Fred Thompson's Wife Jeri - Plus or Minus?

While talking with my 68 year young mother on the telephone last weekend, she brought up politics. My mother leans very democratic in her views and while we were talking she was saying something about Fred Thompson that she didn't like and then mom said, but you know he does have a pretty daughter. The daughter mom thought she was talking about was not Fred Thompson's daughter at all, but his wife. Once I explained that the beautiful blond at Fred Thompson's side was his wife and not his daughter, mom went off on a tirade about Thompson's choice of a wife.

I don't see a problem with Fred Thompson marrying a beautiful woman that is decades younger than he is. However, my views of old men marrying younger women might be more liberal than most folks in the country as a whole, especially older women in both the GOP and Democratic Party's. Many older women look upon young pretty women, like Jeri Thompson, as either "gold diggers" or "home wreckers" and nothing is going to change that deep feeling in there hearts. While I don't agree that Jeri Thompson is either a "home wrecker" or "gold digger" there will be hundreds of thousands of people that will think exactly that.

With Fred Thompson set to make his presidential plans official on September 6th or 7th, there will be an interesting campaign ahead for the GOP nomination. Will Jeri Thompson be a major issue in Fred's upcoming campaign, of course she will because there are people that always judge a marriage as a team situation rather than just an individual choice of the person that is actually running for election. I believe this younger wife issue will hurt Fred Thompson, but that fact will be mitigated somewhat because Rudy Giuliani has even a worst example of married life than Thompson which really leaves the social conservatives in the Republican Party looking at a very tough election year, indeed.

Fred Thompson To Announce September 6th - Leno

Some well placed political sources are claiming that former Tennessee Senator and actor Fred Thompson will announce that he is running for the GOP nomination for President soon and they claim he will make that announcement official on the Jay Leno show on September 6th. It has been pretty clear to most people that Fred Thompson was going to seek the GOP nomination and while Labor Day has been the historical time most presidential candidates make there announcements, the 2008 presidential cycle is turning out to be anything but normal.

With many large states moving up there primary dates to January, February or March - I believe both parties will have nominees selected nine (9) months before voters do there duty in November of next year. Could Fred Thompson have waited too long to enter the 2008 election primary? The next few months will answer that question and I for one will be interested to see if a well known late comer to a race for the President of the United States can actually win the nomination on a state by state basis. If anyone could enter a race late and win it, Fred Thompson is that guy.

Millions of people already know Fred Thompson from his acting work in Hollywood. Now Senator Thompson is going to try and repeat the political success of Ronald Reagan as, once again, a real conservative will try and win over moderates and conservative democrats to the GOP. I have my reservations as to exactly how strong Fred Thompson will actually be when primary voters go to the polls and start casting there votes. The world of presidential primaries has always been a strange thing to watch because some of the time the person leading before the first primary usually loses and someone from the middle of the pack gets noticed and becomes the front runner almost overnight.

Will Senator Craig Survive The Weekend?

From local newspapers in Idaho, to fellow Republican Senators and Members of the House of Representatives, no one is coming to the defense of Senator Larry Craig in his darkest hour in Washington. I believe it was Richard Nixon that said, "if you want a friend in Washington D.C., then buy a dog". While I disagree with almost everything former President Richard Nixon said and stood for, that statement is so correct and Senator Larry Craig is finding out about the truth of that half hearted joke tonight.

I don't see how Senator Larry Craig is going to survive the long Labor Day weekend without announcing his resignation from the U.S. Senate. Even people that personally like Senator Craig are repulsed by his actions and no one wants to stand behind this man that would not even stand up for himself when charges he says now were police entrapment were brought against him in June. The hardest thing for most people that have engaged in bad behavior in the past to do when caught is to admit that they did something bad in the first place. Right now, Senator Larry Craig is living in a deep sense of denial that will shortly come crashing down on his career and family.

The worst part of this Senator Larry Craig story is that he has fought against guy rights for years. When politicians go on television and present a "holier than thou" message when their own house is not in order, it angers almost everyone in the nation. Most people in this world struggle to keep there families together and they make hard choices every single day when temptation comes their way. The sad fact is that Senator Craig cannot control the temptations that come into his brain and for the rest of his life he will be untrustworthy not only to the voters of Idaho, but more importantly to his wife and family that never suspected that he had such a dark side to his heart.

