Study Shows Late Shift Has Increased Risk Of Cancer

In a recent study, people that work the night shift were shown to have increased risk of breast and prostate cancer. While some people believe this new study is somehow out of whack, to me it proves once again that Vitamin D could be the real answer to keeping cells from regenerating too fast inside of our bodies to the point they eventually turn into cancer tumors. There has been evidence in previous studies that a lack of Vitamin D, which is mainly converted in the body from sunlight, could be an underlying cause of some types of cancer. From my layman's point of view, there could be a link between people that work the late shift and a lack of Vitamin D flowing through the body. Some Vitamin D proponents have been urging, without success, the government to raise the daily amount of Vitamin D the public should receive to over twice the amount that is currently recommended.

For several decades the threat of skin cancer has caused most people in the medical community to encourage people to avoid the sun as much as possible. However, this short sighted approach may have done more harm than good. While skin cancer is easily treated in it's early stages, other types of cancer are not. As a person that has worked the late shift for years, I can personally attest to the fact that most night workers sleep during the day and what little sun they do receive is usually late in the afternoon when the UVB rays they need to naturally produce Vitamin D are at their weakest.

For almost one year now I have been supplementing my daily Vitamin D consumption to a total of 1000 IU's per day. Since few unsupplemented foods contain Vitamin D, most people will not receive enough of this vitamin without supplementation or 15 to 20 minutes of midday direct sunlight exposure, daily. Even the most notable food product that is supplemented with Vitamin D, milk, has also been under attack in recent years by some food extremist which encourage adults not to drink milk. While most people in the medical community continue to ignore the mounting evident that Vitamin D does something in the body to prevent out-of-control division of cancer cells, I believe that it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to daily consumption of Vitamin D.

While I am not convinced that increasing daily consumption to 100,000 IU's or more of Vitamin D is safe, there is little doubt that 1000 IU can be safely added to our daily regiment, especially if a person works at night and receives little to no daily midday direct sunlight. I am not a scientist or doctor, so the opinions expressed here are only my personal observation's which have been learned from dedicated reading of the Vitamin D/Cancer issue. There are countless studies that can be found by searching the Internet and I encourage everyone to do so at their earliest convenience.

Some Experts Claim Britney Spears Mentally Ill

After months of acting strange and losing custody of her two small children, some mental health experts are now proclaiming that Britney Spears could be mentally ill. This story is almost laughable considering non mental health care professionals judged Britney Spears mentally ill a long time ago. This new proclamation from some members of the mental health community proves just how twisted their view of what is and is not normal has become over the years. My gut feeling is that in additional to mental health issues, the abuse of drugs and alcohol are also leading to the self destruction issues in Britney Spears life.

The big three bad girls of Spears, Hilton and Lohan have been front page news in the tabloids for over a year now, with Lindsay Lohan being the only one of these three that was smart enough to get out of Hollywood and seek treatment in another state. I have been impressed by the discipline and dedication that Ms. Lohan has put into her rehabilitation while at the same time I have been disappointed at the lack of treatment being sought by Hilton and Spears. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton come from two completely different families and social backgrounds. While both of these young women have struggled with issues of morality, only Paris Hilton seems to have the family structure that might be able to settle her down before she hits rock bottom.

Britney Spears, on the other hand, is currently sitting at rock bottom and digging her hole even deeper by the day. Of course, Ms. Spears is suffering from mental health issues - but what can be done short of a civil commitment to save her life? Nothing that has happened via the court system has stop the self destructive behavior of Britney Spears and I doubt if an intervention by friends and family would do much good, either. The only way I see Britney Spears coming out of this mental health issue is for the court system to order her into treatment against her will. Courts do not civilly commit people that often anymore and such an action will not happen unless Britney Spears continues to put herself and others into danger.

CNN/YouTube Debate Stacked With Planted Questions

While Democrats were forced to answer silly questions from the likes of 'Snowman' a few weeks ago, CNN had a much different approach when conducting it's GOP debate last night. At least one and probably three of the people that sent in questions via YouTube for the Republican candidates turned out to be democratic plants. Of course, CNN is claiming that they didn't know anything about these planted questions, but considering the recent leftward slant to Ted Turners old 'Cable News Network' there are hard bitten realest, like myself, that don't believe CNN's hands are completely clean. Ever since Fox News started dominating the ratings in cable news, CNN has made a remarkable move to the left in it's news coverage. That move has caused the previously well balanced CNN to look more like a machine of the DNC than an independent television news channel.

While CNN and MSNBC have been upset with the success of the right leaning Fox News Channel, their answer to Fox News is to go even more liberal than they have been before. That said, there is a big difference in a news network being either right or left in their slant of the news and a respected name like CNN allowing themselves to be used by Hillary Clinton and others in the democratic party to try and make Republican candidates look bad in what is suppose to be a fair debate.

It is remarkable that all of the democratic candidates for President have refused to debate on Fox News because they consider it a Republican network. However, all of the GOP candidates for President have accepted invitations from all of the cable networks even though two of those networks, CNN and MSNBC cover politics with a liberal agenda. The powers that be at CNN should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that network to be a pawn of Hillary Clinton. Don't people like Anderson Cooper and Chris Matthews have any pride left in themselves as real journalist? Maybe the real reason that the Democrats did not want to debate on Fox News was because they wrongly assumed that Republicans would play just as dirty as they do.

CNN has a big black eye after last nights Republican debate, but the real losers are Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards who look like they will do anything fair or unfair to win the White House. There are enough dirty tricks in politics in both party's to go around, but so far in the 2008 election cycle, the Democrats are proving that they will try anything to win and every time they get caught, the American people lose just a little bit more faith in their qualifications to lead this great country.

Does Bill Really Want Wife Hillary Clinton To Win?

Rush Limbaugh is fond of saying that Bill and Hillary Clinton do not make mistakes when it comes to campaigns. In an off handed way, that is a complement to the quality of the campaigns that especially Bill Clinton has been involved with over the years. That said, in recent weeks Bill Clinton seems to be making some rookie mistakes while out on the campaign trail in support of his wife. These mistake have made long time Clinton watchers start to wonder if Bill Clinton really wants his wife to become the next President of the United States?

It would be impossible for former President Clinton to oppose his wife's candidacy in an overt way, so is he trying to sabotage her in a covert manner? I really don't know, but it is starting to look like the king of slick politics is working his magic to make sure his wife does not win the democratic nomination for President while at the same time not getting the blame for sinking her.

While I have never supported former President Clinton, I have marveled at the way he has taken the English language and changed huge mistakes made on his part and turned them to his advantage. This magical way he takes the spoken word and twists it around has been fascinating for me to watch for years. Now when this master of the spoken word starts making mistakes that hurt his wife, I can't help but wonder if he wants to be the only President of the United States in his family?

I believe there is something happening in the Clinton family that few of us really know about and at the root of it is the fact that Hillary Clinton has an excellent chance to become the next President of the United States. Could jealousy be driving former President Clinton to deep six the presidential hopes of his wife, Hillary? I don't know, but the next two months should be interesting to watch as the Iowa caucus' draw ever closer.

Mike Huckabee To The Rescue For Conservatives?

