4th of July Gas Prices Highest In History

Later this week, most Americans will have a long weekend because this year the 4th of July falls on a Friday. In previous years, millions of Americans would load up in their cars and take a trip to either a fireworks show and hitch up their boat to a large SUV or head to a near by lake for a bunch of fun in the sun. However, in 2008 – extremely high gas prices have caused some Americans to rethink how they spend long holiday weekends. This year, gas prices over the 4th of July holiday will be at record levels across America and it is possible that rather than Interstate highways being jammed with traffic, most people might decide to just stay home. As rising gas prices take a larger bite out of the family dollar, Americans are changing their long established routines of jumping in the car and traveling whenever they see fit. In the summer of 2008, this change in family patterns can be best seen in the amount of money that is being spent on movies and DVD rentals instead of at the lake or at far away vacation locations.

Like most Americans, I too have had to modify by vacation choices because of high gas prices and for the most part those modification have been a good thing for me. Until the price of gas made it too expensive to travel to hot vacation spots, for years I ignored many fun things to do right in my own hometown. Most medium to large sized cities are filled with interesting places to go and things to see. For me, many of our local attractions were not even thought about until gas prices went up to over $4 per gallon. However, now I am looking at my own city in a different way and noticing that there are more things to do and see here than I ever noticed before. More than likely there are exciting things to do and see where you live, as well – but until recently those places were also shunned by you in favor of some other place far away. This 4th of July holiday weekend might be a good time to investigate local attractions where you can have fun with the entire family while at the same time saving hundreds of dollars on gasoline.

Someone smart told me a long time ago that it is the choices we make in life that make all of the difference. Until recently, I never consider many local attractions as a good choice for me over a holiday weekend like the 4th of July. However, in recent days I have been rethinking my old ideas of what it takes to have fun over a holiday weekend because there is nothing fun about spending hundreds of dollars on gasoline in order to take a long trip. High gas prices hurt everyone whether they be rich or poor. While Republicans and Democrats continue to take extreme positions on how to solve Americans energy problems, the rest of us are stuck with high gas prices in the process. The good news is that even though most of us cannot afford to travel hundreds of miles in our cars to enjoy the vacation spots we have loved for years, many of us are discovering that there are plenty of fun things to do right in our own hometown. While this 4th of July holiday weekend might be different from others because of high gas prices, that does not mean that most American will not find a way to enjoy their weekend and celebrate this great country that has provided so much to each of us because of freedom.

Bill Clinton Not So Eager To Support Obama

According to some people who are close to former President Bill Clinton, he intends to try and get something out of Senator Barack Obama before he pledges his support to him in the 2008 presidential campaign. I feel sorry for Senator Obama because he is in the same political party as former President Clinton and wife Senator Hillary Clinton. In the history of American politics, no two people have greater egos and suffer from narcissism more than Bill and Hillary Clinton. The American people are so fortunate that we will not have Bill and Hillary in the White House for the next four years. First former President Clinton goes out of his way to say the wrong thing at just the right time to help Obama when his wife was in the race and now he is offering up his services to do the same thing for Senator Obama in the general election. Only the deepest of narcissists would think that the American people are so stupid, while they are so smart when it comes to politics. I have news for former President Clinton – Senator Obama is much smarter than you and he also has witnessed all of your political tricks before and most likely wants to keep you as far away from the White House, if he is elected, as possible.

I have never understood why so many people in the democratic party have this deep love for former President Bill Clinton. From the day they first met him, he did nothing but lie to them and his wife about his morality problems and just like Hillary – most Democrats just excused his bad behavior which allowed him to continue to disrespect his wife and this country. The majority of Democrats that continued to love and follow former President Clinton though all of his moral misdeeds are no better than absent parents that continue to look the other way while their children get into trouble. Some people never seem to learn one of the most important lessons in life and that is without consequences, children and yes some adults like former President Clinton never seem to grow up and live their lives in a responsible way. It is unbelievable to me that many female Democrats actually voted for Hillary Clinton for President because she stayed married to Bill Clinton even though his was disrespecting her and their marriage over the years. To me, it takes no real guts to stick around a bad marriage and allow someone like Bill Clinton to continue to disrespect you. However, it does take guts to leave a powerful person like former President Clinton and say to him and everyone else that you as a person will not be taken for granted and public humiliated by his bad conduct.

Now former President Clinton intends to use his same narcissistic, strong armed, tactics against Senator Barack Obama. Hopefully, Senator Obama will do what no one else in the democratic party has had the guts to do and that is to tell former President Clinton that he is now a follower and not a leader in the party anymore. Also, it is high time that someone smarter than Bill Clinton dress the former President down about how his previous bad behavior has not only hurt the democratic party, but also his wife. Like a self adsorbed child, Bill Clinton needs a grown up to let him know that his previous bad behaviors have hurt other people and he must be punished, in some way, for those misdeeds. For all those Democrats that continued to praise former President Clinton while he was disrespecting his wife and this country, I hope you will now see what happens to a narcissist when they are not forced to pay a price for their bad behavior. Now the democratic party and it's new leader Barack Obama are being forced to deal with an out of control child, dressed in adult clothing, because voters in the democratic party years ago did not punish Bill Clinton when he disrespected his wife and them with his bad conduct.

Saudi Arabia/OPEC Screw Us Again

Tonight, shortly before I went to bed – I noticed that MSNBC, the liberal propaganda machine of our age, had a headline story on their web site that said, 'new oil field discovery in Saudi Arabia might just help reduce the price of gas in the United States'. Well isn't that just special coming on the heals of the United States government preparing to allow offshore oil drilling in the United States and also allowing further expansion of oil exploration in Alaska? Of course, the liberal hacks that run MSNBC long ago sold their soul's to the environmental movement and they also send out a steady dribble of liberal propaganda to anyone that will listen to it on a daily basis from their headquarters at 30 Rock. The liberal environmentalist that plague this great land know that their 'Global Warming' mission to separate all of us from our money via excessive taxation is failing right now because of high gas prices. So to help further the 'green movement' they are now giving average Americans a way to still stay green and get cheap gas prices at the same time.

The more I study and watch the worldwide environmental movement which preaches the gloom and doom of 'Global Warming' the more I realize that these extremist are less concerned about the real damages that might be caused by Global Warming more so than their desire to control all of us into behavior that will make them rich. Is it possible that the powers that be in the Global Warming movement might have just created the Global Warming issue to help combated the day when their policies created high gas prices? In my mind it's not that big of a stretch to believe that to be the case, considering Global Warming leaders like Al Gore do not practice the words that they preach to everyone else. Almost everyday, the people that are front and center in the Global Warming movement not only do not practice what they preach, but they work overtime to try and discredit any scientist or regular American that dares to disagree with their view of man made Global Warming as a fact. One political leader even suggested the other day that employees of oil companies be jail if they don't follow the current liberal view that man made Global Warming is real.

