Cause Of Madness - What Are The Trigger Points?

I have often wondered what causes a person to slip from the mentally sane and into the arms of total madness. Here is Central Texas fifteen years ago a man decided to run his truck into a Luby’s Cafeteria and randomly go from table to table executing people who were eating lunch. I remember where I was and what I was doing that day when I first heard the news of this tragedy. Since that time so many other bad things have happened around the world which were caused by an individual losing self control and committing mass murder. Of course, long time readers of this blog know that my personal opinion about these matters is that something genetically is wrong with most of these people and when a certain stress trigger point is reach they break and quickly go from normal behavior to complete madness.

Unfortunately, we all live in a world where too many people are living on the edge of madness and no one really knows what sets off these types of folks. Since the Luby’s Cafeteria incident fifteen years ago we have heard terrible stories of mothers drowning their baby’s in the bath tub, children killing their parents and other siblings in their own home, a woman who drown her own two children because she desired another relationship and who could forget 911 when madness went completely out of control in a man named Osama Bin Laden. The first time I ever really saw and understood the madness which was present is some people was when Jim Jones was able to get his followers to “drink the Kool Aid” upon his request. I was just a kid at the time, but those pictures of dozens of people laying dead in a field is something I will never forget.

Now this madness continues to get worse as people enter the classrooms of school children and gun down innocent kids who have never done anything to hurt the perpetrators. I have long since quit saying that these types of event can get much worse because they always do seem to get worse and the senselessness of these killings seems to keep progressing more and more to the dark side. I have said before and I will say again that there should be a law that when someone goes mad and commits terrible mass murder that their brains should be removed and studied by researchers in the field of understanding criminal madness in people. How are we ever going to find out what makes these folks tick, if we don’t take this step and research what is different about the brains of killers who go mad and start killing innocent people?

Part of the problem is the criminal justice system, which is based on an adversarial system of justice. While everyone deserves a fair trial, the truth is that some of these sicko’s don’t have a real defense, so their attorney’s start looking elsewhere for a way to defend their clients. I call this the “abuse excuse” defense, which has gotten completely out of control in recent years. We should all be demanding that government leaders invest money and pass laws so all of us can figure out how and why some people go mad and start killing people at random. The answer to this question will not be found in the criminal justice system, but by smart research scientist who will eventually find a common denominator in the brains of folks who have gone mad and committed these terrible acts of cruelty.
