Walters/Oscars Tonight, Will Barbara Win The Night?

In what is expected to be a gloomy night in the Los Angeles area, the 2008 version of the Academy Awards will take place in the Kodak Theater tonight. As I am writing this story there are major concerns that tonight's Oscars ceremony could be the lowest rated Academy Awards event in years. What is at the root of the problem with the Academy Awards is the fact that the powers that be in Hollywood continue to snub mainstream America by nominating motion pictures that hardly anyone beside New York and Hollywood elites consider to be good movies.

Of the movies that have been nominated for best picture, I have only seen one of them, 'Juno'. However, while 'Juno' is nominated for best picture at the 2008 Academy Awards it is not expected to win because it made too much money at the box office. Only in Hollywood would a movie that millions of people wanted to see be punished come Oscars time. That said, I have seen good movies constantly snubbed when the Academy Awards are handed out because mainstream American enjoyed watching those movies. The last time I remember a movie that was really deserving of a best picture Academy Award, that actually won - was over 10 years ago when 'Forrest Gump' won the Oscar.

Tonight as the 2008 version of the Academy Awards airs, I am thinking that the 'Barbara Walters Special' before the Academy Awards in the Eastern and Central Time Zones and after the ceremony on the West Coast might just draw more viewers than the actual awards show. It has been many years since I have seen a more poor group of best picture nominated movies than has happened in 2008. As mainstream American continues to reward good movies like 'Juno' and the recently released sequel to 'American Treasure', the snobs that make up Hollywood continue to think that regular American move goers are some how delusional in the way the spent their movie dollars.

More than likely I will tune in from time to time tonight to see how the 2008 Academy Awards are playing out, but if recent years are any example, I will be fast asleep before the show is over. I love to watch good movies and I have grown increasingly tired as members of the Motion Picture Academy continue to nominate and vote for movies that are really not that good. However, I am glad that the writers strike is over and hopefully some of the better movie writers are already in the process of finishing up new movies that the American people really want to see.
