Karl Malden Big Fan

Karl Malden Big FanKarl Malden died today. He was 97 years old. In my youth, Malden was one of the biggest stars in movies and on television. I still remember Karl Malen's part in one of my favorite movies of all time called "Patton" which was released back when I was in grade school. In "Patton" Malden played the role of General Omar Bradley and to this day I still remember how his part in that movie was in direct contrast to the primary character - General George Patton. In some ways, it seems like just the other day when Karl Malden played Gen. Bradley in that movie, but in reality that movie was made decades ago.

Later, Karl Malden made a successful jump from movies to television - when he was joined by Michael Douglas on a television show called, "The Streets of San Francisco". As a young boy, I remember mom and dad watching that show every week. While Malden was the definate leading man in the TV show "The Streets of San Francisco", his partner on that show, Michael Douglas, later went on to become one of the biggest leading men in movies for several decades. Tonight, I watched some old clips of Karl Malden and Michael Douglas on YouTube and it was amazing to me how young Michael Douglas appeared back when that show was on the air.

The past two weeks have been filled with many famous deaths. In addition to Karl Malden's death today - Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Billy Mays all died since late last week. One of the most popular posts on my blog during that period of time has been one where I talked about how some people believe that celebrities always die in three. People have been talking about famous people dying in threes ever since I was a young boy and millions of people still believe celebrities still do die in groups of three. Frankly, so many celebrities have died in the past month - it is difficult for me to keep up with which group of threes we are now on after it was announced that Karl Malden died today.

For millions of people, Karl Malden's great work in movies like "Patton" and on television shows like "The Streets of San Francisco are not what they remember him most for. Instead, for years - Karl Malden was the TV spokesperson for American Express Travelers Cheques. To this day, I can still remember one of his famous tag lines from those commercials that always ended with the statement - "what will you do, what will you do". While I am sad that Karl Malden has passed away, no one could suggest that he did not live a long and successful life. Over his career, Malden seemed to always be willing to take a back seat in a movie or television show - but in the end we all really knew who the star of the show really was.

Americans Getting Really Fat?

When a recent study said that Americans are continuing to get fatter, I was not surprised in the least. Most of the people I know, including myself, are over weight (fat) and no matter how hard we try to lose weight - failure usually shows up down the road. Of course, the government and some special interest groups are quick to blame fast food for this American's getting fatter situation - but the point they are missing is that fast food has been around for decades now and only in the past ten or fifteen years have people started getting morbidly obese in great numbers.

I have an opinion about this issue, which you may or may not agree with. I believe one of the biggest reason's why Americans continue to get fatter is two fold. First, we do not get as much exercise as we use to and second - I believe our food is missing many of the key vitamins and minerals we need to survive, so many people continue to over eat to try and replace those vital vitamins and mineral in their bodies. The human brain knows the exact amount of vitamins and minerals our bodies need each day to maintain good health and survive, but it might be taking more food to reach those necessary levels as crops are grown in soil that is depleted of the minerals we all need to thrive.

Everyone knows that most Americans do not get as much exercise as our ancestors. In fact, few Americans want to go back to the days when people worked from daylight till dark just to earn a living for their families. However, for generations our bodies were trained and then DNA was created to cause our body's calorie consumption to be at a certain level based of how much hard labor was done by people each day. Americans are getting fatter because few people earn their living through hard work anymore and while computers are one of the best things to ever be invented - they and their side product game devices have caused kids and adults alike to enjoy entertainment without breaking a sweat.

While a lack of exercise is a leading cause of why Americans are getting fatter, I believe that the U.S. government needs to do more inspections of crop land both in the United States and in other countries around the world that import food to this country. One of the most important minerals needed by the human body is potassium and my guess is that the land our food supply is being grown in is grossly deficient in potassium content, which means our food supply is missing one of the most important minerals (potassium) needed for a healthy life. Then when you add to that problem - major human protein sources in the United States like beef, chicken and pigs are feed food from that same potassium depleted farm land - it's no wonder that Americans are fat and getting fatter by the day.