For most of my life I have listened to liberal and conservative extremist that all have one thing in common and that is they want to control average Americans that just want to be left alone from both sides. However, when it comes to extremist politics – the United States has continued to drift downward as conservatives and liberals have tried to pull all of us down to their narrow vision of what this country should really stand for. Now, just as it appears that the U.S. Congress is preparing to allow more domestic oil drilling in the United States – Saudi Arabia and their liberal friends in the U.S. environmental movement have stepped in to allow American to once again feel good by being green while at the same time having cheap gasoline for their cars and trucks. No one, especially me, is proclaiming that the leaders of Saudi Arabia are stupid. Instead, they are smart and along with their new friends in the green and Global Warming movement are allowing the American people once again to be drawn into a false sense of security when it comes to energy independence.

Will President Bush Bomb Iran This Fall?

With each passing day it appears that President George W. Bush may be planning to leave the White House in a blaze of glory by bombing Iran before the next President is elected and sworn into office. For a long time now it has been clear to most Americans that President Bush is more than just a tough talking cowboy President, but he usually follows through with what he thinks is best for the country even if hardly anyone else agrees with him. While it might be in the best long term interest of the United States to bomb Iranian nuclear assembly plants, it is not in the best interest of anyone for President Bush to make that decision only weeks before leaving office. President Bush has the lowest public approval rating of any President of the United States in history because he has not followed the will of the people he is suppose to serve, but he has instead gone his own way when making military decisions that will effect this country for years after he is no longer our President.

Almost no one with the exception of far right conservatives have any faith left in President George W. Bush and if he thinks he will be doing Senator John McCain a service by bombing Iran before this November's election – he is sadly mistaken. In a tragic misstatement by a high level McCain staffer the other day, it was said that a terrorist attack on the United States before this November's election might enhance Senator McCain's chances of victory against Senator Obama. One would think that President Bush is smart enough to know the difference between a domestic terrorist attack on the U.S. Homeland from a bombing campaign he choses to make from the Oval Office against Iran? Right now I have no idea what is in the mind of President Bush, but people close to the President – like radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh - have been saying now for almost a year that they cannot image President Bush leaving office without militarily dealing with Iran's nuclear program. In reality, President Bush has been more than willing to go his own way when using the power of U.S. armed forced and in my opinion – bombing Iran before he leaves office is almost a certainty.

While there is no law to prevent President Bush from unilaterally bombing Iran's nuclear facilities before he leaves office next November, common sense should tell any intelligent person that doing such a thing would be a disaster for the United States of America. In a sad sort of way, President Bush has always been his own worst enemy when it comes to dealing with international crisis' since terrorist attack the United States on September 11th, 2001. If President Bush were thinking of what is in the best interest of the United States and his own Republican Party, he would take a pass on bombing Iran in the waining days of his administration and leave that task to the Israelis. Of course, we have all learned the hard way that most of the time President Bush will make the wrong choice when given the option of using U.S. military force against other countries. While President Bush was right to go after terrorist in Afghanistan after they harbored the terrorist that attack this country. In hindsight the Bush decision to invade Iraq and now potentially to bomb Iran before leaving office will be one of the poorest choices President Bush will make.

Why Are Diesel Prices Higher Than Gas?

When I was in high school back in the 1970's, gasoline was selling for thirty two (.32) cents per gallon. At that time the price of diesel was about three cents (.03) per gallon. What has happened over the past 35 years to cause diesel to now cost almost one dollar per gallon more than gasoline? While I don't know for sure, my guess would be that the U.S. federal government started taxing diesel fuel more harshly than gasoline and somehow in the process, the major oil companies discover that a fuel they once considered little more than a wasteful by product in the production of gasoline could be turned into a very profitable fuel in it's own right. The main reason that the cost of diesel is effecting other products like food is because those products are shipped to supermarkets around the country in diesel powered big rig trucks. It did take a few months for the increasing price of diesel to start to raise the price of food at supermarkets, but once the increases in food costs started to kick in – hardly a week goes by without all basic food products increasing in price.

So what is the real reason why diesel is selling for almost one dollar per gallon more than gasoline? In a nut shell, the worldwide global warming movement have pushed government officials to clean up diesel quality and in doing so the major oil companies have found a way to increase their own profits in the process. In a little talked about trick, oil companies are able to rise the price of fuels like diesel and blame those increases in price on government regulation. Republicans are always talking about how too many government regulation cause the price of goods and services to increase beyond what they should and when it comes to the price of diesel, dozen of environmental changes that were required at the government level, helped oil companies to continue to raise the price of diesel much higher than gasoline. In reality, every time U.S. oil companies are required to further clean up one of their products like diesel they are able to raise the price of that product and earn additional profit, while at the same time blaming the government for the price increase.

It is more than just truck drivers and the companies that they work for that are suffering because of over inflated diesel fuel prices. Tens of thousands of American farmers are losing money, sometimes that they do not have, to fill up their tractors in order to grow the food we all need to survive. As diesel prices continue to approach $5 per gallon in most parts of the country, increased food costs will begin to take their toll especially on the poor. It is important to remember that the increased costs associated with growing and delivering food to the market will be passed on to the end consumer either sooner or later in this process. While most Americans solely focus on the cost of gasoline, in reality it is the high cost of diesel that is causing their grocery store costs to continue to increase week after week. In this day and age of Congress holding hearings on everything else, maybe someone should call a public hearing in Washington and explain to the American people why diesel fuel is selling for almost one dollar per gallon more than regular unleaded gasoline.

Obama/McCain Different In Most Ways

With the current political divide almost at 50/50 these days, I guess it should not comes as a surprise to anyone that Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain are totally different when it comes to ideas to help solve Americas problems. In no area are these two men more different than when it comes to the issue of what, if anything should be done about Iran and it's march forward to create and deploy nuclear weapons. Senator McCain is more aligned with the policies of the Bush administration and he would be more inclined to take military action against Iran to keep them from developing a nuclear weapon. However, Senator Obama believes that the United States should be talking to Iran rather than threatening them with military force if they do not stop development of their nuclear program. My guess is that 50% of Americans agree with Obama and the other 50% agree with McCain on the issue of what to do about Iran.

On the important issue of rising health care costs, Senator Obama wants to create a national heath insurance system that will cover any American that wants to take part in it. Senator McCain wants to leave the current U.S. health care system alone and believes that it already is the best system in the world for those that can afford it. On the issue of health care, my heart tells me that McCain is right – but my mind tells me that something does need to be done to stop the out-of-control price increases of medical care in the United States. More than likely, my attitude of health care is influenced because I have good health insurance through my employer. However, if I was not covered with group health insurance at work, my attitude about the government offering national health insurance might be completely different. I'll bet that most Americans attitude about national health insurance is influenced a great deal by whether or not they personally have quality health insurance where they work.