Senator Larry Craig - I'm Not Gay

Today, airport officials released an audio tape of their interview with Senator Larry Craig after he was arrested for lewd behavior in the Minneapolis airport mens room back in June. From the bits and pieces I heard of that interview on the radio today, it pretty much seems that it was the airport police officers word against Senator Larry Craig on what actually happened and if Senator Craig had not of made the choice to plead guilty to a lessor charge, he most likely would not have been convicted of anything illegal that day.

While I personally believe that Senator Craig was up to no good in that bathroom that day, that belief in my gut and someone convincing me to find a man guilty in a court of law are two completely different things. To my knowledge there was no sexual contact whatsoever between Senator Craig and the undercover police officer and while I find the very idea of such acts being perpetrated in airport rest rooms totally disgusting, I really don't see from a legal point of view where an actual crime was committed. How is what Senator Craig did that much different than what a man or woman would do when coming on to someone they are attracted to in a bar or other public place?

My thinking is that the arrest of Senator Larry Craig was premature on the police officers part and if Senator Craig was really innocent he would not have stood for this type of police entrapment and would have plead "not guilty" and made it his mission in life to destroy the Minneapolis Airport Police department for there bad conduct in that rest room that day. There are other examples of potential bad conduct by Senator Larry Craig in the past and my belief is that people that engage in this type of sick behavior have probably done so before and not gotten caught. We all need to think long and hard about what actually happened in that mens room last June and separate our gut feelings of disgust from what actual crime was committed.

Utube Senator Larry Craig Jokes/Videos

It didn't take long for thousands of people to start producing Utube video's about the lewd charges against Senator Larry Craig of Idaho in a Minneapolis bathroom in June (Click here and here for examples). Millions of people, like me, love to visit Utube to find unknown comedians practicing there craft live and in real time, daily. Too many times, professional comedians like Jay Leno and David Letterman are forced to restrict their comments in order to please network censors and/or meet the latest network policy on political correctness. Utube is filled with great video's made by regular everyday folks giving their take, via humor, on the whole Senator Larry Craig story.

If ever there was an example of how the mainstream media has lost touch with there audience, the tremendous growth of Utube is the perfect example. Millions of people each day search Utube for comic relief after a long hard day at work. The Senator Larry Craig story was perfect for Utube users and with a long holiday weekend coming up for most people in the United States, I predict that several of these creative Senator Larry Craig Utube clips will surpass one (1) million downloads before the start of next week.

As an older guy, I never thought that I would find Utube an interesting experience, but I was oh so wrong in that thinking. Utbue is fun and in many ways it will lead news organizations into the future because right now Utube is not being controlled by the PC police and everyone is free to watch video's about what they are really interested in seeing. Every time something strange comes up in the news, like the Senator Larry Craig arrest, thousands of people around the world will post new Utube video's within hours of the story breaking and millions more people will enjoy these video's without the ever present PC police and network censors standing around to edit free speech.

Senator Larry Craig's Mug Shot Everywhere

As I was reading the latest news tonight on the Internet I noticed that almost all major news sources were showing the mug shot of Senator Larry Craig on there website. What is this fascination with getting a persons mud shot either on a website or on television when the person is famous? I guess there is a certain segment of the population that loves to see famous figures being brought to justice and nothing will prove that fact to them more than a police mug shot of Senator Larry Craig or some other politician or celebrity that gets into trouble with the law.

I still remember seeing the mug shots of other famous people like Michael Jackson, Nick Nolte and Paris Hilton broadcast to billions of people around the world via the Internet and television programs. While the mug shots of Michael Jackson and Nick Nolte were funny and the butt of many of jokes by late night comedians like Jay Leno and David Letterman, publishing a mug shot of Senator Larry Craig isn't as interesting to me and I'll bet many other people feel the same way, as well. In Senator Craig's mug shot he looks like any other professional business man that we might meet at an airport on any given day.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like mainstream news organizations report the news from some kind of pre fabricated template where the mug shot of folks like Senator Craig are just another part of the story. I would guess that I saw Senator Craig's mug shot on at least 20 different web sites tonight and to be honest I do not see how that mug shot does anything to further the story about Larry Craig's alleged poor choices in a Minnesota airport a few months ago.

Senator Larry Craig Thrown Under The Bus

It took less than 24 hours for some fellow U.S. Senators and Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to throw Senator Larry Craig under the bus and ask him to resign from the Senate. One thing that is true in Washington D.C. more than any other place is that today's friends will turn on you in a minute if you get into trouble. If Senator Craig is guilty of the charges of "lewd conduct" in a Minneapolis airport rest room, then he should resign from the Senate so a person with better morals can take his place. However, Senator Craig continues to maintain his innocents even though he did plead guilty to a lessor charge that did not include "lewd behavior".

