George W. Bush The First Third Term President Since FDR?

Of course, I'm joking about President Bush winning and serving in a third term as our President, but the way most democratic leaders in Congress are talking these days you would think that President George W. Bush is on the ballot in 2008. Democrats are making the same mistake Republicans made during the final days of the second term of President Bill Clinton and that mistake is running against a guy that isn't going to be around that much longer. I guess there really isn't much left to talk about on the far left anymore now that President Bush not only beat them by continuing the War in Iraq when they were in the minority in Congress, but he continues to beat Democrats at every turn even when they have clear majorities in both the U.S. House of Representative and U.S. Senate.

When the 2006 congressional elections were over and Democrats took control over both houses of Congress, there were people like myself that had high hopes that they would march into Washington and do the right thing. Instead, all I have seen is a bunch a bumbling fools that try to blame everything from disease to natural disasters on President Bush, while at the same time having no original ideas of what to do to fix many of the worlds current problems. Running against President Bush was a sound political strategy during the congressional elections of 2006, but events and times have changed since then. However, democratic leaders have not changed their message to the American people.

The democratic take over of Congress is going to be short lived if Democrats in Congress don't find new leaders. What should have been a disaster for President Bush after the 2006 congressional elections has turned into a gold mine for him and the Republican Party because of lack of real leadership among Democrats. The American people are looking for real leadership and not a bunch of losers that blame everything in the world on President Bush. The fixation on destroying President Bush has blinded the democratic leadership in Congress and allowed what they feared most to continue and that is total power and control over their actions by President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Are there any real LEADERS left in the democratic party?

John Edwards - I Just Can't Warm Up To The Guy

During the 2008 presidential campaign I have tried to listen to all the candidates that are running for the White House and most of the time it is easy to figure out what each candidate stands for. However, when it comes to John Edwards I must admit I can't tell what this man stands for at all. To be honest, I think I have trouble believing his words because he has made his fortune suing other people for damages as a 'class action lawyer'. I do have strong personal feelings about men and women that do 'class action legal work' because I have seen on too many occasions, the actual victims of wrong doing get little in financial compensation while a few lawyers banked millions of dollars.

Maybe it is the $400 alleged haircut that he got while running for Vice-President back in 2004 or something as simple as his words just don't add up when I listen to him at debates. Right now I can't put my finger on why I don't like or trust John Edwards and that is driving me crazy. I do feel deeply for he and his wife not only because of his wife's current fight with cancer, but also because of the loss of their son many years ago. I can only image the pain that parents go through when one of their children is killed suddenly in an accident. I can relate to what cancer can and does do to a family member as it slowly eats away at the very fabric of their life.

Down deep inside I would like to give John Edwards a chance to win me over, but unfortunately that will probably never happen because of my conservative southern roots. I have always had a hard time trusting lawyers, even though many attorney's I have counted as personal friends over the years. While I am not sure, I think the reason I cannot warm up to the John Edwards for President campaign is because of his work as a 'class action attorney'. My mind keeps going back to all the sham cases I have heard about throughout my life where thousands of victims have been put into one group like a bunch of cattle and then once a case is finally settled, the litigants get pennies while the lawyers buy new Royals Royce automobiles to park in their new mansions.

Maybe this idea of a class action attorney as President of the United States is something I just can't get past when it comes to the presidential candidacy of John Edwards and I wonder sometimes if other Americans might also feel the same way?

Stan O'Neal's 'Golden Parachute' Worth $160 Million

Maybe I am just jealous, but I sure wish I could find a company to work for where I could do a terrible job, lose my employer over two (2) billion dollars and then have the company hand me a check for $160 million dollars as I was being kicked out of my office. For most people in the real world, the way large companies compensate CEO's like Stan O'Neal at Merrill Lynch has long boggled the mind. When regular folks like you and me mess up at work, we are fired and not offered the usual 'golden parachute' perks like multi-million dollar severance packages as a nice pat on the back for losing our company money.

I am a big believer in capitalism and I do believe that on the whole it is the best economic system the world has to offer. That said, there is something basically wrong with rewarding failure in corporate America even though large public companies have been doing business that way for decades. I know little about what Stan O'Neal did and did not do for Merrill Lynch during his tenure as CEO. However, the board of directors did not look favorably on his leadership when he lost the company over two (2) billion dollars in the third quarter of this year alone. From a purely public relations (PR) stand point these types of reward for failure deals that are handed out way too often by major companies sends the wrong message to everyone else that works for the same company.

While the United States has grown into the largest economy in the world by practicing capitalism as our bedrock business principle, there are areas where we could improve the effectiveness of this system of business. The first and most important aspect of true capitalism is the real fear that mistakes and failure can and will lead to certain financial ruin. In corporate America today, CEO's like Stan O'Neal do not face financial ruin if they make mistakes with other people's money, instead they get paid millions of dollars if they do their job right and they could potentially make millions of dollars more if they mess up and get fired for costing other people their hard earned money.

The only way this kind of cancer on the American capitalist system will ever be fixed will be when millions of stockholder refuse to hire CEO that are not willing to risk their own money along with the money of those they work for, the shareholder. Right now, CEO's are winning whether they do a good job or not and that can not be good for the long term interest of business in the United States.

U.S. Navy Battles Modern Day Pirates On The Open Sea

For most people the only pirates they think about are the ones in the movie series, 'Pirates of the Caribbean' or the ones that lived on Earth hundreds of years ago that made sea travel a dangerous experience. However, there are modern day pirates and they are becoming a larger problem everyday, especially in coastal waters off the continent of Africa. In recent days, the U.S. Navy has been sent to rescue various vessels that have been taken over by pirates with the latest being an oil tanker off the coast of Somalia. There have also been stories, over the past couple of years, about pirates trying to take control of 'cruise ships' and other vessels carrying valuable cargo.

When I read the story this morning about two (2) U.S. Navy warships that were dispatched to save an oil tanker from pirates, my thoughts drifted back to the saying - 'the more things change, the more they remain the same'. While crime on the high seas has always been a problem, in recent years that crime has gone more high tech and the tools to fight it have changed a great deal, as well. When I think about huge American warships, I envision jet fighters taking off from an Aircraft Carrier or large guns firing five hundred (500) pound projectiles dozens of miles with pin point accuracy. I do not think of U.S. Navy personnel fighting thieves for control of a civilian vessel.

The fact that at any given time thousands of ships are sailing the oceans of this world and contained on those ships are billions of dollars worth of cargo, it does make sense why pirates are looking for creative ways to steal from them. What is more worrisome to me is that terrorist could also become pirates and start taking hostages aboard cruise ships or even worse, hijack an oil tanker and try to explode it near a large city. The good news is that the U.S. Navy is on the job trying to protect the delivery of goods, in a timely way, around the world. While almost everyone thought the days of pirates was over, in reality very few things really change, they just take on a slightly different look and unfortunately a more deadly mode of operation.