Then there is the issue of the War in Iraq. Like President Bush, Senator McCain wants to stay in Iraq as long as it takes to get the government there strong enough to defend itself against hostile neighbors both inside and outside that country. On the other hand, Senator Obama wants to immediately start withdrawing American troop when he is elected President and he would like to see all of our troops out of Iraq within a couple of years after he takes office. Once again the American people are divided on what is the best course of action to take in Iraq, but on this one issue that divide is not 50/50, but more like 70% who agree with Obama and 30% that agree with McCain. The bad news for Senator Obama is that most Americans no longer look at the War in Iraq as one of their top tier issues when it comes to which candidate they will vote for as President. In fact, the biggest issue of them all – the rising price of gas has not even been seriously discussed by either Obama or McCain because both men know that the current high price of gas is the number one issue in this years campaign and neither man wants to be seen on the wrong side of this issue just before Americans show up to start voting in November.

Gas Prices Are Going Down, How Much?

There was some good news released this weekend that gas prices are going down because low summer consumption is increasing the worldwide supply of gasoline. While it is good news that increased supplies of gasoline are causing the price of gas to go down, the question I have is – how much will the price per gallon of gas decrease and how soon will it get there? Unfortunately, all of us have become so use to $4 per gallon gas that if the price drops back down to $3 per gallon we will feel pretty good about that drop. In reality, I don't think the price per gallon of gas will go back down to $3 per gallon this year – but I have been wrong before when it comes to understanding the monopolistic policies of OPEC. The worldwide oil market has been a sham for years as the countries that have the oil all work together as a syndicate to keep the price of crude oil at artificially high levels.

Now with U.S. consumption dropping because Americans cannot afford the current high price of gas, I have no doubt that the powers that be in OPEC will just slow down the amount of crude oil they sell on the worldwide market which will cause the price of crude oil and then gasoline to rise once again. The sad fact is that there are still some powerful people in the United States that do not want to drill for more crude oil right here in this country. Even as the U.S. economy goes into the tank and the price of other necessities are rising along with the price of gas – they still want the United States not to search for more domestic crude oil. In reality, the only reason there was even a possibility that the U.S. government would once again allow offshore oil drilling was because the price of gas had risen to over $4 per gallon. In reality, if the price of gas now goes back down to around $3 per gallon – the pressure will be off of lawmaker to open up offshore oil drilling and expanded drilling in the State of Alaska.

There is a side of me that believes that OPEC might turn up the volume of crude oil as consumption goes down in order to stop the increase in domestic U.S. crude oil drilling and also to set back other energy alternatives that are being developed right now. Since we all know that OPEC does not want increased drilling of crude oil within the United States and most certainly they do not want to see any energy alternative developed that might bring to an end their monopoly. It is not hard for me to make the stretch necessary to believe that in their own self interest, OPEC might force the price of gas down as much as possible before this November's U.S. general election. The all out manipulation of the worldwide oil market will continue until a real leader is elected as President that can look past the current game of manipulated crude oil prices increases and decreases and make a long term decision that the U.S. government will both drill for more domestic oil and invest heavily into the research and development of energy alternatives.

Obama Wants To Increase Taxes On Wealthy Americans

Before long, there will be a debate about how much – if any – the U.S. government should increase taxes on wealthy Americans. Senator Barack Obama is on record supporting increasing the taxes on married Americans that earn over $250,000 per year and for single taxpayers he places the level at $200,000. On the other hand, Senator John McCain is against raising taxes on all Americans as well as wanting to lower taxes even further for everyone. In some ways, Barack Obama's message of change does not apply to old liberal ideas of class warfare and taxing the rich into the poor house. There is no doubt that the United States is in financial trouble right now, but the reason for our financial difficulties is not that the American people, rich or poor, are not taxed enough – but it is the fault of out of control spending by Members of Congress.

While there are Americans that dislike people that are rich, just as many or more Americans inspire to eventually become wealthy themselves. While it might make some Americans feel good knowing that the federal government is taking away some of the money of rich people, in reality – once the government takes their money they are more likely to waste it on pet pork projects than to put the money to good use in helping out the poor. Time and time again, the American people have watched their elected representative waste the tax money that is already sent in to Washington D.C. through the current tax system. Now democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama wants to increase taxes on the rich or the folks he considers as rich in order to give wasteful government leaders even more cash to help promote their pet projects. So far in the 2008 election campaign, I have not heard Senator Barack Obama address the wasteful nature of his friends in colleagues in the Congress. However, he seems dead set on increasing the taxes of people he proclaims to be rich.

The biggest problem with increasing the taxes on the rich is that in some parts of the country, $250,000 is most definitely an amount of money that would qualify them as rich, but in other areas - $250,000 per year turns out to be much less money in real buying terms. Most people that live in New York City or Los Angeles who earn at least $250,000 per year are not considered rich. However, here in Central Texas where the cost of housing and other necessities of life are lower, $250,000 per year would be considered adequate to qualify a person as rich. Under Senator Obama's new tax the rich plan, he does not take into account the part of the country a person lives in when he sets his 'one size fits all' tax the rich figure. Personally, I would much rather see politicians like Senator Obama deal with the current out-of-control spending problems in Washington before he tries to take more money from hard working Americans. While there are many attractive policy positions that Senator Obama stands for, his outdated liberal agenda of always wanting to increase the taxes on high income Americans is not one of his more shining issues of change.

Electric Cars The Solution To High Gas Prices?

Over the next few years, there will be a massive push of money which should spur further development of electric car technology. For decades, people involved in the electric car business have been pushing Americans toward their product, but because of the cost and the short distances these types of vehicle could travel - few Americans even considered the possibility of owning one. The closest most people have come to observing an electric car in action has been on the golf course. The golf chart has been around for years and millions of Americans have driven one. The first thing that strike a person while driving a golf chart is how quite it is compared to an automobile or motorcycle engine. Like the golf cart, electric cars are quite as well and that is one of their biggest selling points. The biggest downside to current electric car technology is that a car that is powered solely on electric power cannot travel long distances without being recharged. The newest hybrid cars are a mix of electric power and an engine that starts in order to recharge the battery when it gets low.