Personally I think Senator Larry Craig is not telling the truth about how his actions in that mens restroom were totally taken out of context. However, I was not there and I am not a personal witness to what actually did go on and what did not. I have heard stories for years about certain rest rooms to stay away from when traveling down Interstate Highways because these rest rooms are known to be homosexual hangouts where people that want to have sex with a stranger are free to come and go. While I don't have problems with homosexuals, I do have problems with anyone deciding to have sex with strangers in a public restroom.

One thing Senator Larry Craig has done is to call attention to a mostly hidden problem in public restrooms across the country. Why, in this day and age of sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS, would anyone desire to meet up with a total stranger in a public restroom for the purpose of having sex? I guess there are certain desires in some people that cannot be suppressed to the point of being able to back away from activity that could not only ruin their career and family life, but could also end up infecting them with a life threatening disease all for the sake of a short term thrill.

Senator Larry Craig's Morality Questions Arise

Republican Senator Larry Craig from Idaho was arrested earlier this year after an undercover police officer at the Minneapolis airport said that Senator Craig tried to engage in "lewd behavior" with him. Senator Craig plead guilty to a lessor charge and was released without spending any time in jail. While the alleged actions of Senator Craig are disgusting the greater thinking of some folks, like me, is why do we put our political leaders on such a high pedestal in the first place?

The major problem most people, I have spoken with, have about Larry Craig is that he is a hypocrite. While Senator Craig was talking a good game for the folks back home who are mainly against homosexual marriage and conduct in general, he was doing something else entirely in his personal life when he thought no one else was looking. Senator Craig said yesterday that he is innocent of all of these charges and just plead guilty in the hope that everything would go away much quicker that way. Also, Senator Craig believes he is a target of a bunch of gay activist that want to bring him down because he does not support there cause for guy marriage in the United States.

Who knows what will happen with the rest of Senator Larry Craig's political future, but in the end voters in Idaho need to ask themselves if they should put future politicians into office and immediately place moral standard on them that most people will fail at maintaining. The tremendous power that the social conservative movement has in the Republican Party is partially to blame for the hypocritical stands that some politicians are forced to follow in order to get their votes. All people should strive to live the perfect moral life, but in reality we have all fallen short, on occasion, because human beings are not perfect.

Murder Rate Rises - Unimproved New Orleans

Another person is murdered almost everyday in New Orleans, making the murder rate one of the worst in the country. After Hurricane Katrina, almost half the cities previous population moved away and some will never return to New Orleans again to live. What is happening in New Orleans is just another sad chapter of what has already happened in other cities with declining populations. Many times the law abiding citizens leave a dying city for new jobs and opportunities elsewhere. The folks left behind were probably the trouble makers and criminals that always lived there, but now with a smaller population the crime rate continues to grow, in percentage terms, until it reaches critical mass.

Even without the hundreds of thousands of people who were relocated after Hurricane Katrina, the violent crime rate in New Orleans was high. Most outsiders only envision events like Mardi Gras when the City of New Orleans was brought up, but people who called this city home knew a different New Orleans that was not all about fun and games, but a place were many neighborhoods were not safe from criminals or corrupt police officers. Many of these good citizens that lived in fear because of previous problems in New Orleans decided to never return once a chance to leave presented itself after Hurricane Katrina.

Thousands of people from New Orleans were relocated to other cities like Houston and from what I have read in the local Houston news media, most evacuees that are currently living there have no intention of returning to New Orleans to live. The blame game is going full speed right now as sorry politicians on both sides of the political debate are blaming the other side for the crime problems in New Orleans. In my view, they are giving themselves too much credit and power over current events in New Orleans. The truth is that many of the good law abiding citizens of New Orleans have left which only leaves a large group of thugs and criminals to fight with, steal from and murder each other daily.

Katie Couric Dangerous Trip - Iraq Syria

Are the ratings so bad for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric that the network is now ready to risk Katie Couric's life in order to improve that networks faltering ratings? It was announced today that Katie Couric will travel to Iraq and Syria over the next few weeks and in addition to anchoring the CBS Evening News from those locations, she will travel into the field of battle to do research and interviews for each day's broadcast. I jokingly told my wife tonight that CBS must be trying to kill Katie Couric because of bad ratings, in the same way network executives killed the guy in the 1970's movie, "Network", when the CEO of that fictitious network would not fire the guy.

