I have written several times now about my view that the never ending campaign between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will, in the end, benefit the weak GOP candidate John McCain. Today, there is new proof that McCain is benefiting 'big time' from the constant disagreement and dirty politics that Clinton and Obama are using against each other. In a new poll released today, John McCain leads both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama by ten points and if the election were held today he would win in a huge landslide election.
While Democrats are focused on the latest tidbit of dirt that either Obama or Clinton has thrown at each other, moderate Republicans and Independents are turning away from both democratic candidates and taking a fresh look at John McCain. Rather than blaming either of the democratic candidates for President for this ongoing problem, instead it is the nature of how democratic primaries are conducted that is causing the problem. Unlike Republicans who have winner take all campaigns in the various states, Democrats have a system where even losers are given convention delegates to the party's convention.
While the democratic system is set up to make voting as fair as possible, in the end it has the effect of dragging out an election much longer than it should go. That is what has happened in 2008 and if a winner is not declared before long in the democratic party, John McCain will continue to expand his lead against both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. It does not help matters that a head strong DNC chairman by the name of Howard Dean is treating two of the most important states in this election like children by refusing to seat their delegates at this summers convention.
For most of my life I have watched the democratic party squander big initial leads by getting into in-fighting within the party as a whole. Once again in 2008 they are committing self destruction again which is allowing a less than popular GOP candidate to take the lead. For the life of me I do not understand this fixation with self destruction on the part of die-hard Democrats. In reality, most Americans agree with the democratic party on the issues in much greater numbers than the Republicans. However, Republicans tend to pull together at the end of campaigns while Democrats continue their in-fighting.
