It is nothing new to read news in our local paper or on the Internet which talks about the latest exploits of some famous actor or singer around the world, but it does seem like there is more self destructive behavior in the entertainment world today than there has been in the past. Last year, the world was all a buzz with the daily downward spiral of pop singer and mother of two Britney Spears and in 2008 hardly a day goes by without another piece of bad news being reported about the life of Amy Winehouse. In a sad sort of way members of the paparazzi seem to be fueling some of the out of control self destructive behavior of people like Britney Spears and Amy Winehouse. While there have always been young stars that have found themselves becoming addicted first to fame and fortune and then eventually to substances like alcohol, in today's Hollywood culture the problem does seem to be worse than before. Tabloid television revolves around the same reporting strategy as mainstream media coverage which has always found itself covering death and the self destructive behavior of others. From my earliest recollection of television news coverage I can remember the old saying that 'if it bleeds, it leads' and that saying was coined long before anyone had heard the term 'tabloid journalist'.
In the world of tabloid journalism, unlike the mainstream media, it is not as important that someone be bleeding in order for one of their stories to be interesting to a star obsessed public – but instead the pictures that bring paparazzi the most money are pictures of stars doing some crazy and totally outrageous. At the end of the day, no one – including Britney Spears can hold a candle to Amy Winehouse when it comes to outrageous and crazy behavior. To anyone that bothers to look closely at Amy Winehouse, they can tell right away that she is more than just a troubled young woman. Instead, Winehouse is suffering with some kind of drug dependency and most likely she has also suffered major sexual abuse during her young lifetime. It's not just self destructive behavior that is evident in Amy Winehouse's life, but there is also a huge anger issue that is clear and present for anyone to see. It is not uncommon for Winehouse to physically assault a total stranger on the streets at least a couple of times per week. No rational and right thinking person of any age conducts themselves in that manner without seeing the inside of a jail cell for a prolonged period of time. Maybe Amy Winehouse does see herself as a victim, but that attitude does not allow her to fly into a rage and hit innocent people on the streets in some kind of anger acting out rage.
Over the past year, some of the outrageous tabloid stories about the exploits of Britney Spears have faded from view most likely because she does want to be able to see her children more. While Amy Winehouse does not have young children to help her grow up and be a responsible woman, hopefully some other person or potentially fatal event might wake her up before it's too late to save her life. There is something both sad and disgusting in the way way paparazzi follow around people that are clearly suffering from mental problems in order to make money off of the suffering of others. Maybe that is why so many Americans now despise the work of the paparazzi, because they really seem like nothing more than bottom feeders that earn their living by photographing people that need professional help – but who are many times to mentally ill to recognize that they have a problem. Like with Britney Spears before her, I hope that Amy Winehouse is able to get the mental help that she needs before her downward spiral eventually leads to her death. There is excellent help available to treat both drug abuse and mental issues – but the person that is suffering must first admit they have a problem before any of today's helpful treatments can be successful.