I could just image the smiles on the faces of true blue conservatives when a recent poll put Mike Huckabee at the top of the GOP in the first Republican caucus' in Iowa. In fact, I think Mike Huckabee will win Iowa by a wide margin which will cause much soul searching within the GOP. Make no mistake, there are still millions of true conservatives in the Republican Party and most of this year they have been trying to find a way to stomach most of the field of candidates because of those candidates lack of real conservative credentials. Mike Huckabee is a true conservative and he could cause problems for Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani if he wins the Iowa caucus by a wide margin.

What is happening now is what happens in all Republican and Democrat Primaries when election day draws closer. Millions of people that have not given a single thought to whom they might support start to think about the choices and whether there are any candidates in the race that fit their personal view of who should be President of the United States. The same way Mike Huckabee is making a surge in the polls on the GOP side, Barack Obama has started to narrow the gap with Hillary Clinton among democratic voters. With a front loaded GOP and Democrat primary season, some Americans will be forced to decide which candidate they support over the Christmas and New Years holiday. Now that's a change from previous presidential elections.

I would still consider Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama to be long shots today, but who knows what the future holds in a different kind of election season. While Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson come to the first primaries with a bunch of money, things can turn around on a dime if a bottom tier candidate like Mike Huckabee wins in the Iowa caucus. While most people have assumed for months that Hillary Clinton will be the democratic nominee for President, if Barack Obama upsets her badly in Iowa - the entire democratic campaign dynamic could change overnight. Right now the smart money is still on Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani, but other candidates like Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama are breathing down their backs and could make a move to overtake the front runners with a better than expected showing in the Iowa caucus'.

GOP Prepares For YouTube Debate Like Democrats

Before long, GOP candidates for President will face 'Snowman' and other strange characters on the CNN/YouTube debate. Several weeks ago, Democrats went first in this new type of debate where members of YouTube record video questions for presidential candidates and then send them in to CNN. If the issues that face this great nation were not so large, this type of debate might not only be interesting - but fun to watch. However, with a war being fought on two different fronts, the U.S. dollar dropping to all time lows and most Americans thinking that 2008 will bring a recession; now is not the right time for this kind of presidential debate.

From what I have seen of the GOP and Democrat debates so far has been mainly scripted answers to common questions asked by the news media all the time. The exception came a few weeks ago when Hillary Clinton was asked whether she favored a New York State plan to give drivers licenses' to illegal immigrants, which was a question she was not prepared to answer. After that question, the news media was put on notice that it was unfair to ask Hillary that kind of question and warned against doing it again, in a joking way, by the Clinton campaign. So far, most of these debates have not been watched by a majority of the voters and frankly I can understand that indifference.

Right now people are thinking about Christmas which bring smiles to children and a sense of family to adults. With the exception of harden political pundits, no one wants to think about who they will support for President at this time of year. The powers that be in the Democrat and Republican Party's that thought up this front loaded early campaign made a mistake because few Americans are thinking about politics during the Christmas holiday season. To make matter worse, both the Democrats and Republicans will have their presidential candidates decided by March, which means the rest of us will be forced to listen to campaign speeches for months longer than we have in previous presidential election years.

NFL/Cable Money Feud Disappoints Football Fans

For the regular fans of the NFL, this week marks a low point in how much NFL owners put money ahead of the well being of a game we all love. In my area, Dallas Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones is telling fans to blame 'Time Warner Cable' and 'Comcast' for Thursday night's Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers blackout. However, there is plenty of blame to go around and from my point of view it is the greed of the NFL that is causing millions of Packers/Cowboys fans to miss this weeks game and not the major cable companies. A few years ago, the NFL decided to start their own cable network and began offering exclusive end of the year games to that channel. For eleven months out of the year, the NFL Network mainly shows old football games. However, in late November and early December that lineup changes to live football games in prime-time that millions of viewers want to watch.

NFL owners want cable companies to pay a large fee for carrying the NFL Network twelve (12) months out of the year, when most viewers only care about that channel for a one month period of time. Of course, cable companies believe they are being 'strong armed' by the NFL and basically they are having money extorted from their customers for most of the year when very little new programming is offered on the 'NFL Network'. While Jerry Jones and other NFL owners go on television and do newspaper interviews blaming 'Time Warner' and Comcast' for millions of Americans not seeing the Packers/Cowboys game Thursday night, there is a lot more to this story if fans really take the time to see the whole picture. In my opinion the real villain in this story is the greed NFL owners have and how that greed is hurting a sport I have loved since I was a tot. I remember many years back when the NFL awarded it's first contract to Fox Television. In those days there were not as many Fox affiliates as there are today and many people were concerned that even back then they would miss watching their favorite team play because of that lack of affiliates.

Now, not only have many nationwide NFL games gone to cable television - but now the NFL is trying to not only own the teams that play this great game, but they also want to own the television networks that broadcast the games to the public. In a way, the NFL is trying to become it's own monopoly and the idea that all NFL games could soon be pay-per-view is something that should not be discounted by fans. In Arlington, Texas the city is building a state of the art complex where the Dallas Cowboys will play their home games in future years. Rumor has the cost of this new stadium complex at somewhere between 2 and 4 billion dollars. Does it really look like the NFL needs even more money from the fans? Left unchecked, raw greed can ruin any great sport and I am afraid that this weeks non broadcast of Thursday nights Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers game is just the first step in greed destroying the great game of professional football.

Prepare For Non Stop Reality TV As Writers Strike Continues

Before much longer, prime-time television will look like 'rerun city' as all the major broadcast networks run out of new material. The Hollywood writers strike is dragging out, just like predicted and it could last months. The first negative sign that this strike is hitting close to home will be felt over the next couple of weeks as the major broadcast networks start to run out of new episodes of your favorite show and start showing reruns of them around Christmas time. Then early next year, reality programming will begin filling the broadcast airwaves in what should be an interesting transition from normal prime-time viewing. Of course, all of us have grown use to prime-time reality shows like 'American Idol' and 'Dancing With The Stars', but usually these reality shows are cleverly intermixed with regular comedy and drama in a way as to not burn the audience out on one type of programming.

I can only image how bad prime-time television will become if nothing is broadcast nightly except reality based shows. It will be terrible and also some of the worst ideas will be put into production just to fill time slots with new programming. For every winning reality show there are dozens of duds that either didn't make the cut at the network level or were broadcast one or two times before being canceled. If the writers strike continues, many of these terrible reality shows will actually stay on-the-air because there will be nothing to take their place. I have heard several friends comment that they don't care if the writers ever go back to work because they blame them for the poor quality of television programming these days. My view of this issue is different. I believe there are good shows being written, but the powers that be in Hollywood and New York make the wrong choices when selecting what shows to add to their schedule. Almost all prime-time sitcoms are based around 'bathroom humor' which is better written by 'red neck Joe' on a mens room wall than by professional writers in Hollywood.

Sources are saying that the major Hollywood studios are out to break the writers union and if that is the case then the rest of this season is probably toast for people that enjoy evening programming on ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC. The good news is that much has changed in the entertainment world since I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's. Back then there was little nightly entertainment available if the major broadcast networks didn't have new shows. However, in modern America there are dozens of entertainment alternatives like mega movie theaters, DVD rentals and even movie downloads on our own personal computer. When I was young, I remember reading about the ratings of prime-time hits like 'Happy Days' where their weekly audience always exceed 50 million viewers. Today, only huge events like the 'Superbowl' can draw an audience that large to one broadcast network. What that means is that the major broadcast networks have lost their clout over the years and if this writers strike continues for an extended length of time, the Hollywood studios might just be committing suicide in their attempt to break the will of their own writers.

