Even the most powerful among us must step down when they disobey the laws of the land. This is especially true of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer who made a name for himself crusading across Wall Street and putting bad guys behind bars. Today's New York Times piece about Governor Spitzer's involvement in a prostitution ring is the worst possible news for Gov. Spitzer's political career. Standing behind Governor Spitzer in today's brief news conference was his wife. I felt so sorry for her having to stand in front of dozens of reporters and millions of television viewers around the country as her husband admitted to causing pain in his marriage.
In Eliot Spitzer short news conference today, with the exception of proclaiming his innocents - he sounded similar to President Bill Clinton when he made his denial of a relationship with Monica Lewinsky years ago. However, former New York Attorney General and now Governor Eliot Spitzer has no chance of surviving politically if these charges turn out to be true. What bothers me the most about Gov. Spitzer getting involved in an illegal prostitution ring is that for years he has stood on his soap box and railed against other people that were doing the same thing he is accused of doing.
Nothing on Earth will bring a notable politician down quicker than a hypocritical personality where that politician does not believe the rules, or in this case the law, applies to them. Eliot Spitzer has no choice but to resign from office or the citizens of New York will go into a full fledged revolt against him personally. I have no idea what must be going through the mind of a person like Governor Spitzer when they prosecute people for crimes and then turn around and commit those same crimes themselves.
When asked late today to comment on the current allegations against Eliot Spitzer, Senator Hillary Clinton had no immediate comment. While today's news about Gov. Spitzer's involvement in a prostitution ring is terrible for the Governor's political career, at the same time it is not good news for Hillary Clinton either because Governor Spitzer's marital misstep will once again remind people about the mischief Senator Clinton's husband got himself into when he was President of the United States. For all practical purposes, Governor Spitzer's political career is over and he should resign his office as soon as possible. Right now Eliot Spitzer should focus on earning the forgiveness of his wife and family and then later that same forgiveness from the people of New York.

Spitzer Must Resign If Charges Are True
College Murders Rise As Experts Wonder Why?
Last week there were two high profile murders of college students. The first took place in Auburn, Alabama at Auburn University and the second one happened at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The victims, Lauren A. Burk from from Auburn and Eve Marie Carson from Chapel Hill were both killed in similar ways, but so far police in both cities have not been able to link these two crimes to the same suspect. These latest senseless murders of college students are only the latest in a sting of single murder crimes and mass murder of students while attending class.
It wasn't that long ago that parents worried little when they sent their children away to college. Most of the time the only trouble they ever got into was with binge drinking or rowdy behavior. However, the days of few worries have long since gone as today's parents worry about the very lives of their children when they travel far away from home to attend college. While guns do contribute to the rising murder rate in colleges, a lack of respect for human life contributes even more.
I was telling a friend the other day that when I was young and growing up back in the 1970's in small town America, almost everyone I knew had access to guns - but no one ever thought about reaching for that gun during a dispute. Yes, there were many time when arguments turned into fist fights or wrestling matches - but never did anyone draw on gun on someone else. Today however, it seems like a gun or a knife is the first thing that kids look for when a dispute turns violent. I don't know why times have changed so much, but they have and in this area of life they have changed for the worse.
While two families are filled with sadness and anger today because of the murder of their two beloved daughters, two killers are still walking the street and if they are not caught it is like they will kill again. It does not help matters that young people, self included back in the day, do not fear anything and even when bad things happen to other people their minds they are able to separate those bad events and still convince themselves that nothing bad will happen to them. I believe the world has always been a violent place to live, but unfortunately there was been a decrease in basic human morality that has caused some people to place little value on anyone except themselves.