To me, it is just plain stupid to send a high profile person, like Katie Couric, into a war zone where it is difficult to tell the difference between friend and foe. Yes, the ratings are bad on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric but risking her life and the producers and camera folks that will go along for the ride is not the right way to cover the War in Iraq. A high profile person like Katie Couric would be just the right kind of target that insurgents and foreign terrorist in Iraq would love to capture or kill to further their cause. Even in Great Britain, common sense finally won out over patriotism when Prince Harry was not sent to Iraq with the rest of his army unit a few months ago.

The U.S. military has urged CBS News to keep the travel plans of Katie Couric secret as she moves around the various war zones in Iraq because they are in fear for her personal safety. While it is important to cover important stories around the world, it is crazy to try and send high profile network anchors into harms way because their presents is not necessary to inform the American people about what is going on half a world away. The only real reason CBS News is sending Katie Couric to Iraq is to improve that networks ratings and now real life television is falling to a new level of money over safety and that really is a disgrace on an already disgraced U.S. television network called, CBS.

Paul Potts Discovers - Opera World Critical

As "Britain's Got Talent" winner Paul Potts is now discovering, the world of Opera music is a very closed off place for most people in the world. There is a certain talent and pecking order to the whole Opera business and Paul Potts is the first person to enter this world via the hype of a reality television show. Most people on the planet listen to music formats like rock, pop, hip hop and country and fans of those music formats are very welcoming of new talent that needs to preform live to hone their skills and become better.

The world of Opera is a whole different ballgame where giants of the Opera world have worked years just to be billed in a live performance by some of the most up tight people on the Earth. Paul Potts does not look like or sound like most of the current talent making up the world of Opera and some very hateful comments are starting to leak out from this closed off music format from old timers who are suggesting that Paul Potts is not going to be welcome in there click. To that I say the heck with you!

Old timers are never willing or able to change with the times, even if those changes will bolster their overall goals in the long run. Paul Potts' introduced Opera music to millions of people around the world that would have never entered an Opera House in their entire lifetime. There is something very personal about Opera Music and even if Paul Potts' does not sing up to the standards of some of the greats, he is still helping Opera break out of it's closed off world of "better than thou" type of people and he is opening up this music format to millions of regular folks that might not have money, but who are just as effected by the emotion experience of Opera as pompous folks that think regular folks should be left out of this type of emotional experience all together because they are not rich or smart enough to appreciate good music.

Owen Wilson Requests Privacy - Suicide Attempt

I was saddened to read a few days ago that actor Owen Wilson was being treated at a California hospital for an alleged suicide attempt. This morning I was reading some comments on a forum about Owen Wilson where a few people commented about their surprise that he could be depressed because he has earned a bunch of money acting in movies. Unfortunately, money and happiness do not go together yet many people still think that all of there problems will somehow disappear if they had enough money.

My favorite movie that Owen Wilson has starred in so far is the first "Meet the Parents" movie. He played his character so well as he drove his ex-finance's new boy friend completely mad with his wealth, smooth demeanor and untimely appearances when the two were together. Another good Owen Wilson movie was "Behind Enemy Lines" where he played a young Navy officer who was shot down while filming mass graves in, I believe, Bosnia during the U.S. war there and was left to languish for days on the ground, by himself, before his commanding officer finally went against his superiors and went in to rescue him from certain capture and death.

In a statement, Owen Wilson has requested privacy and that is exactly what he needs as he battles the disease of depression. Millions of people have suffered from depression over the years, but unfortunately many of these folks never reach out for help because they don't want to be stigmatized by friends and family. There are good medicines that can help a depressed mind, but if the person does not admit they are suffering from depression, most never get the long term treatment that they need. Hopefully, Owen Wilson will be able to take that first step of admitting that he is depressed, get the help he needs and also be able to get back to acting because he is a very talented man on the silver screen.

Yahoo Email Adds Text Message Feature

In a capitalist society, like the United States, nothing helps the consumer more than competition. There are several big free email providers in the world and one of them is Yahoo who has millions of customers that use there free email service every day. Today, Yahoo announced that there email service will soon support sending text messages to cell phones directly from there online browser based email sending platform which is a huge step forward for Yahoo. I can see how having this type of addition to regular email will be a big benefit for parents who are less likely to type text messages on a cell phone to their children than they would be to sit down at the family computer, on a regular sized keyboard.