Mortgage Crisis Raises Recession Fears

When large banks like 'Citibank' start to lose billions of dollars because of the sub-prime mortgage market, then even regular people start to take notice. While 'Citibank' and other major banks are trying to put their best face forward in this mortgage meltdown, many well respected analyst are saying that the worst is still yet to come. Anyone with one lick of common sense could have seen this mortgage crisis coming from a mile away, but just like the fun days of the NASDAQ ten years ago - everyone was too busy making short term money to realized that at some point in time there would be a 'day of reckoning'. That day has come and many of the largest banks in the United States and around the world will suffer because of their lack of restrain in lending money to people that should have never qualified to buy a home.

Several months ago, while driving my car, I heard a radio announcement that went something like this: 'we don't care about charge offs or bankruptcy when judging you for a mortgage'. When I heard that radio ad, I knew that the mortgage market had become the latest bubble to hit the United States and I also knew that the pain would be felt far and wide once the full extent of that damage filtered through the U.S. economy. If large banks like 'Citibank' and huge brokerage firms like 'Merrill Lynch' are suffering this badly, can you image what is happening at smaller companies right now that has yet to be reported on the local news? A few decades ago I took a few real estate courses in college and at that time there was a time tested formula for judging the credit worthiness of potential home buyers. Somewhere along the way banks and other mortgage companies forgot these old rules and went for the quick buck and that is why the whole mortgage industry is in free fall right now.

This whole mortgage crisis would not have been possible if Alan Greenspan did not lower interest rates to levels that had not been seen in generations. Yes, the U.S. economy was suffering and rates needed to be adjusted downward. However, the amount of this drop cause everyone to quit saving money and pour their life savings into the real estate market for quick profits on money invested. Flush with investment cash, banks and other mortgage leaders tried to find mortgages for as many people as possible just to supply the incoming money stream. Some of these lenders did not care if the people getting the mortgage would eventually pay it off or not, because they were blinded by short term profits that were through the roof. I believe a bad recession is on the horizon and many Americans are going to be hurt by the greed of some that threw out common sense for a quick profit. Without government watching the financial markets these type of events will continue to happen and hurt all of us in the long run.

Texas Snow Makes El Paso Kids Smile

With still weeks remaining until Christmas, an early winter snowfall visited the El Paso, Texas area yesterday. In most parts of Texas, if we receive any snow in the winter, it usually comes in late January or early February. However, this year El Paso can brag that their ever growing border city received snow before anyone else in Texas. Last night on my local television news, I saw pictures of this El Paso snow as well as dozens of kids out playing in it. For me, snow is something I usually like to watch from a distance, since most people in Texas are terrible drivers when the roads are filled with snow and ice. Another problem faced by states like Texas is the lack of snow removal equipment owned by the State Department of Transportation. During really big snowfalls, state officials just shut down roads and let mother nature take care of the problem, usually the next day.

As I watched those young kids in El Paso playing in the snow yesterday, it brought back memories of myself playing in the snow as a young boy. I grew up in a small town in the Texas panhandle where winter snow was common, unlike my new home in Central Texas. For those that have never visited the Texas panhandle, the landscape is very flat with few trees. On a cold winter day, people would joke that as the wind blew out of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, there was nothing to slow them down once they got to the Texas panhandle. Usually the word Texas and the phrase 'cold weather' are not thought of in the same sentence. However, from time to time we get our share of cold and snow and that's what happened in El Paso yesterday.

I remember writing here last Christmas about my desire to see a 'White Christmas'. That didn't happen, but I can always hope that this year will bring that very uncommon event to Central Texas. Snow and Christmas have been connected for hundreds of years in Americans minds most likely because of the many classic Christmas movies that have associated snow with Christmas Day. Yesterdays El Paso snow will not last long and most likely it has already melted because of high temperatures. However, the kids in El Paso had a wonderful time playing in the snow yesterday and they also created a new memory that will last a lifetime in their mind. For those of you reading this post that live in the far northeast, my guess is that you think I am crazy to write about the positive effects of snowfall because most years you receive more of this white stuff than you can handle. However, down here in Texas where the summers can feel like 100 degrees in the shade, an occasion snowfall is a really big deal, indeed.

Barack Obama Turns Up The Heat On Clinton

Joining scores of Republicans that have been talking about Hillary Clinton's lack of experience, Barack Obama is starting to make the same argument. Hillary Clinton is more weak than some people think in the upcoming democratic primaries and if anyone has a chance to beat her there, it will be Barack Obama. For several months I have watched with amazement as Barack Obama has missed many opportunities to point out Hillary Clinton's lack of experience to serve as President. However, as the first democratic primaries near early next year, finally Barack Obama seems to be on message and the Clinton camp should be very concerned if he continues to talk about Hillary's lack of government or private sector experience.

Just because Hillary Clinton was considered by many to be a co-president when her husband served as President of the United States, that message will not hold water with many democratic voters as they search for a candidate to support in 2008. The only real important job that was given to Hillary Clinton when her husband, Bill, was President was to push through health care reform and everyone agrees she failed miserably at that one job. Before serving in the U.S. Senate, Hillary Clinton was an attorney, but she did not run a law firm. So in reality she has no experience running anything on her own, except her office in the U.S. Senate which I believe has a little over one dozen employees.

Barack Obama will not win the democratic nomination for President by playing nice with Hillary Clinton. Both Bill and Hillary are ruthless candidates and the only way to win against them is to fight fire with fire. Hillary's lack of experience is a winning issue for Barack Obama and hopefully he will stick with it for the rest of the campaign. When Barack Obama is on his game, he is the best and most emotional speaker in the world of politics today. However, on several occasions he has missed opportunities to 'hit a home run' against Hillary Clinton and those were rookie mistakes that should not be repeated. Rather than sounding like every other democratic candidate and pushing a socialist agenda, Barack Obama needs to talk long and often about Hillary Clinton's lack of qualifications to serve as President. If Obama remains on the offensive, he could knock Hillary out of her role of inevitability.

Trent Lott Leaves The Senate Next Year

Long time Senator from Mississippi, Trent Lott will resign the U.S. Senate early next year. For a long time, I thought Trent Lott was doing a good job in the United States Senate. However, in recent years he became too much of an insider and seems now to care more about 'making deals' than he did about doing the right thing and representing his conservative leaning State of Mississippi. To be frank, the Bush administration left Trent Lott swinging in the wind when he was accused of racism when he made comments about another U.S. senator at a retirement event. Rather that rushing to the aid of Lott, his own President let him down. While Trent Lott has made prgress in rebuilding his career, he apparently has grown tired of bitter partisanship in the U.S. Senate and will retire within the next two months.

Earlier this year, Senator Lott made a huge political mistake when he jokingly said that something needed to be done about Rush Limbaugh. Lott made those comments after Limbaugh and other conservative radio talk show hosts were successful in derailing GOP and democratic attempts to push through a new and flawed immigration reform law. That legislation, fortunately, failed to become law. However, the fingerprints of Trent Lott and other Republicans were all over it which came as a great disappointment to conservative Republicans, nationwide. I first got to know Trent Lott, via Sunday morning television, when he lead Republican efforts in the U.S. Senate. Back then he seemed like a reasonable man that looked for good compromise with Democrats that did not involve selling out principles to get the job done.