Rudy Giuliani Attacks Hillary Early And Often

While most of the democratic field for President have stayed away from personally attacking Hillary Clinton, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has not been shy at attacking the person most likely to represent the Democrats in next years presidential election. Yesterday, I wrote about Barack Obama's new plan to start attacking front runner Hillary Clinton and I also discussed my opinion that Senator Obama might have waited too late to start up his attack on Hillary Clinton. No one can accuse Rudy Giuliani of not taking a front and center position attacking Senator Clinton, in fact I believe he spends more of his time on campaign stops and in nationwide presidential debates attacking Senator Clinton than he does other members of the Republican Party that are campaigning against him.

Rudy Giuliani has one aspect to his personality that the other main contenders in the GOP primary don't have and that is New York City spunk. The 'Big Apple' has long been known for it's knock down/drag out campaigns for mayor and Rudy Giuliani knows how to mix it up with a competitor without coming across as some kind of mean bully. The sad fact is that the other, so called, major contenders in the democratic field do not come across as strong leaders at all. In fact some of the comments and actions by John Edwards make him look more like a girl than a boy. Over the next few weeks we will see if Barack Obama has the stomach to attack Hillary Clinton in the same way Rudy Giuliani does every single day.

Rudy Giuliani has a tough spirited history that goes back to pre NYC Mayor days when his job was to put some of the most dangerous mob figures in the country behind bars as a U.S. Attorney for New York. Politics on a national level has always been considered a 'full contact sport' and when it comes to the race for the White House in 2008, the two toughest competitors are Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton. In recent days, Barack Obama has decided that it is also time for him to fight for the democratic nomination for President and for Obama supporters I hope this decision isn't coming to late to do him any real good.

I have believed for months that the race for the presidency in 2008 will come down to a battle between Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton and as each day of this campaign season goes by, I still believe that match up will become fact within the next few months. For a blogger like myself, a Rudy/Hillary campaign for President will be fun to watch and write about, because with these two fighters there will be few boring moments during the campaign.

Country Legend Porter Wagoner Dead At 80

It was sad news for me today when I heard that Porter Wagoner had passed away at the age of 80. When I was a young boy growing up in the Texas panhandle, 'The Porter Wagoner Show' was something my father never missed watching. Back during those days, Dolly Parton was his regular sidekick and in many ways her appearances on that show made it easier for her to become a superstar herself several years later. Long before country music, there was a format called 'Country and Western' music and Porter Wagoner was a big star in that music format.

It seems like many of the great talents of the past are starting to grow old and die. While I was never a big fan of Porter Wagoner's music, he did strike a cord in the hearts of millions of Americans during the 1950's and 1960's in rural areas of the United States. Along with Porter Wagoner, there were other 'Country and Western' acts like Bob Wills and Hank Williams that brought happiness to hard working men and women tending the field of this great country. Farmers of today have got it easy compared to what was required decades ago to grow the crops this country needed.

There were days when my father was young that men and women worked from daylight till dark growing food or other crops like cotton. Back then, there were few tractors and other heavy equipment around to help them, so they stood long hours in the fields each day working to earn a living for their families. Country and Western stars like Porter Wagoner gave these hard working Americans a small bit of entertainment that fortunately went a long way in helping to revive an overworked body by raising their spirits. Porter Wagoner will be missed by millions of fans that remember how his music enlightened their lives decades ago.

'GAP' Discovers Some Clothes Made By Child Slave Labor

Huge retail giant, 'GAP' announced today that an Indian company that did sub-contractor work for them allegedly used child slave labor in some of their factories. This story further validates the moral issues United States companies face when doing business overseas as the world becomes a larger global economy. While it does not appear that 'GAP' knew that this company from India was using children as slaves to make it's clothing, it does put this popular American band name in a tough spot. 'GAP' corporate officials said today that none of the cloths made by child slave labor in India will be sold in it's retail stores.

I certainly understand why a company like 'GAP' would seek out contracts with sub-contractors in India to makes it's clothing and the main reason is a huge cost savings to the company. As clothing manufactures and technical companies continue to farm out American jobs to cheaper labor in India, more of these tragic stories are going to appear in our daily newspapers. Most Americans take the liberty of their fellow human beings very seriously and when a story about slave labor is written about in the year 2007, most Americans find it hard to believe that human beings are still being enslaved in this modern day and age. The sad fact is, slavery is still alive and well in some parts of the world today.

While companies like 'GAP' get a black eye when a news story goes public about them supporting child slave labor in India, we consumers are not without blame in this issue either. Where regular people are to blame is by their indifference and not paying attention to what is happening to American jobs as globalization has turned many middle class jobs into a thing of the past in communities all over the country. All Americans want ever cheaper prices for retail good when we go shopping. That desire for quality and a low price has driven large retailers like 'GAP' to foreign counties where they can get their cloths made at a much cheaper price than in the United States.

Merrill Lynch CEO Stan O'Neal Out?

From all outward appearances, the 'board of directors' at Merrill Lynch are prepared to give CEO Stan O'Neal his walking papers as early as this week. What did Stan O'Neal do that put his high paying CEO job in jeopardy? Well, just a small thing like losing the company $2.3 billion in just one quarter. That was the largest loss for the company in over 93 years. Remarkably, there are some Wall Street experts that are rushing to the defense of Stan O'Neal, but most of them are not going on the record with that attitude. In the United States, CEO's are compensated based on their ability to earn profits for the shareholders and little else and when that effort comes up short, any CEO will not be employed long in a company as large as Merrill Lynch when they mess up this badly.

Before anyone gets all teary eyed about Stan O'Neal's plight, remember that while he was losing billions of dollars for Merrill Lynch stockholders he was, at the same time, earning himself millions of dollars as that companies CEO. There are few places in the world where true capitalism is practiced more strongly than in the world of CEO's at 'Fortune 500' companies. My guess is that Stan O'Neal will not be unemployed long before some other large company hires him to lead their company. Unlike regular employees that mess up and get fired, CEO's like Stan O'Neal live in a different type of world where success and failure can both be turned to personal profit.

While I don't wish Merrill Lynch CEO Stan O'Neal any ill will, his world of million dollar deals and a jet set lifestyle is not something most hard working Americans can relate to. Most regular blue and white color workers are compensated when they do well and are shown the door without a 'golden parachute' when they don't live up to expectations. However, CEO's do not live in a world where when they mess up they are punished for their misdeeds, instead they are given millions of dollars to leave and then within a few weeks end up at another large company where they start this whole process all over again.

UAW Next Strike Target - Ford Motor Company

Of course, no one really wants to see a strike at Ford Motor Company by UAW autoworkers, but at GM and Chrysler - short strikes did happen before a new contract was agreed upon. I have no reason to believe that there will not be a strike at Ford Motor Company as well, but hopefully if it does happen it will be short in duration just like the previous ones at GM and Chrysler. The last thing the U.S. Automobile Business needs right now, is a strike by UAW members. Toyota, Honda and other Japaneses and Korean automobile companies have been 'cleaning the clock' of U.S. manufactures for years now and the problem has gotten so bad that some people are discussing the possible bankruptcy of some American automobile companies.

