Everyone knows that is dangerous covering a War Zone like in Iraq, but recently in South Carolina a reporter found herself under attack by people at the scene of a recent murder. This new problem of regular people going after reporters is something that should be cracked down on hard by Union, South Carolina police and other departments across the country. It is not surprising that some reporters find themselves in harms way when they try and get reaction from people that have recently suffered from a violent crime. All reporters know the rules of the game and from what I have been able to tell, this one reporter from WSPA-TV was minding her own business when some thug types decided to take out their frustrations on her.
The basic foundation of moral decency has been fading away in America for a long time now and reporters are just the latest victims of two bit thugs that strike out because the perpetrators of these crimes mom and dad did not raise them right. I am at a loss of when the moral fabric of America started to lose it's strength, but it has happened and regular people across this great country are starting to snap and do some pretty crazy stuff. While some of you might think what I am about to say is very judgmental, I hope you will try and see the wisdom in my words in a broad context.
For too long, Americans have been told that what other people do in their private lives is no one else's business. While I mainly agree that we should all mind out own business, the eventual outcome of that thinking leads some people to not have any shame about bad behavior. New sayings like, 'everyone does it', have lead people with weak moral foundations to believe they can do anything they want and not suffer any social consequences for their actions. Minding ones own business is a novel approach to keeping a person's mental well being firmly grounded, but it also could lead to social anarchy if taken too far.
These South Carolina thugs that beat this young and beautiful African-American reporter just because she was doing her job should spend some time in the local slammer for their crime. It do not think WSPA-TV or this report did anything wrong while covering this story and the people that senselessly attacked this young woman like a pack of wild dogs should be ashamed of themselves. Since shame is a moral attribute, I doubt if there is any shame in these individuals that went after this young reporter. Since these folks apparently have not morals to draw upon, maybe the State of South Carolina should invoke long jail sentences on them to show what can happen when they don't restrain their basic animal instincts.

WSPA-TV Reporter Punched While Covering Story
SWA Grounds 44 Planes, Remains On Time
Southwest Airlines got a little bit of bad news a few weeks ago when inspectors from the FAA gave the carrier a bad grade on their maintenance report card. Today, SWA grounded 44 jets in their fleet of aircraft and by the end of the business day they were running 90% on time. While I am making no excuses for bad maintenance on some aircraft flown by SWA, I certainly know first hand that when I fly on their airline - my flight usually leaves and arrives on time.
I cannot make that same statement when it comes to other major US air carriers. Most of the time when I have not flown on SWA, my flight is usually late and my arrival on the other end could be up to two hours late on a good day. Maybe it is because Southwest Airlines home office is in Dallas or simply because of their low ticket prices - but when given a preference I always choose SWA when I need to travel on business or pleasure.
Earlier this week, Southwest Airlines placed three employees on administrative leave which leads me to believe that some employees in the SWA maintenance department were not doing their job properly. The good news is that to date, Southwest Airlines has one of the best safety records in the business with few mishaps that involve personal injury. In addition to the FAA, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has been investigating SWA safety procedures and maintenance.
No one wants to travel on a jet aircraft that is not in good operating condition. This wake up called being sent to SWA will hopefully help that company to get back to properly maintaining their fleet of planes. No airline has a 100% safety record and the good news is that SWA got their maintenance wake up call before any injuries or deaths resulted in flying unsafe aircraft. Even with all this negative news about Southwest Airlines, I would not hesitate to board one of their planes tomorrow.