Today, it has been reported that the reason Trent Lott is resigning the U.S. Senate is because that body has become too partisan. While I agree that partisanship has become worse in Washington the past few years, I doubt if a tough fight is the real reason Trent Lott is retiring from the United States Senate. Early next year, new rules will go into place in Congress that will lengthen the time between when a U.S. Senator leaves the Senate before they can go to work for outside lobbying firms. Since Trent Lott is probably not leaving the Senate to go back to Mississippi and retire, my thinking is he will now take his years of public service and sell his influence to a private company that wishes to get preferential treatment in U.S. law.

In my opinion it should be illegal for any Member of Congress to hire themselves out to lobbyist after they leave office. This practice looks dirty, even if it is not and why should a person of influence, like Trent Lott, be allowed to try and influence his former colleagues for the purpose of helping out some large company create loopholes in law? I wish Trent Lott the best in his retirement and his career is just another example of why there needs to be term limits on all Members of Congress. All Members of Congress come to Washington with good ideas and a clean heart, but somewhere along the way most of them end up selling their soul to powerful special interest groups.

Retailers Prepare for 'Cyber Monday' Shopping

As an old dog that finds it hard to learn new tricks, I was unaware until today exactly what 'Cyber Monday' was all about. After visiting the 'New York Times' and other popular Internet web sites I learned that 'Cyber Monday' is an event that was created two years ago to boost online Christmas retail sales. Apparently, this idea started out as a one year gimmick to help encourage people to do more Christmas shopping online, but people around the world liked the idea and this year is expected to be the best 'Cyber Monday', yet. The whole 'Cyber Monday' idea is now being embraced by major retail stores that offer an online option for their purchases. Everyone from HSN, to Walmart and Target are offering special prices to people tomorrow for 'Cyber Monday' on their various web sites.

While I may be an old dog, I can see the benefit of doing at least some of my holiday shopping online, instead of visiting crowded stores and shopping malls. Another consideration is the time it takes to shop and the hours of operation of most retail stores. Some of us don't live a 9 to 5 lifestyle, so it would be convenient to do Christmas shopping sometimes in the middle of the night, online and dressed in our sleeping apparel. Tonight, the CBS News magazine '60 Minutes' gave millions of other people a good reason to shop online this Christmas holiday season. That reason revolves around how lack luster some retail stores treat security of customers credit card information when they shop. Tonight's '60 Minutes' show proved what I had known for a long time and that is it is safer to type your credit card number into a reputable web site than it is to have it swiped at a brick and mortar retail store.

'Cyber Monday' sounds like a neat idea for people like myself that live a busy lifestyle and are comfortable using Internet technology. Add to that convenience the fact that many retail stores will be offering big discount tomorrow to celebrate 'Cyber Monday' and the deal is closed for me. Every year more and more people do their Christmas shopping online at the same retail names they use to visit in person. I say, why not? If shoppers can avoid waiting till the last minute to do their shopping then online Christmas shopping makes sense and now with major retail stores warming up to this new way of shopping it might just grow ever larger, year over year.

I wrote a few days ago about how 'Britain's Got Talent' winner Paul Potts had gone from a humble mobile phone salesman in Wales to an international singing sensation in a matter of six (6) short months. Now on Monday Paul Potts will be opening the NYC main Bloomingdale's location and from all initial reports, his new album (CD) 'One Chance' is heading for huge success in the United States. So far, Paul Potts has already sold over one million copies of his new CD's around the world, but the powers that be have brought Paul to the U.S. on very limited occasions. First, Paul visited the United States only a few days after his victory on 'Britain's Got Talent' to appear on the NBC morning program, 'The Today Show'. Then all of a sudden no one in the U.S. heard much more about Paul Potts until a few weeks ago when he dazzled millions of people on the 'Oprah Show' in Chicago.

My thinking is that the people that are managing Paul Potts career right now want to create a sense of anticipation in American audiences when it comes to Paul Potts U.S. career. In the same way Col. Tom Parker managed the career of Elvis Presley, Paul Potts management may be trying to pull off the same type of anticipation desire for Paul Potts that was felt by Elvis Presley years before him. Col. Parker forced Elvis Presley into a world a seclusion so when Elvis did make a public appearance it was a big time event. The past few weeks I have been thinking that Paul Potts management team might be trying to promote Paul's amazing talent in the same way in the U.S. and they might have just found a way to get Paul noticed without radio airplay. Many things have changed since the days of Elvis Presley, so Paul Potts will be able to promote his talent in other counties while at the same time limiting his exposure to the worlds most important music market, the United States of America.

On Monday, millions of Paul Potts fans will see him live on network television as he opens the windows at the main New York City Bloomingdale's store. My guess is that after that store opening, we will once again see little of Paul Potts in the United States so the anticipation factor can continue to build his career in America. Paul Potts is a very special human being with a talent from God. I know this because every time I hear this young man sing on television or via the Internet on YouTube he has the ability to effort my spirit and mood. I have no doubt that Paul's number one promoter, Simon Cowell, knows what he is doing in Paul's career and the rest of the world might just wake up someday and say, 'where did this Paul Potts guy come from'?

L1011/747 Firefighting Jets Help Control Wildfires

Something new can be seen in the skies over California as firefighters work to control wildfires that have destroyed dozens of homes this weekend alone. Huge aircraft like the L1011 and the 747 are now helping firefighters put out hard to control blazes and these huge jets are an amazing sight to see as they drop their flame retardant on fires from hundreds of feet in the air. Anyone that has taken a 'long haul' jet trip in the past few decades has more than likely flown on a 747 or an L1011 jet. These huge jets carry over 300 passengers on a single flight and when traveling on such a large jet, the skies can remain smooth ever during turbulent conditions. In recent years, older 747 and L1011 aircraft have been taken out of passenger service and then modified to carry huge amounts of water and fire retardant. These additional tools have come in handy this year as a larger than normal number of wildfires have struck the Southern California area.

I still remember only a few short years ago watching in amazement as only propeller airplanes were used to drop water and fire retardant on California wildfires. About three or four years ago, I watched video of one of those old propeller airplanes that crashed after both of it's wings broke off, most likely due to maintenance and age issues. Now after much debate and miles of government red tape, 747, L1011 and even DC-10 aircraft are being used to help slow down wildfires so that the men on the ground have a fighting chance to put them out for good. When we consider how much life and property are put into harms way when a major wildfire goes through one of the most populated parts of the country, firefighters should always be looking for new tools to help them do their job in a more timely manner.

If you have not tuned in this weekend to news coverage on CNN, MSNBC or Fox News - you might want to take a quick peak, even though it's a holiday weekend, to watch these huge jets doing their magic on wildfires in the Malibu area. I am amazed at how old aircraft like the L1011 and 747 jets are just now being used to help fight wildfires because both jet aircraft have been in service for decades and have hundreds of thousands of safe flying hours under their belt. On a personal note, I would like to send out my personal condolences to the families in the Malibu area that lost their homes this weekend. I know no about of sympathy on my part will bring back their burned out property, but I along with millions of other Americans will have these families in our prayers tonight and we will be hoping that their rebuilding efforts will be a smooth and quick process.