When the UAW first decided to strike General Motors (GM) a few weeks ago, my first thoughts revolved around the 'killing of the goose that laid the golden egg'. However, much to my delight, I was wrong and there was a short strike against GM which soon lead to a new contract. Pretty much the same thing happened at Chrysler a few weeks later and now two of the 'big three' U.S. automobile companies have new long term contracts. Now the only company that is left to finalize a deal with the UAW is Ford Motor Company and I doubt if there will be much trouble there because the really big issues have already been worked out in previous negations with GM and Chrysler.

Once a new Ford Motor Company/UAW deal is finalized and voted upon, the U.S. automobile business can get back to the hard work of trying to save itself from huge foreign competition. I still have doubts as the the real life possibility that U.S. auto companies will be able to survive in this fast paced changing world, but there are some really smart people working in the U.S. automobile business and I refuse to outright bet against them. For the U.S. automobile business to survive in the long run, they must find a way to build cars and trucks that the American people are willing to pay full price for. In recent years, the only way Ford, GM or Chrysler has been able to maintain sales is by offering huge rebates or low interest rates to attract buyers. For the 'big three' to really be successful they need for American consumers to be 'standing in line' to buy their products without the added enticement of a rebate or low interest rates to close the deal.

Florida/Alabama Battle Georgia Over Much Needed Water

Nothing will turn neighbors against each other faster than a shortage of a needed commodity like fresh drinking water. There is a battle brewing right now between Georgia, Florida and Alabama over who gets what as water supplies dry up around the south. Last week, Georgia's governor wrote to President Bush in an effort to stop water releases from badly depleted Lake Lanier, Atlanta's main source for drinking water. Of course, drought conditions are not only effecting Georgia, but also the entire southern part of the United States which also includes Florida and Alabama.

While I feel sorry for Georgia, there are certain water sharing arrangement that must be considered so that states upstream do not block much needed water to areas that are down stream. More than likely, some of the water that is in Lake Lanier originated from outside of the borders of Georgia and I'm sure the Georgia governor would not like to see those northern states take the same hard-line attitude toward Georgia that he is taking against Alabama and Florida. Human beings require fresh drinking water just to survive and when water supplies reach critical levels that natural instant to survive kicks in and often times logical common sense is thrown out the window. That is what I think is happening in Georgia right now.

Here is Central Texas we were also facing a terrible summer in 2007 because our water supplies had also reached critical levels after a multi-year drought. However, our drought broke during the spring when several feet of rain fell quickly over a one month period of time. At some future date the drought effecting Georgia and other southern states will also break and once again there will be an ample supply of drinking water. However, it is important that President Bush and other state and federal politicians keep a cool head about what is happening in Georgia, Alabama and Florida and not take action on some short sighted knee jerk approaches to this water panic situation.

Barack Obama Decides To Take Direct Aim At Hillary

My biggest question for Barack Obama as he announces that he is going to start talking about and taking direct aim at Hillary Clinton is, 'what took you so long'? All of the major democratic candidates for President have pretty much had a 'hands-off' policy when it come to attacking front-runner Hillary Clinton. In the past few months, both Barack Obama and John Edwards have used their wives to take pot shots at Mrs. Clinton while keeping the tone of their own person comments at bay. That was a huge mistake and now Barack Obama is going to take the gloves off and take direct aim at Hillary Clinton.

While I am glad to hear the news about Barack Obama going after Hillary himself, I think it is too late for him to make much of a difference in this years campaign for the democratic nomination. The best time for Barack Obama to start attacking Hillary Clinton would have been six (6) month ago when he was riding high in the polls and treated more like a 'rock star' than a candidate for President of the United States. Right now few people in democratic politics are talking about Barack Obama as a 'rock star' anymore, but instead the political wind has changed and most people think that Hillary Clinton has already won the democratic nomination for President.

While it was fun to watch Barack Obama attend political gatherings in the early days of his campaign for the democratic nomination, in recent months he has made several mistakes and has allowed Hillary to take control of the entire election process. The biggest mistake all of the democratic contenders for President have made is not attacking Hillary Clinton early and often. The 'Clinton Machine' is one of the best in politics and no one can beat them by taking an understanding and caring approach to winning the democratic nomination. Maybe Barack Obama still has time to turn his campaign around and defeat Mrs. Clinton, but with timing being everything in a political campaign, Senator Obama might have missed his best chance to win by waiting too long to go on the attack against Senator Hillary Clinton.

Antibiotic Resistant Staph 'Superbug' Threatens School Kids

Schools systems across the country are facing a new health problem that until recent days was mainly confined to hospitals around the country. An Antibiotic Resistant Staph 'Superbug' has been tracked in several states and has already been responsible for several deaths in schools in Kentucky and New York City. For years, research scientist have grown ever more concerned about these new 'Superbugs' that do not respond positively to antibiotic medication. For the past fifty (50) years, antibiotics have helped save the lives of millions of people around the world. However, in the early days of antibiotic creation, there were some doctors that gave these drugs to people that did not need them and over time new bugs were able to develop resistance to the medication because of over prescribing of antibiotic medications by doctors.

My wife and I were talking about this new 'Superbug' tonight over dinner and while I had heard of it on the radio during the week, I did not know how wide spread it had become and how concerned doctors and scientist had become about it's rapid spread over state lines. Over the years, Hollywood has released movies about killer bugs that infect people and no amount of antibiotics could save the person's life. It now appears that fantasy is turning into real life as new antibiotic resistant 'Superbugs' are being discovered each month. Like so many other illnesses, this Antibiotic Resistant Staph infection bug effects the very young and the very old to a much greater extent than healthy middle aged people.

As a young kid, our family doctor was fond of prescribing antibiotic medication every time mom showed up at the doctors office when my sister and I were sick. I'm sure that overexposure to antibiotics, when I was young, places me at greater risk if I unfortunately catch one of these 'Superbug's' in the future, antibiotic medication might not work on me. Over the past 25 years though I have made an effort to try and talk doctors out of antibiotic therapy if it is not absolutely necessary to get well. On most occasions my doctor has told me that I will get well on my own without antibiotics so I just went home and toughed it out without getting a prescription. With each new discovery of these 'Superbugs', I feel more confident in my decision to avoid antibiotics unless I am facing a life or death situation.

Tale Of Two Cities - New Orleans/San Diego

As disaster approached San Diego last week, many in the news media were quick to try and draw similarities between these two cities as disaster approached. However, there were not that many similarities between New Orleans and San Diego when hit by a huge natural disaster. In New Orleans, bad planning and poor leadership led to a disaster on the ground there long after the Hurricane came and went. In San Diego, rather than residents hunkering down at home or in rescue centers and waiting for the government to save them, they instead banned together and helped out their neighbors in a strong and proud way long before government officials even showed up to help.

