Super Tuesday, 20 State Primaries Vote Next Week

On Tuesday, voters in 20 states will travel to local polling locations to cast their vote either in the Democrat or Republican primaries for President of the United States. Late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning the picture of which candidate is in the drivers seat in this years presidential election will become more clear. Unless there is a major mess up by John McCain, he should do very well on Super Tuesday. The outcome for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is less sure as both candidates are likely to win some states and if that happens, there will not be a front runner in the democratic party coming out of Super Tuesday. To me, the biggest political story of 2008 is the come from behind campaign of Senator John McCain from Arizona. The GOP is filled with social conservative voters that do not like John McCain because of his more moderate and some would say liberal stands on the issues.

That said, John McCain is leading in most polls and he has proven that he can win in Republican primaries both in small states like New Hampshire and in large ones like Florida. Even with GOP heavy weight pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter putting down John McCain almost daily, his campaign is continuing to grow within the GOP. On the democratic side of campaign 2008, I am impressed that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have decided to end their war of words against each other. Super Tuesday will be the best opportunity, so far this year, to see if Barack Obama is the 'real deal' when it comes to getting enough votes to win the democratic nomination for President. Almost no one predicted, early on, that Barack Obama would be in a neck and neck battle with Hillary Clinton for the democratic nomination going into Super Tuesday - but that is exactly what has happened.

In a campaign season that started out with pundits saying it would be a Rudy Giuliani/Hillary Clinton campaign in the general election, it might just turn out that neither one of those candidates ends up with their party's nomination. Rudy Giuliani is already out of the race and if Barack Obama finds a way to win dramatically on Super Tuesday, Hillary Clinton might find herself in the same place Giuliani was after his embarrassing loss in Florida. Wouldn't it be something if the 2008 general election for President of the United States was a contest between Barack Obama and John McCain? While that contest is still not a certainty, it is more likely today than it was a week or ten days ago.