This is such a good idea that most likely Google and MSN will offer a similar service in the days and weeks to come. The big three Internet Search Engines are always looking for new ways to attract customers to there portals and email has always been a proven way of get millions of people to visit their web sites several times per day. The revenue potential of email is also growing since Google started showing advertisements along side email messages on their Gmail service when it was launched several years ago. Microsoft's email service, Hotmail, has been around for a long time and millions of consumers maintain a Hotmail account even if they don't use that account as much as they use to.

Look for Yahoo to get a bunch of free publicity the next few days with this new email feature because for the first time, in a long time, Yahoo has beaten search engine leader Google to a new online feature that people will really enjoy using. Personally I enjoy using mostly Google products, but I also understand the need for real competition and in recent years Google has been so dominate that I was afraid they would eventually drive the other major search portals out of business. This new text message feature being added by Yahoo is a good first step in keeping Yahoo competitive in an ever increasing Google dominated Internet.

New H5N1 Bird Flu Fears - Germany

German government health officials discovered Bird Flu in some geese late last week and over the weekend they killed over 160,000 geese that were suspected of carrying the disease. While I don't follow the issue of Bird Flu on a daily basis, it does catch my attention when a country like Germany takes the unusual step of killing that many birds in such a short period of time. H5N1 bird-flu virus was discovered in five (5) of the geese tested so the government decided to take drastic action in order to protect the public from a possible Bird Flu pandemic.

For the past several years, various governments around the world have been concerned about what might happen if Bird Flu mutated and became easily passed from birds to humans. There are major cases of worldwide pandemics in history and all of these events have lead to the deaths of millions of people around the world. With the potential loss of life in the millions, no government is going to take a big risk when H5N1 Bird Flu is confirmed in the population of birds within their country. In the next few weeks we will find out more from what scientist are currently learning from testing these infected geese.

Just because the United States news media chooses not to cover the real life threat of bird to human bird flu contamination does not mean that we as a country are immune from facing the same challenges as Germany. In my opinion it is just a matter of time before the United States is faced with the same hard choices as Germany and when that time comes I hope the government will have the will to do the right thing and protect our citizens from potential harm. My hope is that Bird Flu will turn out not to be the huge problem that many people believe it could be and in a few decades hopefully people will look back on this Bird Flu scare in the same way people of my generation look back to the terror that was experiences years ago when Swine Flu was the latest pandemic threat of the day to people living in the 1970's.

Florida Fights DNC For Early Election

Since the presidential election of 2000 when Al Gore and George W. Bush were locked in an almost tie for Florida's electoral votes, that state has looked dysfunctional to most of the country when it comes to accurately counting votes casted by it's citizens on election day. Now Florida Democrats find themselves not in a legal battle with George W. Bush or the Republican Party, but in true classic style Florida Democrats are fighting there own party over when they hold their primary for President of the United States.

The Democratic Party rules are clear as to which states come first in presidential primaries, but Florida is now trying to make there own rules and move to the top of the list whether the Democratic Party approves or not. Florida Democrats are trying to blame this whole mess on Republicans in Florida because the GOP lead legislature passed a law mandating January 29, 2008 as the date the citizens of Florida should cast their votes in the 2008 presidential primary. Now Florida democrats are caught between a state law that sets the date for the primary and there own national party that is threatening not to seat their delegates at the party's national convention if they don't change the date of the Florida democratic primary election.

New election problems in Florida are another black eye on this state they seems to always have a problem with counting votes on election day. In this modern world we live in, it should be an easy process to count the number of votes cast for each candidate and declare a winner within a matter of minutes after the polls close. However, there are party partisans that really don't care which candidates gets the most votes and these activist will muddy the water as much as they can in order to help their candidate win, even if he or she does not receive the majority of votes. It will be interesting to watch the events in Florida play out over the next few days and the good news is that no one has cast any votes yet, so right now the decisions made in Florida will not effect the will of the people come election day 2008.

Are We In Iraq To Win or Lose?

As the months go by, I hear an every increasing drum beat from Democrats and some Republicans that basically says that the "War in Iraq" is lost and the best thing the country can do is turn tail and run for home. A couple of years ago I would count myself in that number of people that thought the United States had made a huge mistake in going to war with Iraq in the first place and the best thing we could do is pull our troops out and let the various religious factions fight it out, in Iraq, until they are tired of killing each other.

Then the General Petraeus Plan was announced after last November's elections and I thought at the time it was just another Bush administration trick to bolster public support for awhile longer to keep U.S. troops in Iraq, but I never really thought that the Petraeus plan would actually have a chance of working. Fast forward a few months and almost everything on the ground in Iraq has changed for the better and it looks like General David Petraeus might have just found a way for the United States to win in Iraq. It is important for the U.S. to win in Iraq and most Americans understand that fact very well.