Mistake For Bush/Cheney To Bomb Iran
There are hints that President Bush and VP Cheney may have plans in the works to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities before they leave office early next year. While most Americans do not know if that decision would be a good one or not because of national security secrets, from a political point of view such a bombing could do permanent damage to John McCain's chances at becoming the next President of the United States. I have had a gut feeling for a long time now that President Bush, has a strong desire to do something militarily toward Iran before his term in office is over.
The past eight years it has become clear to all Americans that President Bush has a mind of his own and if he wants to do something crazy, he's going to do it despite the potential negative consequences. Months ago, radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said that he believed there would be no way President Bush would leave office with Iran's current nuclear facilities operating. Maybe Rush Limbaugh knew something back then that the rest of us are just finding out about in recent days?
Looking back on the last eight years it is hard for me to remember why I voted for President Bush on two different occasions as President. I'm sure the fact that he was from my home state of Texas had something to do with that reasoning as well as my personal anger at the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C.. While I initially supported President Bush when he pushed to invade Iraq, there was always something not right in my gut because US armed forces were invading a country that did not strike us first.
Now it appears that President Bush has more military use of force plans against another country that has not hit the US first. Don't get me wrong, Iran's President is very unstable and he should not be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. The problem for me revolves around my mistrust of President Bush's judgment in these matters after the mistakes that were made by him in Iraq. US intelligence suffered badly in credibility after it's Iraq mistakes and if President Bush uses military force against Iran based on flawed intelligence, once again, it would be a huge mistake.

Florida/Michigan Revote, Questions Remain
Not everyone believes it is a good idea to allow Michigan and Florida to vote again in the 2008 democratic primary. While I understand the frustration among most Democrats with Florida and Michigan's decision not to obey party rules, it would be a huge political mistake to either not count delegate votes from Florida or Michigan or allow party leaders to appoint them at a divided Democratic Convention this summer.
Let's face it, right now millions of people are voting in democratic primaries that have never voted before. The reason for this big increase in voter participation is Barack Obama's campaign for change. While some people believe that Obama will win the general election in a cake walk, I do not think it will be that easy for him to win because first - there are still racist in the US that will never vote for an African-American candidate and second Barack Obama's positions on most issues are very liberal.
For Barack Obama to win in the general election this November, he will need every democratic vote he can get while at the same time appealing to Independents and moderate Republicans. Both Florida and Michigan will be in play this November and the democratic party will need Democrats to turn out in large numbers in both of these state in order to win. To somehow snub voters in Michigan and Florida would be a fatal mistake by Howard Dean and other leaders in the Democratic Party.
It is not uncommon for Democrats to make huge mistakes that cost themselves elections. The very makeup of the modern Democratic Party is dysfunctional at it's core with competing constituencies that want different things. The biggest constituency in the democratic party are loyal African-American voters that turn out in high numbers during most elections. Howard Dean and others at the DNC should consider this fact when they make decisions that will effect voters in Michigan and Florida which in turn will effect the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama.

Spitzer Does Right Thing, Resigns As Governor
In one of the strangest and most twisted stories in a long time, disgraced NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned today because of his involvement in a prostitution ring. The married, with children, Governor Spitzer has turned out to be a two faced hypocrite when it comes to obeying and enforcing the laws of New York State. No one person in my lifetime has placed themselves on a pedestal as high as former NY Attorney General and soon to be former NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer.
When any man or woman decides to act like God and pass judgment on others, that person had better not have any skeletons in their closet or they will eventually fall hard. In recent years we have seen two other politicians get caught up in hypocritical situations as well. Both Mark Foley and Larry Craig took on morality causes in the US Congress while at the same time behaving badly and breaking their promises to voters back home.
Foley and Craig were Republicans while Gov. Spitzer is a Democrat. In my opinion, wrong doing is wrong no matter which political party a politician belongs to. That said, the actions of Gov. Spitzer left himself in a position as not only a hypocrite, but he also opened up the Office of Governor of New York to potential blackmail and conflict of interest issues with members of organized crime. Reportedly, Gov. Spitzer's wife was against him stepping down from office this morning, but I am not going to believe that statement until I hear this scorned woman say that with my own two ears.
Now with Gov. Eliot Spitzer's soon departure from the political scene, the next story will revolve around whether or not the federal government will prosecute him for the crimes he has allegedly committed? In my view, there is no way that the federal government cannot prosecute Eliot Spitzer for breaking the very laws he has sent others away to prison for breaking. However, if convicted, Eliot Spitzer will be serving his time in a federal prison, instead of an over crowded NY State prison where he sent others for committing the same crimes he is accused of committing.
