Next Big Fight, Souter Replacement

So far - it has been clear that the GOP, while still able to fight the new Barack Obama administration, are quickly losing power in Washington. Now the biggest issue that conservatives care about, the US Supreme Court, is about to have a vacancy and during this next fight between liberals and conservatives will will see just how much if any clout the GOP still has in the Congress.

The decision of Supreme Court Justice David Souter to retire will create a good test for the new Barack Obama administration, but it is even a bigger test for the GOP. If many ways, if President Obama plays his cards right in the selection of a new Supreme Court Justice, he could drive the extreme conservatives that are still left in the Congress even further into the wilderness with most voters and I believe that is exactly what he is going to do.

Extremism from both the far left and right appears ugly to the vast majority of Americans who live their life as moderates. Nothing will expose the ugly side of extremism more so than a good old fashion Supreme Court nomination fight. Right now, the GOP has little power left in Washington because it moved too far to the right. However, a Supreme Court nomination fight will push the GOP even further to the right because it's grass roots base will demand it and that move could play well for the new Obama administration and Democrats in Congress.