As I am writing this post there are over 20 people running for President of the United States and it seems like most of them are trying to appeal to there base supporters in order to win their party's nomination for president. When the United States is at war against extremist terrorist that want to destroy our very way of life, it is sad that some politicians seem to be on the side of the terrorist and not the citizens of there country. There is no way a quick and speedy withdrawal of troops from Iraq will benefit either the Iraqi or American people, but that seems to be the course of action many presidential candidates are following right now.

Maybe it was a mistake to go to war with Iraq, but even if it was we owe it to the Iraqi people and the American people to finish the job we started or future generation will see the error of our ways and blame us for making the world a less safe place to live in the future.

Wade Phillips Right Coach For Cowboys'?

I watched a little bit of the Dallas Cowboys/Houston Texans game tonight, but I have found it hard to watch pre-season games in recent years because what these games are all about is playing new players which will help the coaching staff try and figure out how much dept they have on their team. The huge question surrounding the Dallas Cowboys' is how good of a coach is Wade Phillips and will he be able to be his own man in an NFL organization known for it's owner sticking his nose into almost every major decision that is made surrounding the team.

The first negative thing that comes to my mind in the hiring of Wade Phillips by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was that Jones went to Wal-Mart to find a coach instead of seeking out the best qualified man for the job. Jerry Jones made it clear that he was not going to step up and pay a good coach the kind of money he would expect to take the job in the first place. So here comes Wade Phillips who made statements early on praising the skills of Jerry Jones and my gut just started to hurt because Cowboys fans have already seen that kind of coach before in the Cowboys organization.

Now that Wade Phillips has a couple of games under his belt as the Dallas Cowboys' head coach, I might have to rethink my original opinion about his selection. It is becoming more clear to me everyday that Wade Phillips' is a very intelligent man that has good coaching abilities. However, my mind still keeps going back to the string of good coaches that Jerry Jones has somehow found a way to run off over the years by his constant micromanagement of daily coaching duties. Like all Dallas Cowboys' fans I always hope for the best, but at the same time I have long memories of other coaches that were hired to take the "boys" all the way and all have fallen short since the days of Jimmy Johnson.

Lindsay Lohan - West Is Still Wild

I remember when I was growing up back in the 1960's watching old westerns on television talking about how dangerous it was for settlers in the "old wild west". In many ways the western part of the United States has changed, but when it comes to obeying the law and legal consequences for illegal behavior little has changed in the west. Just look at how Lindsay Lohan was treated after her drunk driving conviction where she was sentenced to one (1) day in jail.

In many ways, the old saying that "anything goes in Hollywood" is still true because there seems to be little chance a person will go to jail for very long unless they kill someone. However, even when murder is charged and proven sometimes juries still refuse to require justice for criminal behavior. I believe there is a totally different mind set for people that live in California than in the rest of the United States. It is relatively safe for someone like Lindsay Lohan to drive drunk (DUI) and not be required to pay a severe price for that criminal conduct.

I personally feel bad for Lindsay Lohan because I believe the court system has let her down because of there lenient treatment. The only way young people mature is by experiencing problems and then being forced to find ways to solve those problems and also to face penalties when they break the rules. It's clear to me that Lindsay Lohan's mother and father did not have very many family rules when she was growing up and now this pretty young woman is paying the price for basically having to raise herself. Young women, in Hollywood, with self destructive behavior are becoming the norm and that fact should scare everyone.

Warner Slaps General Petraeus Before Report

What in the world has happened to the once great friend of the U.S. military, Senator John Warner of Virginia? Last week, I heard Senator Warner on the radio asking President Bush to remove at least five (5) thousand troops from Iraq before Christmas. I heard Senator Warner's comments while driving my car and I almost had a wreck when I heard those words come out of his mouth. From all outward appearances, General David Petraeus is preparing to give a very positive and upbeat report about the Iraqi troop surge next month, so why is Senator John Warner trying to undermine the success of General Petraeus?

The only thing I can think of is that Senator John Warner has been a U.S. Senator for too long and he is suffering from the same disease other regular folks suffer from when they live inside the beltway for too long. That disease seems to turn regular moderate to conservative Americans into liberal leaning and thinking politicians. I think John Warner is starting to believe the political propaganda being spread by Harry Reid that the War in Iraq is already lost which in turn means that Senator Warner will not listen to what General Petraeus says in the middle of next month about the success or failure of the Iraq Troop Surge.

