesterday I was writing about the grave condition of Merv Griffin and this morning I wake up to find out that he has lost his battle with prostate cancer and died at the age of 82. For my generation, Merv Griffin was a household name and I remember as a young boy heading home from school and watching his afternoon talk show on television.
Later in life, Merv Griffin was responsible for creating the still popular syndicated television show "Wheel of Fortune" which is still a hit today all across the world. Even people in casino's are familiar with Wheel of Fortune because of the popularity of a slot machine by the same name. For most people like myself, the biggest memory we will carry of Merv Griffin is that billion dollar smile he always had on his talk show.
In my generation, talk show host like Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas were very popular on television. Just like Diana Shore and late night legend Johnny Carson. There are two things that really dominate my mind as I reflect on the death of Merv Griffin and those two things are the realization of my own mortality as father time catches up with me and my ever growing anger at the disease called cancer that takes the lives of far too many people.
Rest in peace, Merv Griffin. Your life touch the hearts of millions of people worldwide and the world is a better place because of you.