There are two areas of research that could take electric cars from the sidelines and put them into the mainstream of personal vehicles. The most promising area of research being done today involve newer types of battery design that will allow the battery to maintain a larger charge for a longer period of time. The other area of research, which is years behind newer battery technology is the development of super solar cells that will have the ability to charge a car battery, quickly, using sunlight. Soon, General Motors (GM) will released their much talked about new model called the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt is designed to run further than a normal hybrid car on it's electrical power and it also has a smaller, three cylinder engine that will kick in to charge the battery when it begins to lose it's charge from use. Unlike regular hybrid vehicles, the Volt will use it's small engine to charge the battery instead of using the engine solely to propel the car down the road when the driver reaches higher speeds.

While details are still sketchy on exactly how much gas the Chevrolet Volt will use when traveling at highway speeds, most experts believe that the MPG of the Volt will be somewhere between 70 and 80 MPG on the highway. Considering 35 MPG is currently seen as a good MPG rating, the Chevrolet Volt will more than double that mileages per gallon benchmark. I believe that electric powered cars are the future of transportation in the world today and with high crude oil prices leading to higher gas prices - the money and the brainpower needed to develop even better electric cars will be available for major future breakthroughs. To me, the ultimate secret to the development and long term use of an electric car will finally become mainstream only when researchers are able to find a way to harness the tremendous power of the sun. When that major breakthrough happens, it not only will change the types of cars we drive - but it will also change the way we heat and cool are homes as well.

When and if researchers are able to harness the power of the sun and efficiently turn that energy source into electric power, not only will America solve it's long term energy needs - but at the same time we will be reducing pollution. Right now, member nations of OPEC should be concerned about what major breakthroughs in electric technology will mean to their future when this world does not need fossil fuels to survive anymore. However, right now most OPEC nations are living high because crude oil is selling for such a high price. Down the road, hopefully in my lifetime, there will be major breakthroughs in battery and solar conversion technology that will make the member nations of OPEC obsolete. At some future date, our children will look upon the once powerful OPEC nations as little more than the 'robber barons' of our century and their history books will show that eventually the people of the world got tired of being ripped off and in the process developed new energy technology that changed this planet for the good.

Obama/Clinton Team Up To Battle McCain

The past few days, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have been making nice for the cameras in a show a democratic unity. Of course, most of these pats on the back are not real because both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama still wear scares from their primary campaign against each other. According to most professional political observers, there is little chance now that Barack Obama will select Hillary Clinton as his running mate - so the tension between these two politicians is like to continue for quite some time. What Hillary Clinton needs the most from Barack Obama is his help in retiring her multi million dollar campaign debt. On the other hand what Barack Obama needs from Hillary Clinton is for her to keep her mouth shut and to hide her husband Bill away in some location where he won't be able to damage Obama's general election campaign.

In a show of democratic unity, Hillary Clinton will be seen at several events over the next few days praising Obama and trying to convince her voters that they should support him in November. After these retire Hillary's debt events, I doubt if we will see much of Senator Clinton again until this summers Democratic National Convention. In both major political party's there are always these 'big bear hug' photo ops where the losing candidate in a hard fought primary campaign is shown smiling, clapping and acting like there are no hard feelings. In reality, we all know that something very different is happening down deep inside of the losing candidates soul, but that is just how the game is played in politics and everyone knows the rules before they run. Despite the hard feelings, I now believe that Hillary Clinton might want to serve as Senator Obama's Vice-President. However, Hillary has a huge problem in the fact that her husband Bill does not know how to play number two in a campaign.

As I have said before, somewhere deep down in the enter core of both Bill and Hillary Clinton they really want Senator Obama to lose his general election campaign to Senator McCain. Of course, no words to that effect will ever leave their mouths, but if McCain wins - Hillary would have a chance to run for the democratic nomination again in four years. Why she would want to do that is something I do not understand, but there are many personality traits of the Clinton's that have left me scratching my head, before. Every public event that Bill and Hillary Clinton attend between now and election day will be completely hypocritical. While both Bill and Hillary Clinton will proclaim their support for Barack Obama, most observers will be closely watching their body language attempting to see what they really think and believe. Senator Obama is a very smart man and he knows as well as anyone that Bill Clinton might try to deep six his campaign using slick talk, just like the former president did in his wife's campaign.

Now we all watch and wait to see what major issues catch fire during the 2008 general election. I am on record saying, many times, that I believe the only major issue that will face voters this November is the energy crisis. While candidates will debate the wisdom of getting our troops out of Iraq and the pros and cons of the current U.S health care system, at the end of the day gas prices will determine which candidate will win in November. There are many lifelong Republicans that are in fear of this years general election because they don't have a good play book put together on how to defeat Obama. The GOP would have much preferred to run against Hillary Clinton because no other democratic candidate fires up the GOP based more than her. From now until election day, focus your mind on which candidate has the best ideas of how to deal with high gas prices and then watch that candidate win the 2008 race for President.

OPEC Predicts Even Higher Gas Prices

For the people that have watched gas prices drop just a small amount over the past few days in many areas of the country, leaders in OPEC were quick to douse those feelings of excitement in a statement today. In the months ahead, OPEC is predicting that crude oil prices will rise to around $170 dollars per barrel over the short run. Most Americans have learned to hate the organization called OPEC because that one group of countries is seen by most people as the cause of today's high gasoline prices. Before OPEC was created, the crude oil business was supply and demand driven just like most other world markets. However, OPEC was created for one sole purpose and that was to control the supply and demand of crude oil and in the process manipulate worldwide oil prices higher.

While member nations of OPEC are getting rich beyond their wildest dreams, the rest of us are suffering to pay over inflated gas prices. Of course, it is easy to blame all of our problems on OPEC - but in reality the American people are just as much to blame for high gas prices as the leaders of OPEC nations. For far too long, the American people have focused most of their attention on green issues which are working to clean up the planet Earth. While that process is a noble one, too much focus on green change has caused the United States to discourage drilling for crude oil within our own country. Now in 2008, the American people find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to meeting this countries energy needs. On one hand, everyone wants to clean up the environment, but on the other hand - no one wants to pay $5 per gallon gas prices to do it.

Since gas prices have risen so fast, now there is a great danger that the U.S. government in the form of the Congress will over react to the current energy crisis in the United States and start allowing oil drilling anywhere and everywhere without fully thinking out the consequences. While it may sound like I am an environmentalist, nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, the reason why the United States is facing an oil crisis right now is because of the uncompromising attitude of extreme environmentalist that have stopped safe oil discovery for too many years. That smart by half attitude has placed the entire environmental movement at a big disadvantage, right now, as gas prices will force Congress to potentially act in an irresponsible way to appease voters that are tired of paying high prices for gasoline. Because of stubbornness, the environmental movement will now see it's hard work set back years as Congress rushes to allow American oil companies to drill for more crude oil here in the United States.

