Sunday, my wife and I went to see Al Pacino's latest movie called '88 Minutes'. Before we went, I had reservations about this movie because most movie critics tore it apart in their reviews. However, at the end of the movie as my wife and I were walking back to our car - I looked at her and said, that movie wasn't half bad. '88 Minutes' is just another example of what millions of Americans have learned and that is not to base their movie choices on professional reviewers that seem to be talking more to themselves than to the general public. '88 Minutes' had a huge cast of characters which included Amy Brenneman who I previously watched on the hit television show 'Judging Amy' and Leelee Sobieski who I first saw preform in 'Deep Impact' and later in the movie thriller, 'Glass House. '88 Minutes' is the story of a troubled, yet arrogant, forensic psychiatrist whose reputation for knowing the human mind is so strong that his testimony alone could be enough to send murderers to jail or even to the death chamber.
There is nothing more I could write about the amazing acting ability of Al Pacino that has not already been written about hundreds of times. Pacino always seems to play his part in movies so well that it is difficult to image anyone else playing that part when the film is over. '88 Minutes' is no exception to that rule as Al Pacino, in his forensic psychiatrist part, rushes around Seattle, Washington in an attempt to find out who is trying to frame him for murders that he did not commit. In addition to the outstanding cast that made the movie '88 Minutes' so enjoyable to watch - the writer, Gary Scott Thompson, wrote a movie script that was well thought out and it kept me guessing right up until the end of the movie as to which character or a combination of characters were trying to frame Al Pacino's character for murder.
So many thriller movies today are not thrillers at all, instead many movie directors and writers seem to take unlimited short cuts when writing and making movies these days. After watching '88 Minutes' yesterday - I felt a clear breath of fresh air hit me in the face when that movie was over because rather than Jon Avnet, the director of '88 Minutes', taking short cuts in order to either save money or because of laziness - he instead made one of the best movie thrillers I have seen in years. From my point of view, too many Hollywood directors try to make up for script shortcomings by turning what should have been great thriller movies into nothing more the crazy slasher flicks that do little to make the people that see those movies think and really get into the storyline.
If you're looking for a good thriller movie, in my opinion '88 Minutes' will be well worth watching either at a local theater or on DVD where it will be released soon. When my wife and I saw '88 Minutes' yesterday, it had already moved to our local dollar theater and usually by the time a movie starts showing there it will not be long before it is released on DVD. The passage of time has done nothing but improve the acting ability of Al Pacino and in the movie '88 Minutes', Pacino is his usual fantastic self on the movie screen. If watching great movie thriller movies is something you enjoy doing, then '88 Minutes' is a must see movie for your list.