I remember years ago listening to Senator John Warner on Sunday morning debate shows like "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation". Back then I was always impressed with his knowledge of world events and his never wavering support of the U.S. military. Now I don't know what to think about Senator Warner because he seems to be saying that he wants five (5) thousand troops returned home by Christmas not because their work is finished and they are no longer needed, but instead as some kind of election year publicity stunt to curry favorite with some of his liberal buddies in the U.S. Senate. It might be time for Senator John Warner to retire and not seek reelection because from where I sit he seems to be turning into the same kind of politician as his fellow liberal Senate buddies who have lost touch with the American people.

Petraeus Report Being Twisted Before Release

There are some politicians in Washington that are hoping for a negative success report from General David Petraeus next month. Yes, there are some politicians that are betting against the home team in order to score political points with a few crazy nuts that believe all war is bad. While I don't consider myself a crazy anti-war nut case, there have been times over the past few years when I have doubted the wisdom of the Iraq War and the motivations of President Bush for getting us into that war in the first place.

That said, the decision to go to war in Iraq was made by our elected President and supported by both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Now that the nation decided to go to war in Iraq, it would not only be wrong to just leave when things are not going our way, more importantly it would show that the United States can not stay in a fight till the finish. To me, General Petraeus seems to be an honest man with extraordinary intelligence. When he releases his report in a few weeks I hope to be able to read the full report on the Internet to find out what he is actually saying before the politicians start picking and choosing different paragraphs out of his report just to support there point of view.

I have been concerned in recent weeks as some Republicans and most Democrats seem to prefer a speedy U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq only because of their concerns about how current troop levels will effect their chances in the 2008 elections. War is a very serious thing for a nation to decide to do and while many people had reservations as to the wisdom of the decision to go to War in Iraq in the first place. The decision was made the right way and it would be wrong to just go home because ones opponent beat them up badly in the first half of the game. The United States would find it easy to win most conflicts early because of the amount of money we spend on the defense of our country. However, so far we have not past the test of endurance in the aftermath of war since the days and years after World War II.

Petraeus Surge Plan Working - Democrats Worry

If Republican's were not so stupid and greedy, they would have wiped out most liberal democrats in statewide and national elections by now. Just as General Petraeus is about to give his mandatory three (3) month progress report on the success or failure of the Iraq Troop Surge, some democratic leaders are bitting their nails with worry that the Petreaus plan might actually be working.

Even before General Petraeus had a chance to get all of his men in place as he built up troop strength around Iraq, some democratic legislators were already calling his plan a failure and even one democratic leader, Harry Reid, pronounced the War in Iraq lost. I believe most Americans are now against the War in Iraq because for the past two or three years things have not been going well on the ground and no one wants to get up in the morning and hear about another car bomb going off that killed hundreds of civilians and soldiers.

We Americans have a difficult time remembering bad events that happen to us. I believe the reason that happens to us is because most people in America are religious and the bible teaches us that we should forgive our enemies. While that attitude is a healthy one sent directly from God, the bible also says that there will always be war and rumors of war here on Earth. If the American people really understood the hatred that some extremest have against our nation and our way of life, it would be difficult for them to sleep at night knowing that while they are sleeping, someone half way around the world is plotting their death.

I believe that even though most Americans are tired of the War in Iraq, down deep inside they do not want us to leave Iraq immediately. Most folks know that victory is always better than defeat and they also know that there will be consequences for an early U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq. Just like in Vietnam, an early and quick U.S. troop withdrawal will cause a bloodbath for those that supported U.S. efforts in that country and the United States should not turn it's back on friends even if it seems like the politically correct thing to do for some ambitious U.S. lawmakers.

Rudy Giuliani Could Change GOP Forever

There are some people in the GOP that fear Rudy Giuliani more than Hillary Clinton, in fact many extreme social conservatives would prefer Hillary Clinton as our next president if Rudy Giuliani is the GOP nominee. In both the Republican and Democratic Party's there are extreme elements that see the world from a very narrow point of view and there number one goal in life is to convert as many people as possible to that same narrow viewpoint.

If Rudy Giuliani wins the GOP nomination for president and is eventually elected to office, he could very well change the power structure of the GOP for decades. No longer would social conservative leaders have a guaranteed place at the table when important issues like abortion and stem cell research are discussed at the highest levels of government. That is the reason some conservatives would prefer Hillary over Rudy in the 2008 race for the White House.

