Britney Spears Committed By Concerned Parents

One of the hardest things a parent will ever do is to go to court and have their child mentally committed against their will to a mental health facility. Last week, Britney Spears parents made that tough decision to go to court and have her committed. Britney Spears' father sat in court last week with red eyes as the proceedings moved forward against his daughter. When the court hearing was over, Spears' father was appointed conservator over her public and private affairs until she is judged not to be a threat to herself or others by mental health professionals. For over a year, I have been encouraging family members of Britney Spears to step in to save their daughters life. That said, it is not that easy to commit a person against their will in modern day America.

While some people believe that Britney Spears suffers from a bipolar disorder, other professionals believe that her problems are more akin to postpartum psychosis. Whatever the problem might be inside of Britney Spears' head, with this court commitment there is a good chance that mental health professional will have enough time to correctly diagnose what mental problem she suffers from and also give them enough time to let the medicine work in order to heal her young mind. I remember around a year ago being shocked at the young and untimely death of Anna Nicole Smith and in the back of my mind I have been seeing the same scenario playing out for Britney Spears if someone did not take action to save her life.

As I watched Britney Spears parents leaving a Los Angeles courthouse after having their daughter committed, I felt terrible for them. I could only image what would be going through my mind if I was forced with the same choice. As a parent, we always want to do what is in the best interest of our child. However, at the same time we don't want to seem evil to our children either. There is little doubt that Britney Spears was and is suffering from some kind of mental health issue that is causing her to self destruct. Today, there were late reports that Britney Spears parents want to take her back to her childhood home in Louisiana for treatment and I also believe that is the best opinion for her. No matter what is at the root of Britney Spears mental problems, a Hollywood lifestyle tends to be more of a distraction to her cure than something that is helpful. I hope that this mental health commitment obtained by Britney Spears parents against her eventually leads to a recovery in her life. Also, I hope that she does not take her parents actions as a personal betrayal and hold it against them in the years to come.

Illinois Mall Murders, Robbery Gone Bad?

Today came the bad news that five people had been killed at a Lane Bryant store in a suburban Chicago strip mall this morning. From late reports, the five victims of this crime were all found dead in a back room of the store. Tonight, police are proceeding on the assumption that today's mass murder in Illinois was most likely the result of a robbery gone bad. Right now there is no word as to whether these murder victims were all employees of Lane Bryant or if they were a mix of employees and customers. Like everyone else, I certainly hope that police in Illinois will find out who committed these terrible murders and brings the person or persons responsible to justice.

It wasn't that long ago when a young man by the name of Robert Hawkins went into a Omaha, Nebraska mall and started shooting total strangers at random because in his own words he wanted to 'go out in style'. Mass killings in public places have seemed to be on the increase in recent years as people that either hold a grudge against a business or whom simply crack up mentally decide to make someone else pay for their misery. I have been concerned for a long time now about these crazy crimes where ordinary people are gunned down for no reason at all. After Robert Hawkins committed his crime in Nebraska, only a few short days later another crazy person went into a church in Colorado and started killing people that were attending church. Then today, there was another senseless murder of five more people in Illinois by a someone that was either trying to rob the store or for some other more sinister reason.

Most people go to work in the morning with thoughts of what they will be doing when their workday is finished. The last thing on most peoples mind is a possibility that they will not be returning home that night because some crazy person decided to take their life for no reason. Of course, no one should take these latest crimes and use them to hunker down in their own home and become a reclusive person. However, the rising amount of violent crime in the United States does cause most of us to think twice before we break eye contact with strangers while working or casually while shopping at a mall. The world has become a very dangerous place in recent years and with all the senseless violence in both large and small communities nationwide, a person must stay alert every time they leave their home to venture out in the world.

Iraq War Success, Media Avoids Coverage

I have noticed that the major news media in the United States has been ignoring US troops since they stopped dying in large numbers and started winning the War in Iraq. For Americans that have friends or family members that are serving in the armed forces, this snub by members of our own news media against members of the US armed services is causing great anger. I talked to a friend last night who has a daughter that serves in the US Air Force. In a few weeks, her daughter will be deploying to Iraq and no one could have been more proud of a daughter than this mother was. It is hard for me to talk or write about the pride that I have in the brave men and women that serve this country proudly in Iraq and elsewhere, without getting emotional, and that same pride extends to their families back here at home.

Members of the mainstream media should be ashamed of themselves as they continue to snub the successes of troops in Iraq. In recent days, the only story I heard reported in the mainstream media about Iraq was when a 'roadside bomb' killed several Americans. This one sided reporting of war news is wrong and Americans from all walks of life should be writing to and calling major news organizations like NBC, ABC and CBS and demanding that they give just as much broadcast time to the good news in Iraq as they gave to the bad news when brave soldiers were losing their lives. I believe long ago, liberal news organizations hooked up with Democrats in believing that the War in Iraq was lost and the best that America could do was to pull our troops out of that country and bring them home at once. Now that good news is coming out of Iraq, these complicit members of the mainstream news media will look foolish if they now start talking about Iraqi success stories when they themselves believed this war was not winnable a few years ago.