Aruba Wiretaps Lead To Arrest Of Original Suspects

There is an old saying that a criminals worst enemy is their own mouth. That saying seems to have played a part in the recent arrest of Satish and Deepak Kalpoe for the murder of Natalee Holloway. While the current charges these young men are facing are not murder, I believe more severe charges will follow once Joran van der Sloot is placed into custody as early as tonight. Rumors surrounding these latest arrests in Aruba involve wiretaps of cell phone calls and text messages sent between these three young suspects. After reviewing some of these calls and text messages, Aruban police now believe that Natalee Holloway is dead and they also have a pretty good idea where her body was dumped.

Apparently, before or shortly after her death, Natalee's body was placed into a cage and dropped into a deep section of the ocean. Some reports claim that modern day sonar equipment will begin looking for that cage sometime next week and police in Aruba have said their new evidence is strong enough to convict these three men, even if they are unsuccessful at finding Natalee Holloway's remains. Early next week, Natalee Holloway's father will return to Aruba and shortly thereafter Natalee's mother, Beth Twitty, will also return to the last place Natalee Holloway was seen alive. In earlier stories, I speculated about my lack of faith in the Aruban authorities because of their lack of progress in this case over the past few years. However, that feeling on my part was before I learned of this potentially damning wiretap information and my opinion has changed greatly if these wiretap rumors turn out to be true.

If these young men are guilty of killing Natalee Holloway, I hope they spend the rest of their lives in jail. However, even when faced with undisputed evidence, I doubt if they will change their original story, so vital clues of what really happened to Natalee Holloway may never be found out by her family. However, there is nothing worse than not knowing if your child is dead or alive and even if the news turns out to be correct that Natalee is dead, at least knowing her fate will give some relief to her suffering family. Finally, some real answers might be coming from police in Aruba and while this case took longer to solve than it should have, at least some kind of resolution could be close at hand.

Malibu Homes Burn As Wildfires Continue

It is difficult to watch the news as dozens of families are witnessing all of their positions go up in flames as wildfires once again burn in Southern California. This has been a bad winter for people along the southern coast of California as one wildfire after another is pushed ever forward because of high winds and dry ground conditions. Today, while watching Fox News live coverage of the Malibu fires - my eyes began to tear as I saw home after home get completely destroyed as this latest wildfire moved forward. Living in Southern California has been the dream of many Americans for generations. The cool ocean breeze and a free living lifestyles have drawn millions of people to the Los Angeles and San Diego areas for decades. However, with paradise also comes other matters of nature like earthquakes and severe wildfires that can disrupt lives for years and completely wipe out property and positions in a heart beat.

Some of the homes that burned in today's Malibu fire looked huge from the sky as helicopters flew overhead. Most likely many famous celebrities lost their homes in today's Malibu wildfires because that area is a favorite place to live for many movie and television stars. To families that have lost everything in today's Malibu wildfire it does not matter whether their house was big or small, they still lost most of their worldly positions and my heart goes out to anyone that has to witness their own home go up in flames. Soon the various fire departments in the Southern California area will get this wildfire under control and the difficult and painful task of sifting through the ashes of burned out homes will begin. While I disagree with many of the political choices that are made by the citizens of Southern California, I certainly can relate to their strong will and ability to put things behind them, shake off the dust and get about the business of rebuilding their lives.

In that way, Californians are exactly the same as folks here in Texas. People from California and Texas seem to have that 'can do' spirit that lifts them out of tragedy and rather than destroying their purpose and strength they seem to bounce back to life with even more energy than before tragedy struck. I saw this Californian strength first hand a few months ago when wildfires ravaged the San Diego area and at one point there were more volunteers helping the evacuated than people in need of help. I have seen that same situation play out here in Texas many times before. I feel for those that lost property in Malibu today, but I have no doubt that the spirit of the residents that call Malibu home will bounce back and they will rebuild their community to even a better place in future years.

Government Run Health Care Would Be A Disaster

This weekend I watch a special on CNN entitled 'Broken Government'. The episode I watched followed the ongoing battles wounded American soldiers were fighting with the Veterans Administration (VA) to be fairly compensated for the injuries they suffered in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. As this show, 'Broken Government' progressed and these brave men and women were treated with indifference by the VA which was in charge of treating their injuries. My mind kept thinking that if Hillary Clinton is eventually successful at nationalizing the U.S. health care system, we all could be facing the same problems as veterans are facing right now with the VA. The U.S. veterans administration is government run health care and if the idea of this kind of system is really as good as Hillary Clinton says, then why isn't she standing at VA treatment facilities and touting their good work?

The truth is that the whole idea behind national health care in the United States is based more on political power than it is on improving treatment options for everyday people. Almost no one would want a government run health care system if it was promoted to be exactly like the VA. The way government bureaucrats are treating injured retuning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan is terrible. While I am not going to go into great detail about the 'Broken Government' show I watched today, it turned my stomach to listen as desk jockey's in the VA talked about how and why the Veterans Administration is run the way it is today. If people against nationalized health care want to win the fight against Hillary Clinton's brand of medicine, they need only point to the current VA hospital system as an example of what kind of treatment everyone would receive under Hillary Care.

As I have written before, U.S. veterans should be given a 100% payable health insurance card that they can use at the hospital and doctor of their choice. For medical problems, the VA should be fazed out and replaced with the same insurance coverage that Members of Congress and the President of the United States current have paid for by the taxpayers. It's ironic to me that Member of Congress that believe so highly in nationalized health care for the rest of us decide not to pass a law where they can also be treated at VA hospitals instead of having insurance where they can see the doctor of their choice. With the VA system a 100% government control medical system, why don't Members of Congress want the best for themselves and go to VA hospitals for their own treatment? Of course, the answer is that the VA hospital system is not the best medical treatment in the United States and unfortunately if Hillary Clinton gets her way, the rest of us will be fighting Washington bureaucrats in order to get life saving medical treatment, the same way returning wounded soldiers are having to do right now.

Gun Control Will Guide Fred Thompson Against Rudy Giuliani

The past few days, Fred Thompson has been hammering Rudy Giuliani on the issue of gun control. Since announcing his race for President, Rudy has been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. However, as the mayor of New York City he was a big proponent of gun control and Fred Thompson is trying to show gun owners that he and not Giulinai is the candidate for them. Fred Thompson's success on the gun control issue will revolve around exactly how many 'single issue' voters are still left in the Republican Party. Since September 11th, 2001 the Republican Party has changed a great deal and I believe there are fewer 'single issue' voters in the party than there was before that terrible day. The 2008 election will be the first time unknown candidates have tried to convince the party faithful that they have what it takes to lead the GOP and the country for the next four years.

There are most certainly still some 'single issue' voters both in the Democrat and Republican Party's, but their overall impact might be different this year because of the events of 911. In a way, Fred Thompson's strong support of the Second Amendment might be the best 'single issue' of the 2008 election campaign. The reason is that national security and personal security are very closely tied together with people that believe all Americans have a right to own firearms for personal protection. In a way, this gun control issue that Fred Thompson has locked onto is a stronger issue, in my view, than Rudy's abortion stand with a different group of 'single issue' voters. While there was a huge hope with some members of the GOP that Fred Thompson's campaign would catch fire and move him to the top of the Republican list, so far that has not happened. Will the issue of gun control propel the Thompson for President campaign ever higher in the polls. My thinking is yes.