This tale of two cities is very revealing in the fact of how different human beings react when a disaster strikes. In New Orleans, thousands of people sat at home or in the Silver Dome for days waiting for the local, state and federal government to come to their rescue. There were also daily reports of violent crime being seen on the streets and in the rescue centers as days went by without an adequate effort of help being made by government officials. To the contrary, in San Diego residents did not sit at home or in rescue centers waiting for the federal and state government to rescue them. They instead went about the effort of volunteering to help their neighbors in need and at one point there were more volunteers than people that needed help at one rescue center. The other good news is that crime was kept to a minimum in San Diego for the entire week.

This 'tale of two cities', New Orleans v. San Diego is not one of rich versus poor, instead it is one of self reliance versus the need for government to ride to the rescue after a disaster. Back in the 1800's people of great spirit moved westward in order to settle the new American frontier. I believe there is still a good supply of that spirit alive and doing well in California. From the firefighters that risked their lives to put out these fires, to the volunteers that showed up in record numbers to help out their neighbors without being asked, to state and federal government officials that did the right thing this time around.

The residents of San Diego showed the rest of us, this week, how to best handle a large natural disaster in the future.

FEMA Conducts Fake News Conference During California Wildfires

Just when everyone thought that FEMA was getting back on the right track after the departure of Michael Brown during the Hurricane Katrina mess, now reports are surfacing that FEMA conducted a fake news conference last week during the height of the wildfire in Southern California. Apparently, FEMA employees were used as reporters to ask questions of FEMA personnel on the ground during this fire crisis. No real members of the media were present during this fake news conference. When I first read this story last night, my first thoughts went back to the initial response by Michael 'Bownie' Brown, the Director of FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

I certainly had hoped that FEMA hired a better management team after 'Browie' made the Bush administration look like a bunch of 'bumbling fools' during the first few weeks after Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. In fact, FEMA was getting high marks through most of this week for getting the supplies and personal on the ground in Southern California, quickly. Then this fake news conference story gained traction and most likely it will cast a large shadow over the remarkable good work FEMA did accomplish in helping millions of people last week in Southern California.

There must be something different in the water in Washington D.C. for well educated people to actually think they can hold a fake news conference and somehow get away with it. I am sure that FEMA was just interested in getting the word about about their efforts as quickly as possible and that is why they decided to hold a fake news conference. However, I would like to believe that some grown up was in the room when this crazy idea was being discussed by FEMA leaders on the ground and that 'grown-up' would put a stop to it before the agency was once again embarrassed by a hair-brained choice. Much to my dismay, either there was not an adult in the room when this decision was made, or someone did say something and they were over ruled by higher ups at FEMA. What should have been FEMA's finest hour has now turned an agency that did good work in Southern California this week into a laughing stock once again.

Hillary Clinton Will Promise Anything To Win

Over the past thirty days, Senator Hillary Clinton has made some pretty big promises to voters on what she will do if elected the next President of the United States. The only problem facing Mrs. Clinton is that she withdraws many of these promises only hours after she first makes them to voters. In a world where Senator John Kerry found himself with a giant 'flip flop' label wrapped around his chest back in 2004, I really thought that Hillary Clinton was a smarter politician than he was. All the major democratic contenders seem to be running so far left that regular rank and file moderates in this country are starting to think we are once again living in the 1970's when George McGovern was seeking the democratic nomination against Richard Nixon.

As time goes by, in the run up to the 2008 race for the White House, maybe democratic candidates are thinking back to the Vietnam anti-war days of the Nixon/McGovern race and hoping that this time they will be able to set the record straight with an all out liberal win in a nationwide U.S. election. If that thinking is correct, Democrats should be sure to remind themselves exactly what happened to their side in that race between Nixon and McGovern. The end result was one of the biggest landslide victories in the history of U.S. politics with George McGovern coming out on the losing end of the stick. Frankly, Hillary Clinton and the other major democratic candidates for President are missing the boat when it comes to the real popularity of their liberal causes like an immediate pull out of U.S. troops in Iraq and a move to socialize the U.S. health care system.

To hard-core liberals like Hillary Clinton, the way to victory in elections revolve around promising to help the poor and some members of the middle class by punishing the excesses of the rich. This 'Robin Hood' approach to U.S. politics has been rejected by most Americans since FDR served in the White House and created the 'New Deal'. It appears that old habit die hard for some liberals and most of them just keep coming up with new names and techniques to push the same old agenda that hard working Americans have rejected at almost every turn. Ultra liberal politicians want to create a class warfare system where the poor are helpless and unable to take care of themselves without the aid of 'big brother' government. Right now, most Americans are more closely aligned with people like John Wayne and Ronald Regan than they are with Hillary Clinton and George McGovern.

Most Americans do not consider themselves victims and would prefer to work out problems on their own without much government interference into their personal life and choices.

President Visits Fire Zone Offering Money/Prayers And Hope

President Bush visited Southern California today in order to see first hand the damage that was caused by out-of-control wildfires that ravaged that area all this week. Yesterday, I wrote about my extreme pride in the men and women that risk their own lives in order to save the property of other people they do not even know. Today, I would like to take a different approach and talk about some political opportunist's that are trying to make 'political hay' out of these terrible wildfires and somehow put the finger of blame on President Bush. As I have said before, in 2006 I was so disgusted with rampant spending and corruption within the Republican Party that I voted a straight democratic ticket in that election.

However, after watching a democratic Congress under the direction of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for almost a year I am beginning to see the error of my ways. Both of these democratic leaders seem to have only one focus and that is to blame every bad thing that happens in the world on President Bush. Yes, I believe President Bush's initial strategy in Iraq was wrong and fool hearted, but now things are starting to look better on the ground in Iraq and some democratic leaders don't like that prospect one bit. With good news coming out of Iraq, it now appears that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have turned their attention to natural disasters and have somehow made normal 'mother nature' events the fault of President Bush. How stupid do these politicians really think regular Americans really are?

There have been wildfires in California before anyone alive today was ever born. They have happened before and they will happen again. I get so angry listening to some Democrats try to blame everything from Hurricane Katrina to the latest wildfires in Southern California on President Bush. It is almost like they have no original ideas to offer the American people except that they are good and President Bush is bad. I guess my anger at Republicans last November allowed these no good ideas politicians to take a position of power in Washington D.C. this year and that disgust with GOP politics has made the situation in this country worse and not better.

Today, President Bush did what he was suppose to do and that was to comfort Americans that have lost their homes to these terrible wildfires in California. While President Bush was comforting U.S. citizens in California, many democratic leaders in Washington D.C. were spending their own time and 'hot air' blasting President Bush for doing his job. It was a mistake for GOP voters to stay at home and/or vote democratic in the 2006 elections and many people like myself are going to correct that mistake in 2008.

Firefighters Display The Best This Country Has To Offer

Over the past fews days I have watched with marvel as firefighters have risked their lives to help total strangers in Southern California. While I don't understand exactly what is going through the minds of these brave men and women as they face down the worst that mother nature has to offer, I do know true heroism when I see it and these firefighters are the best this wonderful country has to offer as a vision of what the United States of America really stands for. The utter helplessness that people in San Diego and all parts of Southern California must be feeling right now is something I can only imagine. Almost one (1) million people have been displaced in one way or another over the past three days and many homeowners and renters are not out of danger, yet.