While it may not be fair to blame the high price a gasoline on OPEC, since there is plenty of blame to go around right here in the United States, I do believe it is fair to blame OPEC for trying to take advantage of the American people when we are down. Member nations of OPEC, while providing billions of barrels of crude oil to an energy starved world, have not shown themselves to be a friend of this country. For decades, the United States has provided military arms and other intelligence information to most of these nations in order to stabilize the region and to keep dictators that are friendly to us in power. While we can all debate the wisdom of propping up dictatorships in order to keep cheap oil flowing to the United States, that policy has helped us all financially over the years. Right now it is critical to keep the pressure on OPEC to pump more oil and it is also critical that America drill for more oil in the United States, as well.

Will Supreme Court Appointments Turn Out Conservatives?

I talked to an old friend on the telephone yesterday about the upcoming election. This friend is a very conservative person. When I told him I was leaning toward voting for Obama in November, he said – before you do that, please consider what kind of Supreme Court justices Obama will appoint to the high court? Like myself, this friend believes that Senator John McCain is not a conservative – but for my ultra conservative friend, McCain would be a better friend to conservatives when it comes to appointing justices to the Supreme Court than would Barack Obama. I do agree with my friend that liberal judges and the U.S. Supreme Court have become more like activist in recent years than strict interpreters of the constitution. However, will the fear of what kind of Supreme Court appointment Senator Barack Obama nominate turn out sufficient numbers of social conservatives on election day to deliver Senator John McCain a victory?

In my opinion, the answer to that question is no. Just like in most national elections, the winner of the 2008 race for the White House will not be selected for any one issue, with the possible exception this year of who will do the best job at getting the price of gas down. Unfortunately for my friend and other true believer GOP social conservatives, the primary issue they care most about – abortion is not a front and center issue in the 2008 election. While I do not want the U.S. Supreme Court to drift back toward it's 1960's and 1970's liberal activist past, like most Americans I will not make my decision on which candidate to vote for in November based solely on what the ideological make up of the Supreme Court appointments will might be. Leaders in the GOP know that social conservatives do not like Senator McCain, so the only real way to get them to vote for him in November is to scare them with what kind of potential Supreme Court appointments Senator Obama will make if he is elected.

What many people do not know is that extreme conservatives, just like their liberal counterparts, care more about their ideology than they do about the political party they belong to. Most members of the Republican and Democratic Party's are always faithful to their party's nominee, but for people that put their own personal ideology ahead of their political party they will quickly leave the party if that party's establishment do not agree with them on almost every issue. When the GOP nominated Senator John McCain to be their candidate in 2008, most hard-core social conservatives have threatened to not vote for him in November because they do not believe he is conservative enough to meet their ideological standards. So, in a desperate attempt to get social conservatives to the polls, GOP cheerleaders are trying to scare GOP social conservatives to the polls in November to vote for McCain based solely on the fear of what the U.S. Supreme Court will look like after eight years of an Obama presidency.

I really don't think the GOP establishment is going to get enough social conservatives to vote for Senator John McCain by making them fear Senator Obama's Supreme Court appointments. At the end of the day, the person that wins the White House usually has more people voting for their ideas and leadership potential rather than people showing up to vote for the other guy because of fear. I believe Senator John McCain has a very uphill fight in November against Barack Obama and fearing Supreme Court appointments is not going to be enough to get social conservatives to vote for John McCain. I still believe that the election in 2008 is all about high energy prices and the one candidate that can prove to most Americans that he can do something about it, will eventually win the White House in November.

Moped Wanted To Save Gas, Weight Requirements?

A few days ago I was joking with a coworker about my desire to buy a Moped to save money on gas. This coworker kind of smiled and asked if there was a weight limit for those little Mopeds. We both laughed and I said, well if I am too heavy for a Moped, I can just push it down the road until I get up enough speed to jump on and drive it. For years, average Americans have made jokes about Moped's – but few people are laughing, at this little motor scooter that more resembles a bicycle than a motorcycle, anymore. With the ever increasing price of gas, alternative means of transportation are being looked at more closely today than ever before and one of those transportation alternatives is the Moped. They don't go very fast and the high pitched sound of their tiny engines can be pick out from block away, but a Moped gets good gas miles and that's what people are looking for today.

While I am only joking about purchasing a Moped, for other people – much younger and thinner than I, it could be a viable option to help them save money on gas. Most of the Moped's that I have seen in use these days have been on college campuses. For a student that needs to move several blocks between classes, it looks like a Moped would be prefect for their daily needs. However, I would not recommend a Moped to someone that must navigate busy streets and highways during their daily activities because it appears to be dangerous for any vehicle that cannot keep up with the regular traffic flow to even be on those busy streets and highways. While Moped's might be a good choice when trying to save money, from outward appearances they don't seem to be environmentally friendly. Every time I have seen a Moped moving, there is a huge amount of black smoke being pushed out of it's muffler.

Unless gas prices go back down soon, we will all see a tremendous change in the size and shapes of the vehicles people chose to drive. It wasn't that long again when huge SUVs were the number one vehicle on the road. However, with each passing day – I am seeing fewer SUVs in my daily travels and soon they might become as extinct as the Edsel. Everyone, both rich and poor and old and young are looking for cheaper ways to get from point A to point B. While smaller cars are all the rage right now, it won't be long before even smaller cars will take their place. For the long term health of the Earth, using less fossil fuels is of benefit. However, the current changes from large SUVs to ever smaller cars is a huge adjustment for most Americans to make and these changes are more based on necessity than a desire to improve the environment.

Whether it be ever smaller cars that run on a mixture of battery and gasoline power called hybrids or in the case of some people purchasing small scooters like Moped's – the driving habits of all Americans are changing rapidly. Just like with other questionable public behavior like smoking cigarettes, I can see a day coming soon when people that still drive huge SUVs might be publicly criticized by other Americans for their wasteful choice of vehicle. While I totally disagree with people ridiculing others for the choices they make, that does not mean that other, more closed minded Americans, might not try to guilt their friends and neighbors into giving up their gas guzzling SUVs. In the future a person might sell their huge SUV and once sold, pull a Moped out of the back to drive back home. The American people are changing fast because of high gas prices.

Congressman Chet Edwards Suggested As Obama VP

I found out yesterday that Central Texas Congressman Chet Edwards was recommended by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to the Obama presidential campaign as a person they should consider for Vice-President. When asked about this Pelosi statement, Congressman Edwards said he was humbled that his name was even mentioned for that position. Chet Edwards is my Congressman and I am proud that he received this high honor from the leader of his party. Of course, if Congressman Edwards is selected by democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama to become his running mate, the residents of Central Texas will lose him as our representative in Congress if Obama eventually wins the election in November. While many Central Texas residents might want to hold onto Chet Edwards as our Congressman, if selected as Senator Obama's VP candidate he should accept that position because he has earned it.

