The day after Hillary Clinton won big in West Virginia, John Edwards showed up in Michigan to offer up his endorsement to Senator Barack Obama for President. At the top level of the democratic party, almost all leaders are trying to find someway to get Hillary Clinton to understand that she has lost this election and withdraw. However, rather than withdrawing from the race, Hillary Clinton continues to fight on even though she has little to no chance to win. Hillary Clinton went from a spoiler candidate, to something much worse, several weeks ago when the math of how delegates and Superdelegates were voting went against against her in a terminal way. However, Hillary Clinton is still fighting for the democratic nomination while her campaign is on full life support and long after the doctor has proclaimed her 2008 presidential effort, brain dead.
I wrote a few days ago about my current belief that Hillary Clinton is staying in the 2008 democratic race even after it is clear that she can't win solely to hurt Barack Obama's chances of victory against John McCain in November. I believe politics to Hillary Clinton is all about winning as an individual and party loyalty is just something that is talked about when there are TV cameras around to record her words. If Hillary does not win in 2008, then her next best chance to become the first female President of the United States will happen in 2012, if John McCain becomes the next President. However, if Senator Obama were to win this year - then it would be very hard, if not impossible for her to win the democratic nomination in 2012 against a sitting democratic President of the United States.
The Clinton's have always done a good job of pulling the wool over the eyes of some Americans with their slick campaigns and speeches consisting of double talk. However, in 2008 - many people in the media and on blogs like this one are speculating as to what Hillary Clinton's next move might be in order to become the President of the United States. When Hillary's husband, Bill Clinton was President - he was known as 'slick willie' long before he sought the democratic nomination and become President. During his days as Governor of Arkansas and then later as President of the United States, Bill Clinton always played fast and loose with the truth and over time even Democrats started to see that all Bill Clinton really care about was himself. Now in many ways, Hillary Clinton is turning out to be just a reinvention of Bill Clinton in a pants suit.
Right now I would not be surprised if Hillary Clinton stayed in the democratic nomination race until the convention starts in August. Everyone that can count and knows that she has lost this election will not matter to her future political calculations because in my opinion her brain has already moved past the 2008 democratic race for President and she is instead starting a new campaign for President that will be waged against John McCain in 2012. In order for Hillary's 2012 strategy to work, she must do all she can to make sure that Barack Obama does not win the general election in November. If she is successful at preventing Obama from becoming the next President of the United States - all of her money and efforts will go into defeating the then President McCain when he runs for reelection in 2012.