Most political pundits believe that the War in Iraq will be the number one issue of the 2008 presidential campaign. I totally disagree with that way of thinking because conditions on the ground in Iraq are improving to the point that already some soldiers are returning back to the United States for good. With potential victory at hand in Iraq, Americans will focus on other issues and this will especially be true in the GOP in the first campaign where President George W. Bush has not lead the ticket for the past eight years. I believe Fred Thompson has found a good issue to drive a wedge between himself and Rudy Giuliani, but it is still too early to tell how this one issue will effect the entire 2008 campaign.

Fred Thompson's biggest problem has been and will continue to be his boring style on the campaign trail. If Thompson can't seem to put more excitement into his ideas for the country, all the good political positions in the world will not push his name to the top of the GOP list.

Fall Rain Disrupts Holiday Weekend Shopping

People here in Central Texas woke up this morning to cold weather and a slow falling rain as thousands of people continue their after Thanksgiving shopping. Yesterday, on 'Black Friday', millions of people got out of bed early to shop for those must have items for Christmas and the best deals were found before the Sun ever came up. The weather was nice yesterday, lots of cloud cover but no rainfall on 'Black Friday'. However, during the night, temperatures continued to drop here in Waco and early this morning the heavens opened up to a slow, but steady rain, which could make additional shopping today miserable and dangerous because some people will slip and fall while others will have traffic accidents.

Today will be a great day for men, like myself, that enjoy taking afternoon naps during cloudy days with a slow rain hitting the roof while we sleep. The bad weather has not detoured my wife from her shopping as she just left to pick up her mother and then head for our local shopping mall. The older I get the more I realize that there are people that love to shop and then there are the rest of us that make lists and shop quickly because we don't like shopping in the first place. I do worry about my wife driving in this rainy weather because during 'Black Friday' weekend there is more traffic on the streets and some people are so focused on getting to stores quickly that they forget to drive carefully as they make their shopping rounds.

It is almost time for me to get a small bite to eat and then head back to the bedroom for that Saturday afternoon nap. It is so dark this morning with the thick cloud cover and with the sound of raindrops on the roof it is causing my mind to drift and my eye lids to get heavy, already. I hope everyone has a safe Thanksgiving weekend and if you traveled to your holiday destination, please be careful as you head home tomorrow night. I have already talked to one friend that was involved in a traffic accident on Wednesday night in Temple, Texas. Thankfully, he was not hurt so he was able to travel on to his destination near Georgetown. He told me the I-35 traffic was heavy Wednesday night, so most certainly it will be the same way on Sunday as holiday travelers make their way back home.

Major News Networks Refuse To Cover Iraq Success Stories

The past three (3) months U.S. troops in Iraq have made major gains in controlling sectarian violence and have pretty much put al Qaeda out of business in this war torn land. However, rather than sing the praise of the U.S. military, the major television networks have grown ever so silence to the point they hardly cover news out of Iraq at all. I became visibly angry on Thanksgiving Day while watching CNN when they interrupted regular news to report a rocket attack on the 'green zone' that did no damage and caused no loss of life or injuries. This, so called, terrible rocket attack happened while at the same time CNN and other major U.S. television networks have refuse to give credit where credit is due in regards to the success of the U.S. troop surge lead by General Petraeus. With the exception of Fox News, talk radio and moderate to conservative bloggers, the American people would have no idea that our troops are gaining the upper hand in Iraq and winning this long fought war.

While ratings and newspaper circulation are dropping almost daily at mainstream liberal news media outlets like CNN, The New York Times, CBS, NBC and ABC News - new media lead by Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and conservative bloggers are enabling the American people to see what is really happening right now in Iraq and the silence of the liberal media establishment as potential victory is at hand in Iraq is shameful. The response to the success of news outlets like the Rush Limbaugh Show and Fox News by the old liberal media establishment has been to dig in their heal and peddle even more left wing propaganda or even worse remain silent as brave American troops are winning in the Iraq War. There are some interesting theories I have as to why major television networks and newspapers are ignoring good news out of Iraq and if I'm right they should not only be ashamed, but tuned out even more in the future by the American people as punishment for a job poorly done.

The reason that the New York Times, the Washington Post and all the major broadcast television networks are ignoring good news about the Iraq War is because they bought into the democratic line that the Iraq War was a 'civil war' that could not be won. Now if these same networks acknowledge that the Iraq War not only can be won, but also conditions on the ground are improving every single day - there will be a bunch of people looking foolish in news rooms around the country. While I don't buy into the theory that all network news anchors and reporters are 100% liberal, there is a problem with where they live and do their jobs. New York City is a great place to visit, but people that call it home can be some of the most uptight, elitist liberals that have every lived in this country. During off hours and at social occasions, members of the media are most certainly influenced by these liberal elitist that love to warm up to media figures in order to peddle their socialist garbage.

I have hoped for years that CBS, ABC and NBC would move their network operations out of New York City and instead host their news programs from either Dallas or Atlanta. Of course, this will never happen so the ever increasing liberal slant to network news in the United States will continue. I have even notice a more liberal slant to the coverage of CNN since network control was moved from Atlanta to New York City. If these major broadcast networks want to stop the ever increasing bleeding of their audience, they had better wise up and realize that liberalism and socialism might look like great ideas on paper, but most of the American people want no part of a 'one size fits all' United States of America.

The Height Of Arrogance/Evil - Toni Vernelli

While most people think it is cool to follow leaders in the environmental movement and to work hard to live a 'green life', there are people in this 'climate change' group you should be concerned about. One of those people is Toni Vernelli who terminated her pregnancy ten years ago because she believes that babies are evil because they will leave too big of a 'carbon footprint' behind on the Earth. To make sure she never was faced with getting pregnant again, Ms. Vernelli sought out and eventually found a doctor that would sterilize her at the young age of 27 years old. Actually, the only good event I can see in Ms. Vernelli's short life is the fact she can no longer get pregnant, so there is not a risk of her irresponsible behavior causing the death of another baby.

For months now, millions of Americans have been faced with an ever increasing message of how greenhouse gases are causing the Earth to warm while at the same time liberal politicians like Al Gore are rallying the public to stop 'global warming' by reducing our use of fossil fuels through controls and taxation. Until recently, the public face of what top proponents of the 'climate change' movement really looked like were kept under wraps. However, with this story of about Toni Vernelli being published in a major U.K. newspaper today - some people will begin to see just how far some of these environmental extremist will go in order to take the rest of us back to cave man days. Vernelli's views, while extreme, are similar to other radical environmentalist who really believe that mankind is bad for this Earth and some even don't think we have a right to live in the first place.

While all of the major U.S. television networks have signed on to this whole 'climate change' movement, it would be wise for them to separate themselves from the real crazies that would rather have an abortion than to bring a child into this world because that child will only pollute the environment, more. I guess in Ms. Vernelli's world, she is allowed to still live because she has learned how to reduce her own carbon footprint enough to walk the face of this Earth. The arrogance of some people in the 'climate change' movement should concern us all because if they get their way, these few nut cases will be allowed to judge all of us based on their own narrow mindset. Citizens around the world need to understand that all extremist groups are control by narrow minded people at the top that have as their number one goal, the control of other human beings.