The best thing Congressman Chet Edwards could bring to Senator Obama as his Vice-President is a down the middle approach to dealing with this nations problems. Above anything else, Congressman Edwards is a moderate that continues to get reelected, as a Democrat, in one of the most GOP leaning districts in the country. Another interesting and excellent attribute to Congressman Chet Edwards is that he is a behind the scenes player in Washington D.C.. Rather than appearing on national television talks shows touting what he wants to accomplish, instead he works with his colleagues in both party's to find compromises that can pass into law. When a very liberal Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and a right leaning conservative like myself can both agree on the same guy as a good potential running mate for Senator Obama – that should tell the Obama campaign that Congressman Edwards might be their right choice as Vice-President.

In addition to playing most important issues right down the middle, Congressman Edwards has a deep and abiding love for the men and women that serve or who have served in the U.S. armed forces. It is clear to anyone that closely scrutinizes Chet Edwards career in the U.S. House of Representative, that he has a deep love and respect for the men and women that serve in the military. He also is quick to jump to the assistance of military members and their families when Washington bureaucrats sometimes forget that their job is to take care of veterans and not try and find ways to trick them out of the hard earned benefits they have earned through various laws that have been passed to honor their service to this country. Considering Senator Obama's position to get out of Iraq as soon as possible, Congressman Edwards would be the best man in the United States to make sure that our honored soldiers were not blamed for the War in Iraq, just because they did their patriotic duty.

In respect to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi suggesting the name of Congressman Chet Edwards to the Obama president team, I say 'way to go' Chet. You have earned the right to be considered for such a high government office and if select and Senator Obama wins in November, you will make a great Vice-President of the United States. If Senator Obama is elected in November, which seems likely right now – he is going to need strong moderate voices in his administration that know how to work one on one with Members of Congress in order to make the big changes this country needs. Congressman Chet Edwards is probably the best person in Washington D.C. today to work those halls of Congress to help Barack Obama succeed in his effort to change America. In my opinion, if Senator Obama is elected as our next President – Congressman Chet Edwards, if not selected as his VP, would make an excellent Secretary of Veterans Affairs, as well.

New Laws Needed To Control Paparazzi Behavior

Tonight I visited a popular entertainment website and on their front page they had several video clips that showed famous Hollywood stars being pursued like animals by the paparazzi. These mainly guys, that were following around these stars, seemed little more than thugs with a camera in the way they talked and the total disrespect that showed to the people they were photographing. It was clear to me after watching these few short clips tonight that something needs to be done legally to place some kind of control on the paparazzi mainly in Hollywood. Not only are the paparazzi putting themselves and the stars they are photographing in danger, there are also regular by standers on the street that could be knocked over by these pack of thugs or worst, their constant camera flashes could cause a major traffic accident.

There has always been a love/hate relationship between Hollywood stars and the people that rush up to them on the street to take their picture. However, in the past few years – the Hollywood paparazzi has become much more aggressive and to put it bluntly, many are down right rude in their treatment of the stars that provide their meal ticket. While watching one of the video clips tonight where it appeared dozens of members of the paparazzi were stalking Cameron Diaz and yelling out to her while she was driving, mean and inappropriate comments like 'come to daddy' showed me the tremendous disrespect the paparazzi has for the stars that they cover. Mainly in Southern California, it appears that the paparazzi has become so out of control that new laws need to be passed there to not only protect the stars that are being photographed, but the general public that might find themselves in between a star and the pack of paparazzi that is following them.

What is really behind this massive new thrust of paparazzi is not their love and adoration of the the stars that they follow, but it is cold hard cash that they are hoping to reap at the end of each day. With some pictures selling for upwards of $100,000 – it is no wonder that many people with a camera will suddenly start following stars around looking for that one picture that could earn them one hundred grand. Of course, if the American people were not so star stuck in the first place – there would not be a marketplace for these kinds of pictures. Unfortunately, there are millions of Americans that try to enhance what they consider to be their boring lives by creating a subliminal friendship with a star they have never met. Add to that problem, bottom feeding publishers that have neither morals or simple common decency and you have a situation that has lead to this paparazzi crisis.

I know the American Constitution guarantees free speech and a free press, but there must be some kind of middle ground in the law that will provide some kind of safeguards to the public while at the same time preserving the rights of free speech and freedom of the press. Hollywood tabloids and the paparazzi that feed them this garbage are known for saying that they are only covering things that people want to see and read about. However, just because some of us believe in the death penalty, does not mean that we want to cook up some popcorn and watch people get put to death on prime-time television. Without some kind of rule of law, this whole paparazzi problem is going to get worse and before long it will become common place to hear that someone was serious injured or killed because they found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time with members of the paparazzi.

Gas Price Chart Looks Like Bull Market Run

The other day I was looking at a multi-year chart of the daily and weekly changes in the price of gas and to me, that chart looked like a stock market chart I saw once of the NASDAQ back in the late 1990's. Just like with the NASDAQ back in the late 1990's, the price of gas goes up and up, then it has a small pull back in price before it starts going up once again. In the stock market, these small pull backs are called corrections and it is amazing to me how that multi-year chart of the price changes of gasoline looked very similar to a stock market bull run. Of course, there is a big difference in a stock market bull run and looking at a gas price chart. For one thing, in a stock market bull run, most people are making money. However, when gas prices do the same thing, most people are losing money.

After looking at that multi-year gas prices chart I began to ask myself if it was possible that gas prices might enter a bear market, soon? That is what happened to the NASDAQ in the early 2000's after several years of excessive growth. While the worldwide crude oil market is not like the NASDAQ or any other stock market, I do think there is a good chance that in the years to come, the excessive prices that people are paying for crude oil right now, might cause a crude oil price crash. Worldwide markets have never rewarded tremendous and quick growth in any market over the long haul. Instead, most out-of-control expansions in the stock market have been eventually torn down to a point that it takes decades for their previous highs to once again be reached. Could the current gas prices bull run collapse one day and turn that industry into a bear market? I certainly hope so.

The biggest difference between a stock market, like the NASDAQ, and the worldwide crude oil market is that the price of crude oil is manipulated by OPEC while stock markets are not. However, with each passing day that crude oil is selling for over $100 per barrel, oil exploration around the world increases and at some point in time that marketplace will grow to be so large that OPEC will no longer be able to control it. One of the biggest fears that members nations of OPEC have is that the American people will get tired of paying their over inflated high prices for crude oil and start drilling for more crude oil right here in the United States. John McCain's idea of allowing offshore oil drilling recently, will most certainly be opposed by most nations that are members of OPEC, because the last thing they want to see is more competition which will reduce the power of their OPEC monopoly organization.