The biggest mistake that President Bush made when he committed troops to Iraq was that he did not commit enough manpower to do the job right. Whether he was following the advice of then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld or VP Dick Cheney, history has proven that not enough troops were sent to Iraq in the beginning and once troop strength was taken higher, positive things started to happen there. Now the United States is on the verge of a great military victory in Iraq, but hardly anyone in the major news media wants to be around to cover that accomplishment. It's sad but true that the major news media in the US is bias today and nothing proves that fact more than when they ignore good news coming out of Iraq.

Super Tuesday, 20 State Primaries Vote Next Week

On Tuesday, voters in 20 states will travel to local polling locations to cast their vote either in the Democrat or Republican primaries for President of the United States. Late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning the picture of which candidate is in the drivers seat in this years presidential election will become more clear. Unless there is a major mess up by John McCain, he should do very well on Super Tuesday. The outcome for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is less sure as both candidates are likely to win some states and if that happens, there will not be a front runner in the democratic party coming out of Super Tuesday. To me, the biggest political story of 2008 is the come from behind campaign of Senator John McCain from Arizona. The GOP is filled with social conservative voters that do not like John McCain because of his more moderate and some would say liberal stands on the issues.

That said, John McCain is leading in most polls and he has proven that he can win in Republican primaries both in small states like New Hampshire and in large ones like Florida. Even with GOP heavy weight pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter putting down John McCain almost daily, his campaign is continuing to grow within the GOP. On the democratic side of campaign 2008, I am impressed that both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have decided to end their war of words against each other. Super Tuesday will be the best opportunity, so far this year, to see if Barack Obama is the 'real deal' when it comes to getting enough votes to win the democratic nomination for President. Almost no one predicted, early on, that Barack Obama would be in a neck and neck battle with Hillary Clinton for the democratic nomination going into Super Tuesday - but that is exactly what has happened.

In a campaign season that started out with pundits saying it would be a Rudy Giuliani/Hillary Clinton campaign in the general election, it might just turn out that neither one of those candidates ends up with their party's nomination. Rudy Giuliani is already out of the race and if Barack Obama finds a way to win dramatically on Super Tuesday, Hillary Clinton might find herself in the same place Giuliani was after his embarrassing loss in Florida. Wouldn't it be something if the 2008 general election for President of the United States was a contest between Barack Obama and John McCain? While that contest is still not a certainty, it is more likely today than it was a week or ten days ago.

Superbowl Sunday, Largest Tailgate Party Ever

Before most NFL football games there is an event in the parking lot of stadiums around the country called a tailgate party. On Superbowl Sunday, all of those tailgate parties are bundled together as millions of people gather, nationwide, to watch the Superbowl game on television. That is why I believe that the Superbowl, in the United States, has turned into the biggest tailgate party of the year. While most people do not watch the Superbowl game on a small TV in a crowed stadium parking lot, like a real tailgate party, millions of people do gather at restaurants, bars and private homes to watch the main event of the year.

In many ways, the Superbowl game has turned into the biggest social gathering of the year in all cities both large and small. Even people that could care less about football or the NFL decide to attend Superbowl parties and enjoy the game with friends and family. In my family, the only time we see some distant relatives is when we all get together once per year to watch the big Superbowl game. The thing I like the best about attending Superbowl parties is the food and the cold beer. My wife enjoys talking to people about all kinds of stuff that does not involve football, since she is not an NFL fan at all. That said, she does stop talking long enough to watch the TV commercials that are played during the game and I must admit that I think those multi million dollar Superbowl commercials are pretty good myself.

Tomorrow, fans from NYC and Boston will be glued to their TV sets all day because they have a vested interest in the game. However, for most Americans the Superbowl is more than just a football game between two teams, but instead a huge tailgate party, without the tailgate, where a good time is had by all. No other American sport has the power to bring so many people together at one time for a party. Each year, the annual Superbowl game does more to bring Americans together in a positive way than any other event of the year. While most people will be watching the Superbowl tomorrow for reasons other than to see which team will win. I will be interested to see if the Giants are able to bring the Patriots unbeaten winning streak to an end. The New England Patriots have proven that their football team should go down in history as one of the best in history. However, don't write the history books just yet, because at the end of the day tomorrow – that late blooming team from New York City might change that history and find a way to win against the Patriots which no other NFL team has been able to accomplish this year.