Utah Speeder 'Tasered' For Not Signing Ticket

A man that was stopped for speeding in Utah may get the last laugh when his freedom of information request for a police officers 'dash cam' was turned over to him. In the video it is clear to see that the Utah State Trooper makes the decision to Taser this man because he refused to sign a speeding ticket. In a world where some people will not follow the rules no matter what, some police officers are either growing tired of the game playing by violators or in the worst case traffic stops, some police officers take their own frustrations out on people they stop for minor traffic violations. I watched this 'dash cam' on YouTube tonight and I have no doubt that this one Utah State Trooper over reacted and used more force than was necessary to issue a speeding ticket.

That said, I am a big backer of police officers as they travel the various roadways and neighborhoods of this great land protecting the rest of us from criminal elements. While 99.9% of police officers do the right thing, there will always be 'rouge' officers that mess up and create a black eye for everyone else. That is exactly what I think happened in this traffic stop in Utah that was 'caught on tape'. Some people desire to become police officers for the wrong reasons and a few are able to slip through the crack and actually earn the right to carry a badge. That is exactly my thinking about this one Utah State Trooper that took a non threatening situation and turned it into his personal crusade against a speeder.

The 'dash cams' that are put into the cars of most police officers and state troopers work to benefit the officer most of the time. However, they do also provide another benefit, not only to the public, but also for police departments that are trying to weed out 'rouge' cops from their department. When it comes to deciding who is right and who is wrong when a traffic stop is made, nothing has worked better than modern police car 'dash cams' at separating the lies from the truth. Good and honorable police officers should not fear 'dash cams' but welcome them in getting the truth out at trial and also in removing officers, from their department, that are not worthy of support on the 'Thin Blue Line'.

Packers/Cowboys 'NFL Network' Thursday Night Disaster

There are few people happy with the dispute between the NFL and major cable companies in regards to the new 'NFL Network' cable channel. Last year, several big games could not be seen by millions of viewers because the NFL and major cable companies like 'Time Warner' and 'Comcast' could not agree on where to put this network and how much money is paid to the NFL by each cable subscriber. This week, the 'moment of truth' is at hand as millions of Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers fans will be unable to see these two great teams play next Thursday night because of this ongoing dispute. Both the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers will be going into Thursday nights game with an unbelievable 10-1 win/loss record and every NFL fan wants to witness this game on live television. However, most of the United States will not see this football game and the greed of both the NFL and major cable companies are equally to blame.

The fight over money has grow each year that the NFL has increase in popularity, but when that fight for more money forgets the average fan that has made the NFL so popular, then something has to give and I think it will give early next week. Neither the NFL or 'Time Warner' or 'Comcast' cable desires to look like the 'bad guy' in this dispute. However, when next Thursday night rolls around and most NFL fans are unable to watch the Packers/Cowboys game then something will get done. However, my guess is that an agreement will be reached early next week that will put this important game on most of the cable systems in the United States before game time.

I live in Texas where just a few miles north of my home, the Dallas Cowboys are building a multi billion dollar football stadium which will more closely resemble the 'Taj Mahal' than a professional football arena. There is so much money being made in the NFL these days that for the NFL to cause most of its fans to miss the game of the season, over a financial contract, would be a huge mistake. The NFL is betting that fans will blame the cable companies, but in the end it will be the NFL that will really suffer the most loss of support from fans if the league does not bend. Last year when the 'NFL Network' first got started there was not a make or break game that was played after Thanksgiving. However, games don't get much bigger than the Dallas Cowboys' Green Bay Packers' match up next Thursday, so look for the NFL to find a way to, at least, compromise with 'Time Warner' and 'Comcast' so this game is not missed by 80% of NFL fans.

Will Retailers Smile This Holiday Season?

Tomorrow marks the first big shopping day of the 2007 Christmas holiday season, so retailers are waiting with nervous anticipation to see if Americans will once again open up their wallets and make this a Merry Christmas for thousands of U.S. businesses. Almost every year the nay sayers that keep track of the U.S. economy claim that the good times are over in our every growing U.S. economy and then they proclaim that tough times lay ahead for consumers. The bad news is that these negative voices of concern about the U.S. economy will eventually be right, but the big question is when will their predictions of gloom and doom in the U.S. finally come true?

Will the 2007 Christmas shopping season be a boom or a bust? My current thinking is that like in previous years, consumers will depend on their plastic money (credit cards) to bring home the bacon for U.S. retailers. There are some pressing issues this year that could effect some parts of retail sales and they revolve around the ever growing problem of recalled Chinese toys that contain lead contamination. Just because parents and grandparents might not be purchasing toys, that does not mean that they will not purchase other gifts and that spending will most likely keep our economy pumping along for another year. This would not be a good year to own ToysRUs stock, but those normal toy holiday shopping dollars might be used to improve other parts of the electronics sector this Christmas.

What concerns me more than anything else is the ever decreasing value of the U.S. dollar compared to the currencies of other nations. While most people only think about this disparity in U.S. dollar value when they travel to Europe on vacation, in reality almost everything we purchase in the U.S. is effected by the ever weakening value of the U.S. dollar. Keep your eye on the value of the U.S. dollar and if it continues to drop against other major currencies like the 'Euro', the time might be right to grow concerned about the strength of the U.S. consumer. Right now, I still think we are in line for another record breaking Christmas shopping year.

CBS Writers Strike Threatens Network Democrat Debate

All of the top tier candidates seeking the democratic nomination for President have said that they will not cross picket lines at CBS News if writers there go on strike. In the past few weeks, writers in Hollywood and Broadway have been on strike against movie studios in LA and theater owners in New York City. Now with writers at CBS News currently working without a new contract, rumor has it that writers there will go on strike soon, as well. On December 10th, a long planed presidential debate is scheduled on CBS which will not take place if CBS writers follow through with their planned strike.

To be honest, I have grown tired of presidential debates this campaign season for the simple reason that almost every candidate says the same thing during each debate and there are too many candidates on the stage for any real discussion of the issues to take place. The only real excitement during either a Republican or Democrat debate took place a few weeks ago when Hillary Clinton was 'all over the map' in her answer as to whether illegal immigrants should be granted state drivers licenses' in New York State. Other than that political misstep by Hillary Clinton, most of these debates have been little more than a chance for each candidates to express their campaign stop 'talking points' to a small national television audience.

There are rumors across the Internet that major companies are going to use this writers strike to try and break the writers union. If those rumors turn out to eventually be correct, then the writers strike in Hollywood, on Broadway and the soon to be announced one at CBS News could last for a long time. Tonight, I am watching new television shows on CBS television, so the current Hollywood strike has not exhausted that networks current stock of new shows, but it certainly won't be long before everyone will be watching re-runs on CBS and all the other networks as well. As far as the CBS News writers strike preventing yet another democratic debate that few people are really interested in watching, won't upset that many Americans because no real news is usually made at presidential debates anymore, anyway. Today's candidates are so well polished and trained on what to and not to say before the debate even gets started, these debates turn out to be more boring than watching paint dry.

Will The Natalee Holloway Disappearance Ever Be Solved?