In a way, seeing that chart of how gas prices have changed over the past couple of years and comparing it to the bull run of the NASDAQ back in the late 1990's, it gave me hope high crude oil prices might also be near a crash. One thing is for sure and that is change is inevitable in this world and the more any of us try to slow or stop change, the more frustrated we become. My hope is that like the NASDAQ stock market of the late 1990's, the current worldwide crude oil market will eventually crash to the point where lower gas prices will be the norm instead of the exception. Only time will tell if the crude oil market will crash, but the longer oil prices stay high – the more businesses and nations will explore for and find new sources of this fuel.

Obama Off Course, McCain Right On Target

Everyday I wake up to some news story where John McCain is thinking out of the box and trying to come up with ideas to help Americans solve our energy problems - while during the same time period, Barack Obama is talking about something he has no control over. Yesterday, when John McCain suggested offering an invention lottery worth $300 million to a person or persons that could develop new automobile battery technology, Barack Obama was insulting conservative Christians with his personal interpretation of the Bible. Regular readers here know that I am no fan of John McCain and I have also said that my intention is to vote for Barack Obama in November. However, something is very wrong in the Barack Obama campaign right now and if he wants to win in November he must focus on the number one issue at hand and that is high energy prices.

To me, Barack Obama seems to have his head in the sand right now when it comes to combating high energy prices. The likely reason is because some of his most generous supporters are 'green thinkers' who are totally against searching for additional crude oil supplies inside the United States. While many people that vote a single issue, like Global Warming, are very generous with their campaign contributions – when it comes to votes, their numbers come up short when election day rolls around. Right now, Barack Obama is between a rock and a hard place on the issue of what to do to lower gas prices in the United States. On one hand, Barack Obama may know what needs to be done to help solve Americas energy problems, but on the other – he needs environmentalist to continue to give his campaign money, especially after he made the decision to opt out of public financing.

There is no doubt in my mind that Barack Obama is a very smart man. That said, soon he must decide whether he will continue his ultra liberal position on issues like offshore oil drilling and take that position to defeat in November or will he moderate his position which will anger liberals and cut into his campaign contributions. Running for and winning the office of President of the United States is all about compromise. The last time either an extreme liberal or conservative was elected as President, we all saw what a mess that person, George W. Bush, did to the country in his eight years. My hope is that Barack Obama is not the liberal counterpart to President George W. Bush, because if there is one thing this country does not need right now it is another political ideologue that cares more about their own opinion than what is in the best interest of this country.

More than likely, Barack Obama wanted to wait until after this summers Democratic National Convention before he threw his big campaign green donors under the bus. However, with the issue of high gas prices facing Americans every single day – it has become imperative that Barack Obama break free from his ultra liberal base and move quickly toward the center. Just like when Bill Clinton successful ran for President, there was one issue that decided that race, the economy. In 2008 there will be one issue that will decide whether John McCain or Barack Obama is elected the next President and that issue is, reducing high gas prices. Maintaining a liberal environmentalist line when it comes to Alaskan and offshore oil drill is a definite loser for Barack Obama in November. Soon he will be forced to throw his environmentalist friends under the bus and get about the business of winning this election so we don't end up with John McCain at the end of the day.

Don Imus In Hot Water Again Over Racial Comment

I guess Don Imus just can't learn when it comes to what he can and cannot say on the radio, because recently he made another comment about an African-American man that has once again landed him in hot water with black leaders like Al Sharpton. You can listen to what Don Imus said, here, and judge for yourself if he once again crossed the line when it comes to insulting African-Americans. For a long time, I was a fan of Don Imus when he use to do his radio show on WFAN which was simulcasted on MSNBC television. Then Imus made his now famous remarks about the Rutgers Women's Basketball team which caused him to be fired by both WFAN and MSNBC. A few months later, WABC Radio and RFD cable television gave Don Imus another chance to redeem himself and after what seemed to be a heart felt apology for his previous comments he restarted his career on WABC Radio.

Now it appears that Don Imus has once again let his mouth get him in trouble. I listened to Don Imus' questionable comments tonight via the Internet and in my opinion if anyone else besides Don Imus would have said them, there would not be a problem from African-American activist like Al Sharpton. However, considering the tattered past of Don Imus, more that likely the words he used on his radio show recently will probably be the beginning of the end of his career. To me, there seems to be a self destructive streak that resides in the personality of Don Imus. How else can someone explain his actions? Imus seems to have an internal desire to continue to push the envelop, but he lacks the boundaries needed to make sure he does not go too far.

The fact that Don Imus is a recovering drug and alcohol abuser could help explain his need to self destruct his life. Anyone that has known someone that has recovered from an addition to drugs and/or alcohol understand too that there is something different in the personalities of people that allow themselves to become addicted to substances. That is the reason why I believe there is some kind of need that rests deep down inside of Don Imus to always try and cross the line. Even though Imus understood all to well that his career would end if he made another disparaging remark about African-Americans, still his need to push the envelope to the edge caused him to once again cross a line that he knew should not have been crossed. Right now I should feel sorry for the management of WABC Radio because they are going to be the ones that will be forced to pick up the pieces if this new story has legs. However, WABC management knew what they were getting when they hired Don Imus and now they will be forced to sleep in a bed that they chose to create.

When Don Imus was hired by WABC Radio, I thought they installed some kind of long delay system to prevent these types of comments from ever getting onto the airwaves. If that long delay before broadcast system was still in place, someone else besides Don Imus must also be to blame for allowing his words to not be bleeped out by the WABC Radio company censor. Mind you, I'm not trying to get someone else fired at WABC for a clear mistake that was made on Don Imus' part, but still one of the conditions that WABC placed on Imus' show when they agreed to give him another chance, was a long live to air radio delay system which was suppose to catch Don Imus' mistakes of the tongue before they were broadcast out to the world. Soon, a radio legend by the name of Don Imus could fade from public view forever and for the millions of fans that just can't get their day started without him, it is a shame that he was not thinking about you when, once again, he made a possible career ending mistake.

Pros/Cons Of Offshore Oil Drilling

Click Here To Discuss Offshore Oil Drilling.

Over the next few months, no one issue will be debated more in the halls of Congress and by the American people than offshore oil drilling in Florida and California. For 30 years, federal law has forbidden U.S. oil companies from drilling for crude oil in these locations, but last week – John McCain and then President Bush stated their desire to repeal the law the forbids offshore drilling in the United States. High gas prices are causing most Americans to rethink our green strategy when it comes to the search for and pumping of crude oil here in the United States. Of course, there are environmentalist that never want to see another oil drilling platform off the coast of this country and that is the reason there will be a huge debate about this issue all summer long.