When I was a young boy I thought I wanted to grow up and become a firefighter. I never really understood that desire inside my heart, but I have talked to other people that had the same dream at an early age. I think so many people want to become firefighters because while everyone else is running away from a fire, they (firefighters) are the only people running toward the fire. There is something amazing that presents itself in the human spirit when we see ordinary people do extraordinary things. There isn't anything else in life that I consider more extraordinary than for a total stranger to risk their own life to save another. While watching some of the television news coverage the past few days, there were many occasions when I had to wipe tears from my eyes.

My dad, before he passed away a few years ago, was a volunteer firefighter in a small Texas town. I remember many times during my upbringing hearing him awake in the middle of the night, put on his black slicker and go into the night to help other people when their home caught on fire. Millions of volunteer firefighters risk their lives daily for no other reason than to try and do the right thing and to help a neighbor in need. The past couple of days, millions of people around the world have seen what true heroism looks like by simply turning on their television sets. True heroism is on full display this week in Southern California and I am so happy and grateful that this nation has a good supply of real heroes that are willing to face down fire and eventually win the day.

Are Environmentalist Responsible For California Wildfires?

First let me say that I believe there is a huge difference between regular Americans that care about the environment and crazy left wing environmentalist nut cases that don't have a lick of common sense when it comes to protecting humans and our property from catastrophic damage. As a young boy I remember public works projects that were stopped because a small fish called the snail darter might be endangered if water projects went forward. At that time I thought the idea of saving a little known fish was crazy and I could not believe that human beings were putting the interests of a small fish above that of other humans. Little did I know that extremism could not only stop dam projects that were needed by cities around the country, but now I am finding out that extreme environmentalist might be responsible for the wildfires that are ravaging people in Southern California.

People that choose to live in extreme environments like Southern California should understand that nature has a way of taking care of itself if we human beings just leave it alone. However, when it comes to extreme environmentalist there is no such thing as letting nature take care of itself when they think they can do a much better job with computer models and their elitist attitude. Mother Nature has taken care of dead undergrowth long before Americans ever claimed this land and nothing man can do will stop that process. What most extreme environmentalist don't understand is that Mother Nature is going to get her way, one way or another no matter how smart they think they are at tricking her with their computer models.

For years now, extreme environmentalist have prevented the clearing of dead undergrowth from desert lands in California and even more crazy environmentalist have prevent homeowners from cutting tall grass around their own property because it might endanger some rat that is considered endangered. I know that California is consider the last real bastion of true liberalism in the United States, but burned out homes and lives do have a way of waking up, even crazy liberals to the realities of life. Just remember, it doesn't make you a bad person to feel a responsibility to protect your home and family against crazy nuts that care more about animals than they do about you. These latest wildfires in Southern California might just be the wake up call that is needed to get politicians in California to care more about the people that vote for them, than some animals that might be on the endangered species list.

San Diego Wildfires Threaten Thousands Of Homes

I woke up this morning to the sound of rainfall hitting my roof as another cold front moved into the Central Texas area over night. It didn't take long for me to start thinking about the people in Georgia that are suffering through a terrible drought and also residents of Southern California, in the San Diego region, that are fighting wildfires and trying to save their homes. This morning I was visiting some of the major media websites and the pictures of these SCA wildfires are almost too graphic to believe. Apparently, many Southern California resident did not evacuate their homes when they were asked to yesterday, so valuable equipment and manpower are being redirected to rescue efforts instead of trying containing this massive wildfire.

Almost every year some part of California is effected by wildfires and this year most of the problems have been in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. The utter fear and terror of a huge wildfire heading directly for ones home must be a horrible experience. When you add to dry desert conditions, strong winds and low humidity it is easy to see how one of these wildfires can get out-of-control before firefighters even have a chance to put it out. When I was a young boy, there was a period of time when I dreamed up growing up and becoming a firefighter. Most likely, many young boys have that same dream but few actually follow through and become professional firefighters. At a time like this, thousands of people in Southern California are looking at firefighters as hero's.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders said late Sunday night that as this wildfire grows, it is likely to enter the city limits of San Diego some time early on Monday morning. I'm sure sometime today I will hear people talking about this wildfire and some will try and blame the people that live there for the problem. Most people have a hard time dealing with big tragedies, so they try and insulate themselves from events by convincing them self that because they don't live in a certain location, they are somehow safe. Whether it be earthquakes and fires in California or tornadoes and hurricanes elsewhere, there is no place that is 100% safe from "mother nature".

All most of us can do is pray for our fellow Americans in the San Diego area and hope that firefighters catch a break and they are able to bring these wildfires under control, soon.

Iraq War Soldiers Should Be Honored Not Hated

I was a teenager at the end of the War in Vietnam and I still remember the horrible stories of Vietnam Veterans being yelled at and spit upon when they returned from that unpopular war. During the first few years of the War in Iraq, American liberals did a great job of focusing their anti-war hatred totally on President Bush and Vice -President Cheney and keeping it away from soldiers that are serving on the ground in Iraq. However, over the past six (6) months, some liberal politicians have started to drift ever so slightly back toward the same opinions liberal politicians had during the Vietnam War and that is a huge political mistake for them to make. The politician that comes first to mind, for me, is Congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania.

A few years ago, a group of U.S. soldiers were accused of killing and raping a young girl in Iraq. Before U.S. military officials had a chance to investigate these allegations, Congressman Murtha went on television and proclaimed these young men guilty before an investigation eventually clear them of wrong doing. To put all of this into prospective, Congressman Murtha was a big supporter of the War in Iraq when it first started, but as progress slowed and insurgents and other terrorist started to get the upper hand a couple of years ago, John Murtha change his opinion and became a ranting anti-war nut almost overnight. For decades, Congressman Murtha was a leading supporter of the military in Congress, but something happened a couple of years ago and now he has little positive to say about the U.S. military or American soldiers that are risking their lives everyday in defense of this country.

Throughout history, the American people are very inpatient when it comes to wars that are not won quickly. People old enough to remember, can not forget how initial support for the War in Vietnam slowly drained until eventually most of the American public wanted troops removed from that country because they felt like that war could not be won. In recent months, the American people have begun to feel the same way about the War in Iraq and that public switch allowed anti-war liberals to step up attacks on President Bush and in their glee they also started taking pot shots at U.S. troops serving in Iraq, as well. Liberals will never win if they don't keep their anti-war anger focused on the "commander-in chief "and away from regular soldiers serving their country on the field of battle.

In every way that is important, American soldiers are the best this country has to offer and anti-war nuts are among the worst examples of what a real American stands for. I can understand anti-war feelings and I respect the fact that different Americans can differ on the War in Iraq. However, Americans that are unhappy about the War in Iraq need to focus that anger on President Bush and not let hysteria drift from the man that lead us into that war and let it drip down to the men and women that are doing their best to win the War in Iraq.

