Are Conservative Republicans - Self-Destructing?

This thought has crossed my mind the past year as more and more Republicans are making decision that don't seem to fit the mold of traditional Republican thinking. I'm a life long member of the Republican party and I'm concerned that our leaders have lost their way. I joined the party when Ronald Reagan first ran for president against Gerald Ford. Reagan didn't win, but I did keep supporting him the next four years and he was finally successful when he ran against Jimmy Carter. Just look at the Ronald Reagan legacy and compare that to the Republican party today.

Reagan believed in:
  • Smaller Government - I don't see many Republican leaders doing that anymore.
  • No Nation Building - Just look at what we are doing in Iraq.
  • Lower Taxes - They got that one right, thank goodness.
  • Keeping Government Out of Our Lives - Look at what they did to Terri Schiavo.
  • Lowering the Budget Deficit - This one is almost laughable.
The Republican talking heads on both radio and television will say that our leaders are doing a good job. They always do, they are like a broken record. However, many of the rank and file out here don't agree. Just look at the latest polls and anyone can see that our party is in trouble. The only group in D.C. that has lower job satisfaction ratings than President Bush, is the Republican control Congress.

However, there is good news. The Democratic party is more messed up than we are. They are completely self-destructive and wouldn't know what to do with a good opportunity if it hit them in the face. As Republicans we should worry that out of nowhere a moderate Democrat might appear and give hope to the country. If that happens, I'm afraid we will lose.