There are many issues that make offshore oil drilling a political 'hot potato' for politicians in Washington. On the pro side of this debate, there is the unmistakable truth that the United States needs to produce more of our own crude oil, so we are not so dependent on foreign imports. However, the biggest pro of them all is that with gas prices heading ever closer to $5 per gallon, the U.S. economy is growing more sluggish every single day. All Americans realize that a poor preforming economy means that few raises and potential job layoffs could be just around the corner if high gas prices continue to put pressure on Americans biggest job creator, small businesses. Also, it just makes good sense that Americans not outsource our energy supply to nations that hate us in the first place. The only short term solution to this problem is to allow more oil exploration within the United States.

On the cons side of offshore oil drilling the issues revolve more around emotion than financial necessity. The biggest con I see to offshore oil drilling is that no one wants to be looking at an offshore oil rig when they go out to the beach on a sunny afternoon. In addition to the unsightly nature of looking out into the ocean and seeing an oil rig instead of clear blue water, there is a possibility that either through negligence or because of severe weather that an oil rig could start leaking crude oil into the ocean. As we have all seen after previous oil spills, the damage to nature is massive and also clean up efforts are never 100% complete when millions of barrels of crude oil first spill into the water and then eventually wash up on nearby beaches. The biggest con to offshore oil drilling is the potential of what a major oil spill would do the the ocean and to the surrounding beaches and wildlife that live there.

It is easy to see why environmentalist do not want to allow offshore oil drilling, but it is even easily for me to see why most Americans want it because of record high gas prices. While there are many other pros and cons to offshore oil drilling that I have not listed here, the decision on whether or not to drill offshore in the United States will come down to whether the Congress and President are more interested in the environment or will the severe economic issues of the day control their decision? I think most of us know who will lose this fight in the end. It will be the environmentalist and the 'green movement'. Over the history of this country, it has always been economic issues that have rule the day and with high gas prices putting a strain on average Americans – once again it will be the environmental/green movement that will be tossed aside in order to meet the short term energy needs of the United States. McCain's $300 Million Battery Idea

Just when almost everyone, including myself, thought that Senator John McCain was out of the the running for this years presidential race – now he has come with a crazy idea that might just help this country quickly develop an energy alternative to crude oil. Today, Senator McCain proposed that the U.S. government reward the person(s) that can develop a huge breakthrough in automobile battery longevity with a $300 million prize. Only last week, Senator McCain proposed a lifting of the offshore ban on drilling for crude oil in Florida and California and then today he is taking the next step, which has been needed so badly in this country and that is providing a real incentive for a person or group of people to prefect and extend automobile battery life.

The big question I have is, where is Senator Obama while McCain is thinking out of the box when it comes to solving this nations energy needs? He certainly is not offering up any new ideas of his own, short of the same old liberal nonsense that has been peddled by environmental extremist for decades. Right now, Senator McCain is proving that he is ready for this presidential campaign – but to date, Senator Obama is not. John McCain's energy ideas are right down the middle politically and that is where Barack Obama needs to be if he wants to become the next President. Within the course of one week, Senator McCain has proposed an idea that will allow for more crude oil discovery within the United States and now with his $300 million battery lottery idea, he is also looking toward the future energy needs of this country.

For some reason, Senator Obama is still stuck in his primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. While running toward the left in the democratic primary is the right thing to do, he must quickly shed many of his old time liberal ideology and get about the business of finding solutions to this nations problems in a moderate and compromising way. Right now, it appears that Senator Obama is trying to find himself while at the same time Senator McCain seems to have his war chest full of new ideas to fight the ever increasing price of gas. To say that I am shocked that John McCain seems to be the new ideas guy in this race, is a huge understatement. Like everyone else, I thought that it would be McCain that would stick with ideology throughout this presidential campaign, but to date it has been Obama that seems to be stuck in the politics of the past.

While Senator McCain's idea of offering someone a $300 million prize for helping to propel automobile battery technology to the next level will be criticized by some as nothing more than an energy gimmick - the amount of that prize, $300 million, is just the kind of incentive it will take to get Americas best minds to work on this most important issue. For far too long, young inventors have found their inventions being bought up by large oil companies and then shelfed because they could change the way Americans fuel their automobiles and homes. By putting a huge reward, $300 million, on the table – the U.S. government would assure that the next big idea in automobile battery technology would not be bought by some oil company just so it never saw the light of day in the free market. Even for rich oil companies, $300 million, is no small amount of money. Right now, John McCain understands that high gas prices are the only issue facing voters in this November's election. The next big question is when will Barack Obama discover that, as well?

George Carlin, 'Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television', Dead

I was saddened to hear the news that comedian George Carlin died yesterday at the age of 71. While some far right social conservatives consider Carlin as nothing more than a modern day anti-Christ, to millions of Americans he made us laugh when events in our lives left us little to laugh about. Thinking back, it has been years since I saw George Carlin appear on pay cable television shows where he was allowed to present his unique brand of comedy without being censored by the broadcast networks. In my opinion, George Carlin thrived on cable television especially on paid networks like HBO and Showtime. The initial power and influence of paid channels like HBO and Showtime have long since faded, but back during their glory days, it was entertainers like George Carlin that cause millions of people to send in a few extra bucks per month to their cable company just to be able to see George Carlin in the raw.

Now another American icon is dead and millions of Americans will grieve the passing of George Carlin. Like Carlin, I too am facing old age sooner rather than later, but back when I was in my mid 20's, George Carlin was the best comedian in the United States of America. All throughout this countries history, it has been comedians that have help us get through the day, when nothing but bad news is being thrown at us almost every single minute we are awake. Years ago, younger and more edgier comedians have taken George Carlin's place as comic relief to help get us all through our day. However, for many people like myself, we will consider George Carlin the 'gold standard' when it comes to judging young comic talent that is trying to find a marketplace in our lives.

Nothing made George Carlin stand out more with the American people than his comic routine where he talked about the 'seven words you can never say on television'. Of course, most of us heard him say all of those words on television, but for sure he was not being broadcast on free network television when he said them. In his own way, George Carlin made all of us think about censorship on the American airwaves and also to ask ourselves if that censorship was really in the best interest of this country. Now this comedian pioneer is dead, but George Carlin will not soon be forgotten by members of my generation. Like many other Americans alive today, I am a product of the 1970's and that decade is still a very important part of my life.

Tonight, another important voice that helped many up us come of age in the 1970's is dead. While there will be a few people that will try to ridicule George Carlin for the vile way he used his humor to make a point, to me – George Carlin will always be remembered as a man that used his unique brand of humor to make important points about what it really means to be an American. The 1970's were a very important part of the lives of millions of American that are alive today and those 70's feelings have not faded over the course of time. Even young people today look to the music of the 1970's to help them find their way in this ever changing world and hopefully George Carlin's death will help many of the '20 somethings' of today to better understand the history of this great nation and the battles that were fought long before they were born.