Hillary Clinton's Qualifications To Serve As President?

Conservative radio talk show hosts, like Rush Limbaugh, have been talking recently about the lack of experience Hillary Clinton has to serve as President of the United States. In actual resume terms, I must agree that Hillary Clinton does not have many job references that would lead a potential employer to hire her as the leader of the free world. However, the world of business and the game of politics are two completely different animals. The problem, with using the experience card as a negative campaign issue, is that most Americans do not trust career politicians or people that have run huge companies in the first place. In my opinion, conservatives would be better served by saying that Hillary Clinton is too experienced and too bureaucratic to serve as President.

What are the real qualifications needed to be a good President of the United States? My guess is if you asked 100 people that question, you would get 100 different answers. Some voters come from the old school that believe a person should work years and gradually work their way up the ladder of success. While other more modern people believe that experience can be a negative factor when it comes to leadership and running a country like the United States. If conservatives want to defeat Hillary Clinton their best option is to run against her based on her socialist attitudes about business and health care and not on a lack of experience.

Most certainly Hillary Clinton has vast experience in running a political campaign and when all the dust is removed from political campaign speak these days, the art of politics is one of the most important factors at running a large country like the United States. Where Hillary Clinton falls short is in the same area that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, suffered with during his term as President. That sore spot with both Hillary and Bill Clinton is in the fact that neither one of them really seems to have strong core opinions about anything. When President Clinton lead our country it seemed like every issues of the day was polled before he took a stand on that issue.

Right now I give Hillary Clinton a slight edge in next November's general election, but if Rudy Giuliani is the GOP nominee then all bets are off. While I believe Rudy Giuliani can and will beat Hillary Clinton in the race for President, it should be a fun campaign to watch as two (2) people that really don't like each other very much fight to win the right to serve in the highest office in the land.

Rudy Giuliani Works Overtime To Win Conservative Voters

Rudy Giuliani is attempting to win over social conservative voters by telling them that he is not their enemy and asking them to vote for him even though he does not share their pro-life abortion position. I must say that Rudy Giuliani's up front attitude toward social conservatives is something I have not witnessed in the national political arena for a long time. In recent campaigns, most politicians try and craft their positions based on political polling rather than sticking with their own core convictions and trying to get the American people to accept them anyway.

In contrast to Giuliani, other GOP front runner Mitt Romney has made major changes to his conservative positions over his career. The most notable change involved the issue of gays and the gay marriage debate. When Mitt Romney was running for governor of the liberal State of Massachusetts his attitude toward gay marriage and abortion was much different than it is today as he seeks the GOP nomination for President of the United States. I believe this "flip flop" on core social conservative issues has hurt him and continues to be a drag on the Romney campaign. I personally respect a presidential candidate that sticks with an unpopular position on an issue, rather than putting a finger into the wind before telling voters what they really believe in their heart.

I decided to support Rudy Giuliani months ago and I have discussed that decision here many times since. However, I have been quick to criticize Rudy Giuliani when he makes stupid mistakes, like when he kept getting those silly telephone calls from his wife when he was making a campaign speech. I have no idea if Rudy Giuliani will be able to win over enough social conservative support to ultimately be successful in winning the GOP nomination for President. However, I like his upfront attitude when he goes into the lions den, with his head lifted high and he doesn't back down from what he really believes to be right. In the end, this attitude might just be a winning formula for former Mayor Giuliani.

Drought Continues To Worsen In The State Of Georgia

I certainly feel bad for folks that live in the State of Georgia because they are suffering through a terrible drought and as a result, many large cities like Atlanta are facing the real possibility of running out of water if mother nature does not step in and give them a hand, soon. Like our neighbors to the east, Texas was in the midst of a sever drought last winter as years of substandard rainfall had caused most of our lakes and reservoirs to become critically low of water. Then like magic, the skies opened up and we received more rain than we could handle for almost three (3) months. I have always heard that when a drought breaks, it usually breaks "big time" and that certainly was the case here in Texas this past spring.

A couple of weeks ago, a cold front brought additional rain to East Texas and Louisiana and at that time a weatherman on MSNBC cable news said that he hoped that some of that rainfall would make it to Georgia. Apparently, not enough rain made it there so state officials are quickly drawing up water rationing plans to try and prevent what little water they have left from being used up before this drought is finally broken. Whether you believe in man made global warming or not, it is clear to most people that the Earth is warming and traditional weather patterns are changing quickly from year to year. When I was a young boy back in the 1960's, Georgia and most parts of the deep south always seems to get an ample supply of rainfall each year.

The old saying of "pray for rain" is most certainly alive and well in most parts of Georgia and I will add to that list of people my own prayers that mother nature will show some mercy on the good people of Georgia and send them some much needed rain, soon. While most news organization focus on water rationing and other regular consumer issues surrounding this drought, it is also important to not forget the thousands of farmers and their families that will not only suffer the same water rationing as people that live in big cities like Atlanta, but they also are not earing a living because no rain means no crops to harvest. The good news is that no drought ever lasts forever and most likely when the Georgia drought of 2007 finally breaks it will do so in the same way as it did in Texas only six (6) short months ago.

Rush Limbaugh Sets eBay Record With Senator Reid Letter

In the history of turning lemons into lemonade in American politics, radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has to take the cake. A few weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, became offended when he mistakenly learned from a liberal watchdog group, "Media Matters", that Rush Limbaugh slurred U.S. soldiers with a comment on his nationwide radio show. In quick knee jerk fashion, Senator Reid decided to get most of his democratic colleagues to sign a letter that was sent to the CEO of Clear Channel Communications in an attempt to get him to somehow punish Rush Limbaugh over these trumped up charges. To say that letter backfired, big time, would be a huge understatement because the facts of what Rush Limbaugh really said were not even close to the lies which were reported as fact by Media Matters.

Rather than sulking like a child, Rush Limbaugh came up with an idea that will go down in history as the best way to punish a political opponent that crosses the line when they are attacking you. Rush Limbaugh decided to take the original letter that Senator Harry Reid wrote and signed along with other democratic Members of the U.S. Senate and auction that original document on eBay as an example of abuse of power by Democrats in the U.S. Senate. Limbaugh claimed on his radio show that the entire weight of the U.S. Senate was being used to silence an individual American and once again Rush Limbaugh hit political pay dirt. The winning bid for the, Harry Reid, U.S. Senate letter that tried to "smear" Rush Limbaugh went for over 2.1 million dollars and Rush Limbaugh matched that winning bid and put in 2.1 million dollars of his own money, as well. Even Senator Harry Reid was taken aback by the amount of money that was bid to purchase the original letter.

All the proceeds from this auction will be given to the "Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation" which claims as it's highest mission the care and education of children that lost a parent in the line of duty. Rush Limbaugh proved, once again, that if his opponents wish to keep trying to silence him, they need to find better ammunition than a lie put out by a liberal political action committee. Even liberal leaning media outlets like "The New York Times" and "MSNBC" have reported this positive Rush Limbaugh story on their websites this weekend, which is in and of itself a further validation of how Rush Limbaugh turned the actions of Senator Harry Reid completely around by proving that the Senator's accusations were completely false. In the process of showing the world that Senator Harry Reid made a mistake, Rush Limbaugh came up with a creative solution that not only put Senator Reid's nose in the dirt, but helped thousands of slain Marines children in the process. Rush Limbaugh has to be this weeks big winner in the world of politics.

