There is word coming out late today that GOP candidate for President, Mitt Romney, is suspending his campaign. Put more simple, Mitt Romney is out of the 2008 GOP nomination fight which leaves no one left that far right conservatives want to support in this years presidential election. I believe that President Bush's brash and in your face style of leadership has hurt the conservative movement in the United States. While the party faithful have stuck with President Bush through think and thin, almost everyone else has abandoned the Bush administration and they are demanding change in Election 2008.
There is a very fine line between a person with absolute personal confidence and someone that is perceived as arrogant. Unfortunately for conservatives in the Republican Party, most Americans view President Bush as the later. Ever since September 11th, 2001, President Bush has lead the US with a brash arrogance that I did not see before the terrible events of that day. While most people on the far right view President Bush as a resolute man that is standing up for what is right and never backing down, almost everyone else in the country believes that President Bush is arrogant and extremely stubborn. More so than anyone else in this years election cycle, President Bush is driving the voters attitude for change because most voters do not think he has taken the country in the right direction.
Now that Mitt Romney is getting out of the race, extreme right wing members of the Republican Party have no one else to fall back on. Social conservatives now will be faced with the choice of whether to venture out in November and cast a vote for a person they do not like, John McCain, or do they sit home on election day? I believe that most social conservatives will vote for John McCain on election day if the democratic nominee for President is Hillary Clinton. However, the GOP prospects for social conservatives voting for McCain if Obama is the nominee is less certain.
While historians have a way of making a President appear more intelligent over time, right now President Bush is not looking that bright. What Ronald Reagan built, in the late 1970's, has been torn apart in eight short years by President Bush and it will take time for conservatism to be rebuilt to a point where it can win national elections again in the United States. Until that time, conservatives will be forced to watch the United States go in a more liberal direction which is something that will be hard for them to watch.