With the re-arrest of the same three boys that have been questioned many times before in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba several years ago, some people are now asking if this disappearance of a young woman on her senior trip will be finally solved? In a nut shell, I say no it will not be solved and like many other cases of missing persons over the years, the blame resides with the police in Aruba because of their sloppy police work and their indifference toward the Holloway family in the first few days after Natalee's disappearance. One thing is for sure and that is tourism probably suffered in Aruba after the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. As members of the U.S. national news media covered Holloway's disappearance and the poor way police conduct business in this vacation paradise, most likely many people canceled vacations and travel plans to Aruba.

What is difficult for me to understand is that if these young boys killed Natalee Holloway, how in the world were they able to be so successful in hiding her body from eventual discovery? From the rumors and speculation about where Natalee's body might be buried, to some reports that she was eaten by sharks or sold into white slavery in some far away land - the media has been ripe with crazy speculation for years. Now that the police in Aruba have re-arrested their initial suspects in the case, maybe new evidence will be uncovered and lead to a resolution, but I wouldn't hold my breath when it comes to Aruba authorities.

While the disappearance of Natalee Holloway has been big news on and off over the past couple of years, most media outlets have moved on because of few new leads in her disappearance. However, one television reporter has kept a close relationship with Natalee's mother, Beth Twitty. Greta Van Susteren of Fox News has traveled back to Aruba many times over the years and has tried, almost single handedly, to keep Natalee's case in front of the police. Greta's Fox News Network Show, 'On The Record' is the best place to find out about breaking news in the Natalee Holloway disappearances because Greta has worked hard to keep this case alive in the U.S. news media and she has also developed a close friendship with Natalee Holloway's mother, Beth Twitty.

Cowboys Beat Jets - New England/Dallas Superbowl?

After eating a wonderful Thanksgiving meal at Golden Coral today, my wife and I settled in to watch the Dallas Cowboys play the New York Jets at Texas Stadium in Irving. While the game was pretty much a blow out from the beginning, my Thanksgiving tradition of watching the Dallas Cowboys play on turkey day goes back over 40 years. This year it has been so exciting to watch the Cowboys play under the direction of new head coach Wade Phillips. I was initially concerned about the choice of Phillips as the head coach, but with the Dallas Cowboys now sitting with a 10-1 win/loss record, the success of Wade Phillips as coach have silenced all the critics, including me.

Now sports commentators and 'Monday morning quarterbacks' like myself will turn our attention to what two (2) teams will earn a Superbowl birth this year. Of course, my number one choice will be the Dallas Cowboys to represent the NFC and at this time it would not be wise to bet against the New England Patriots to represent the AFC. Earlier this year the Cowboys were beaten badly by the Patriots so the early money would have to favor a Patriots victory if these two (2) teams are matched up in next years Superbowl. That said, I believe the Cowboys have improved each week since they were defeated by the Patriots, so a Superbowl match up between the Cowboys and Patriots should be a 'barn burner' of a Superbowl game.

Not since the days of Roger Staubach and then later Troy Aikman have the Dallas Cowboys had a young, high caliber quarterback leader. However, with the recent signing of Tony Romo to a multi-year $67 million contract the Cowboys once again have a young leader that seems to not only make all the right moves on the field, but also seems to live his personal life with personal character and integrity. It is easy to see a strong on the field leader in Tony Romo and even the sometimes hard to get along with, Terrell (T.O.) Owens seems to like and respect Romo as the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback.

Will the Dallas Cowboys play the New England Patriots in this years Superbowl? Well, only time will tell - but at this point that great match up looks more than likely.

Thanksgiving Is Over - Ready For Black Friday?

Now that our Thanksgiving meal has almost competed digested, millions of people are gearing up for Christmas by heading to retail locations like Walmart, Target or their favorite shopping mall to fight large crowds while at the same time looking for deep discounts. You can just call me a wimp because I have never gone shopping on 'Black Friday' and I have no desires to do so. 'Black Friday' is always the day after Thanksgiving when thousands of retail stores open before dawn in the hope of luring in late year Christmas dollars to improve their annual bottom line.

Tomorrow will be no exception as millions of people will be setting their alarm clocks to 3am or earlier in an annual effort to seek out and find the best presents for Christmas. While I have never been a fan of 'Black Friday', both my wife and mother love that day and each one of them rises before sun up to shop in crowed stores as they fight for parking spots as they free up in congested parking lots. I have always taken 'Black Monday' like a man - first I kiss my wife goodbye and wish her luck and then I sneak back to the bedroom for a few extra hours of sleep in a quite house. That extra sleep seems to come quite easily after I eat a few pieces of turkey and some pumpkin pie before that much appreciated after Thanksgiving nap.

In today's newspapers, there were hundreds of ads from local and national stores trying to entice the 'Black Friday' crowd to show up at their location first tomorrow. For the many that like crowed malls and grumpy shoppers, I guess Black Friday has a meaningful purpose in their lives. However, with 364 other days for Christmas shopping each year I will not be one of the many that will be pulling out the plastic cash tomorrow at Walmart or my favorite shopping mall. There is still plenty of time for Christmas shopping and I will wait for my usual day to buy this years gifts - which will be, most likely, the day before Christmas when I can shop with many other guy friends that also put their Christmas shopping off till the last minute. - Happy Holiday's

Huckabee Catches Romney In Iowa - Can He Win?

In a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, Mike Huckabee has pulled into the lead among GOP voters in Iowa. Most members of the national news media seem to be hyperventilating today because there might actually be a spoiler in the race for the Republican nomination. In almost every presidential election year, there is a candidate that comes out of nowhere to either beat the front runner in Iowa or New Hampshire and next year that candidate might be Mike Huckabee. The important thing to keep in mind is that most of the time these 'out of the blue' candidates end up not getting the presidential nomination after all the dust settles, so don't put a lot of stock in the Mike Huckabee campaign unless he is able to use the potential win in Iowa and propel his political good fortune to a win in some of the larger states, later.

With no clear, conservative, leader in the GOP race for the 2008 presidential nomination there will be these stories written about long shots like Mike Huckabee in the mainstream press every time a poll is conducted that goes against conventional wisdom. I believe some members of the media get bored covering presidential campaigns, day in and day out, and when something like a potential dark horse win by Mike Huckabee gets legs, it is just what the doctor ordered to add a little bit of excitement back into their lives. I'm not trying to take away any of the good news this poll result provides to the Huckabee campaign, but a single poll, in one small state does not proclaim a major party victory across the entire country.

In Iowa, conventional wisdom has had Mitt Romney winning that state for months. Romney has poured millions of dollars of campaign cash into Iowa with the hope it will propel his chances of winning elsewhere. However, Mitt Romney is still being dogged by two issues that just won't go away. First, when he was Governor of Massachusetts, he ran as a liberal Republican and many conservatives do not trust Romney to lead the GOP as their candidate for President. Second, Mitt Romney is a Mormon and while that should not matter in the race for President, it most definitely matters to some protestant social conservatives that have a mistrust of any religion except their own. I can see Mike Huckabee winning the Iowa caucus, but as of yet I cannot see him taking that victory and turning it into a long shot win of the GOP nomination. Right now, Rudy Giuliani is my favorite to win the GOP nomination. However, as we all know, anything is possible in the crazy world of U.S. politics.