Hoda Kotb Talking/Fighting Breast Cancer

NBC "Today Show" contributor, Hoda Kotb, recently announced to the world that she is fighting breast cancer. Hoda Kotb is not along in her fight against this terrible disease and she is putting her fame out front in an effort to help other women that have already been diagnosed or someday might face the fight of their life against breast cancer. Fortunately, breast cancer does not run in my family, but other types of cancer do. Like all forms of cancer, the initial diagnosis can cause a tremendous sense of dread that sometimes leads to depression. By going public with her fight against breast cancer, most likely Hoda Kotb will be able to better fight against this disease. Too often, when a person is diagnosed with cancer they turn their thoughts and fears inward and sometimes cut off relationships with friend and family.

When people already have a negative attitude about life, they are less likely to open up and proceed with good cancer treatment options. Also, a long family history of cancer does lead some people to give up prematurely instead of following their natural instinct to fight for survival. Cancer has been a killer on my father's side of the family for generations and when my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six (6) years ago, he choose to not seek any type of potential treatment options to prolong his life. At first I was angry at his decision not to fight for every minute of life, but over time I have grown to understand his decision better. My father's brother died of cancer when he was only in his thirty's, years old, back when I was just a young boy. I was too young to even remember my uncle.

My mother has told me many times, since dads death, that the more my uncle fought for life back in the early 1960's against his brain cancer, the worse his condition became and eventually he suffered terribly before he finally passed away. I believe that one situation brainwashed my father, for the rest of his life, against aggressive cancer treatment. Of course, there are better ways to treat cancer these days than there were back in the 1960's, but my father never went along with those realities because of the painful scaring that happened to his heart as his older brother died painfully of brain cancer. For my entire adult life my father always believe that a cancer diagnosis should always be viewed as a death sentence.

The attitude of Hoda Kotb is completely different from that of my father and I believe she has an excellent chance of living a long life if she puts cancer treatment at the top of her priority list. As I have grown older, I believe that a positive attitude is just as important in defeating cancer as the medicines that doctors use to kill the tumors. I wish Hoda Kotb well in her fight against cancer.

$90 Per Barrel Oil - $100 Price Next?

Today, for the first time in history the price of crude oil went above $90 per barrel, but by the close of trading it dropped below that number ever so slightly. The entire worldwide economy runs on fossil fuels and when one part of that economy, oil prices, starts going up too quickly; other important economic foundations will start to suffer. Americans have started to grow accustomed to high gas prices, but the real shock is yet to come when our ancient oil refineries start to switch over from summer gasoline to a different blend this winter. Before this past summer, gasoline prices shot up to over $3.00 per gallon in many locations around the country when these same refineries made their annual switch from a winter blend to a summer mix. If crude oil maintains this current price or continue to rise further over the next two (2) months, we could be looking at $4.00 per gallon gas prices by Christmas.

I am old enough to remember what happen to the U.S. economy back in the early 1970's. Back then Arab producing states boycotted the U.S. and sent the our economy into a tailspin and at it's peak inflation was running out of control in the United States and gas lines were so long that it took hours, sometimes, just to arrive at the pump to fill up your car. While I don't see that same problem happening again, the really sad news is that there will be gasoline at your local convenience store this winter, but it is going to be much higher than it was last winter and if your home is heated with home heating oil, then you'd better get ready to take out a loan to pay for your winter fuel when that truck shows at your house. In the early 1970's I was too young to drive, but visions of owning my own car, later in the 1970's, were shattered when gasoline continued in short supply.

The crude oil problems of the 1970's were much different than the issues we face today. Back then, some Arab countries wanted to punish the United States. Today, the real problem is a growing worldwide economy where previous developing nations are hungry for the same crude oil as the United States. Decades of short sighted planning on the part of government officials and too much pressure being applied by special interest groups on both the left and right have lead to this growing and continuing problem. The United States will figure a way out of this problem, but any solution will not come without pain being felt by the consumer. While alternative energy sources will help in the long run, without more exploration and new sources of crude oil being found and brought to market in the short run, the United States could face a real chance of a recession within the next couple of years.

Ellen DeGeneres - Non Profit Animal Shelters

Last night when I returned home from work my wife told me about how Ellen DeGeneres started crying on her show a couple of days ago about how badly a non profit animal rescue shelter had treated her after she broke a contract and didn't return the dog she adopted, Iggy, to the shelter when her adoption did not work out. To make a long story short, most non profit animal shelters require the person adopting a pet to pass an interview before they will allow them to adopt an animal. Apparently, Ellen Degeneres went through this same process and before the animal is released, the person adopting the animal must agree to return the animal to the shelter if for any reason the adoption does not work out. Ms. Degeneres broke the contract when rather than returning the dog to the animal shelter, she instead gave the dog to her hair dresser who then took the dog, Iggy, home.

Once the animal shelter discovered what Ellen DeGeneres did they went to the dogs new owners and retrieved the dog and then placed it with a new adoptive family. Last night I went to YouTube and watched Ellen DeGeneres' tearful plea for the animal shelter to return the dog to her hair dresser because that hair dresser's children had bonded with the new dog and were devastated when the rescue shelter came by to retrieve it. This story proves once again that many people in Hollywood do not think they must play by the same rules as the rest of us. Ellen DeGeneres understood the rules when she adopted this pet because my wife and I adopted a pet of our own, less than a week ago, from another non profit animal rescue shelter and they make it very clear that if our adoption did not work out we were required to return the dog back to them.

As I watched Ellen Degeneres cry on her television show about how hurt she is that this animal shelter retrieved the dog and made her hair dresser's children cry, I thought to myself what a good example this has taught those young kids about doing the right thing in life. While Ellen Degeneres and many of her other elitist friends in Hollywood are use to doing the wrong thing and then crying afterward to get their way, this instance proves that sometimes when a person does the wrong thing there are REAL consequences for their actions. No amount of crying and begging by Ellen Degeneres got the animal shelter to change their mind and that lesson is priceless for these young kids. I write all the time here about how out-of-control Hollywood is when it comes to following the rules of life. Ellen Degeneres needs to grow up, continue to admit her mistake and tell her audience that the animal shelter did the right thing and it is HER responsibility to explain to these young children what can happen when a person, even a famous one like herself, does not follow the rules.

Turkey Set To Invade Iraq - Congress To Blame?

Turkey has mobilized troops on the northern border with Iraq and will most likely cross into that country sometime this week to fight Kurdish separatists that have been attacking them. While this cross border feud has been brewing for a long time, the democratic controlled Congress under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi has made the entire situation worse by allowing a congressional resolution denouncing Turkey for crimes of genocide against Armenians one hundred years ago to move forward. Anyone that has watched a newscast on television or read a newspaper since the Democrats took over Congress last November already know that most Democrats oppose the War in Iraq and they are trying to find anyway possible to get President Bush to pull U.S. troops out of that country as soon as possible.

To date, all democratic efforts to persuade President Bush to go along with their efforts to immediately start pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq have failed. At first, Democrats went the direct route of trying to pass legislation that will force President Bush to remove troops from Iraq. All of those efforts have failed, so now it appears that Speaker Pelosi and other democratic leaders are trying a different approach which could leave our troops in more danger if they are ultimately successful. While Turkey is no Garden of Eden, they have supported U.S. military officials in Iraq by providing landing privileges for U.S. military aircraft that deliver much needed supplies to our troops on the ground in Iraq. There is little doubt that the actions of the Congress are making the situation on the ground in Iraq worse for U.S. troops and they need to find another approach in their efforts to force President Bush to change strategy in Iraq.

It appears to me, a Washington outsider, that some Members of Congress have lost the ability to reason out good strategy in their battle with President Bush over the War in Iraq. This resolution denouncing Turkey for genocide, one hundred years ago against Armenians, appears at first glance to be more aimed at hurting President Bush over Iraq than it is to make a sound statement about wrongs that were committed in Turkey a long time ago. I know it is frustrating for liberal members of the democratic party to not be able to live up to their campaign promise that if elected they would get U.S. troops out of Iraq. However, the biggest mistake Democrats made in the lead up to last November's election was to over promise what they really could and could not do, to voters, if they won the Congress.

In olden days, it was fairly easy for politicians to promise one thing when running for office and then do something else once they were elected. However, in more modern times, voters have learned how to hold Members of Congress' feet to the fire when they over promise during a campaign. 24 hour news on cable television and an ever growing Internet have made it easy for the average person to keep up with promises broken by Washington politicians once they are sworn into office. I know many people oppose the War In Iraq and they also want to find new and better ways to beat up President Bush for getting us involved there in the first place. However, the democratic obsession of trying to destroy President Bush's Iraq plan, has caused them to make a fatal error in this denunciation of Turkey. The best thing Nancy Pelosi could do right now is withdraw this crazy resolution and hope that Turkey's decision to cross the Iraqi border will not result in the death of U.S. troops on the ground there.

Yahoo In Hot Water With Congress Over China

Search engine giant, Yahoo, is finding itself in "hot water" with the United States Congress over it's alleged release of user information to the secret police in China, which lead one citizen there being jailed for 10 years for violated state secrets. Yahoo is just the latest large company that has gone a rye with the United States government because of the companies desire to grow profits by warming up to the largest group of consumers in the world. With an ever growing worldwide economy, Yahoo and other large U.S. companies are working hard to get their brand name in front of new consumers in developing counties and in communist strongholds like China.

The world is a big place and not all nations play by the same rules as the United States. I can only image what goes on in board rooms at Yahoo and other major companies when they are planning strategy for growth in a country like China. In almost every way, China is a communist country that has decided to let the free market work as long as it doesn't hurt the old line guard that has ruled that nation for generations under a totalitarian government. Where does a major U.S. corporation draw the line between the need to grow the company quickly, while at the same time not helping governments like China silence the voices of people that long to be free? It certain would take someone smarter than myself to figure that one out, but it does seem that profits are at least currently put ahead of human rights when it comes to doing business in China.

This new China problem is something all major companies are going to have to deal with in the near future. In the old days, doing business was pretty easy when all companies were operating under the same rules and laws. However, in China the whole business environment is dysfunctional and if U.S. companies are not careful, the potential profits of billions of potential consumers will out weigh their gut feelings to do the right thing in their business arrangements. While the United States is a wonderful county because of competition, China does not yet really understand that concept. The proof is in how they are trying to build a free market economy, while at the same time holding on to an old style communistic government.

The very idea of capitalism is rooted in competition and beating a competitor at all costs. However, in the U.S. that means either putting your competition out of business or better yet merging with them to create an even larger and stronger company. The rules of true capitalism do not exist in China, which means that large U.S. companies like Yahoo need to put into place a different set of rules for doing business in that country than they have here in the United States.

Litigation Over Asbestos Cancer - Finding New Victims

Long before most people had ever heard the name asbestos or a cancer caused by asbestos exposure, mesothelioma, I was a young kid attending elementary and junior high school in old buildings that later turned out to have asbestos and were later torn down at great expense to my small hometown school district. Fast forward over thirty years and it is almost impossible to watch a news program on cable news channels like MSNBC, Foxnews or CNN without seeing a law office advertising for victims of asbestos exposure that eventually lead to mesothelioma. Of course, these major national law firms are just following a growing tread of class action hysteria and right now mesothelioma cancer caused by either direct or second hand exposure to asbestos is the cash cow for many large law firms.

As most regular readers know, my family has been effected by cancer for decades. While asbestos exposure is not the cause of cancer in my own family, I certainly do have strong feelings of support for other families that have either lost loved ones or are currently seeing them suffer from the awful effects of mesothelioma cancer. I personally believe the civil legal system in the United States was designed to help people that were harmed by asbestos exposure over the years. However, what has happened in our current litigious society is that major law firms are out fishing for victims instead of real victims seeking out attorney's on their own. For decades, the legal profession did not allow lawyers to advertise their services on television and in newspapers. However, that old rule has changed and the very reason that it was implemented in the first place was to prevent lawyers from advertising because when attorney's start looking for victims, the first thing that comes into the minds of most people is an ambulance chaser.

While regular lawsuits are mainly for the person that has been harmed, too many times class action lawsuits provide tremendous paydays for attorney's while at the same time not helping the people that were actually harmed at all. In recent years, there have been class action lawsuits against some companies where the wronged parties received small discount certificates for their loss while attorney's representing the class action petition were paid millions of dollars for their work. To me, that seems wrong and it further denigrates the image of all lawyers, most of which would never stoop to that level of contempt toward their client. I am not an expert on asbestos exposure and what the real risks are of contracting mesothelioma cancer. However, I have a gut feeling that many REAL victims of mesothelioma are not receiving as much compensation as they should get because millions of dollars of class action legal expenses are being put into the pockets of lawyers, many of which seem to be trying to create more victims than there actually are by advertising on television and in major newspapers.

All cancer is a major plague on modern day society and a cure must be found, someday, so that victims and families are not torn apart by this dreaded killer. I have never felt as depressed and less in control as I did when my own father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer six (6) years ago. As I watched this once proud man reduced to a skeleton before his body finally gave up and died my feelings of no control and depression grew with each passing day. In closing I would like to say that I am not anti-lawyer by any means. I personally know many good legal professional that practice law and use morality when making decisions in their own law firms. My anger in this post is directed at lawyers that seem to care more about their own financial success than they do about their faceless clients in these large class action cases and hopefully in future years the Congress will consider some type of reform to at least stem the growing tide of class action lawyers advertising for victims on television and in the newspaper.