If there is a mistake that can be made in a person's life, Rudy Giuliani has made it and most of his mistake are on the record for anyone to read about. For social conservatives, mistakes of a moral nature are the worst ones a politicians can make because most social conservatives believe in a strict moral compass for politicians and on that front Rudy Giuliani fails miserably. The election of Rudy Giuliani as the next President of the United States and his possible reelection would put a moderate to liberal Republican in the White House for eight (8) years and the prospect of that happening scares many social conservative more than a President Hillary Clinton.

Carrie Underwood Dominates MTV CMT VH1

In the world of music, no one dominates cable television more than Carrie Underwood. While channel surfing it is easy to find Carrie Underwood on complete opposite channels when it comes to music format. Recently, I saw a Carrie Underwood video on MTV, CMT, GAC and VH1 all in the same one hour period. After thinking about all the music artist and groups in the world, I can't think of a single other person or group that has their video played on all four (4) of these music video channel's except for Carrie Underwood.

People love Carrie Underwood for different reasons. Some people like her because of her pure singing voice while other folks wish that the world had more Carrie Underwood's in it because she is a good role model for their children. Why MTV plays music video's from Carrie Underwood is something I don't understand, but I am glad they do. Most of the video's that are played on MTV are so far out of my idea of good music that I can't stay on that channel for more than a few minutes. I guess this is what happens when an old music savvy guy, like me, approaches 50 years old!

People of all ages like and respect Carrie Underwood for different reasons, but the good news is that most of those reasons are positive and reflect the kind of world that most folks want to live in. Like most of you, I am tired of reading and hearing about Hollywood misfits that were either born with a silver spoon in their mouth or somehow achieved great success without having to put in the time and effort to earn it. The real truth is that Carrie Underwood stands for what most people believe is right in this world and her amazing success and choices in life are adding to her appeal daily.

Carrie Underwood - My American Idol Hero

It has been hard to follow the latest folks that have competed on the number one rated television show in the land, American Idol, the past couple of years because none of the winners has been able to hold a candle to Carrie Underwood. I wrote yesterday about Carrie Underwood's love for chewing gum and fresh fruits like Limes and Lemons. How plain is that? Good plain in my view because what the world needs today isn't more of the like of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, but more of Carrie Underwood and her old fashion family values.

Rather than deciding which day she will show up to serve her latest jail sentence for DUI, Carrie Underwood is climbing the ladder of success the old fashion way, by earning it. In my view there are no real, long lasting, shortcuts to success. Yes, American Idol allowed Carrie Underwood to become a star much faster than it would have happened the old fashion way of traveling non stop to cities and town and radio stations trying to get noticed like Loretta Lynn did. However, winning American Idol will only get a person so far and the rest is up to them and there own desire to make a name for themselves and create a fan base to support that success.

Carrie Underwood is doing everything right and so far everything seems to be coming up roses for her and rightfully so. I have noticed that Carrie Underwood is currently touring the heartland of America rather than hanging out in Hollywood and following the all night party scene with the other young starlets. As long as Carrie Underwood continues to spend the majority of her time out among the people instead of trying to click her way to the top, she should be OK. However, as Carrie Underwood continues to grown in fame, there will be that ever present temptation to join the likes of Hilton, Lohan and Spears which I hope will be resisted at all costs by Ms. Underwood.

Even Garth Brooks Likes Keith Urban

To me, one of the biggest names in country music the past few decades has been Garth Brooks who recently said that "Keith Urban is a beautiful guy". Of course in a Hollywood taught world such a statement might call into question the true meaning behind Garth Brooks statement. However, in reality Brooks just gave Keith Urban a huge pat on the back and a wake up call that he will be back fighting against Keith Urban soon on the country music charts.

The past few weeks Keith Urban has been praising his wife Nicole Kidman as he tours the world. Rightfully so, Keith Urban is crediting his wife Nicole for helping him through many problems in his life including substance abuse. Isn't this what married couples are suppose to do; help each other when times are bad? From my upbring, yes that is exactly what a good marriage is suppose to be. However, in this throw it away world we live in today some people throw away their marriage if it breaks just as quickly as they would throw away a radio that quit working.

The more I see and read about the marriage of Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman the more I believe it might stand the test of time. Staying together takes more work than running to a divorce lawyer at the first sign of trouble. To me, the first test in a happy and long lasting marriage has been passed by both Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman and that step is to put your partners needs ahead of your own. While this act of selflessness sounds easy, it is not easy when most of us only think about how we can best satisfy our own needs before our partner.

LA Court Slaps Lindsay Lohan's Wrist

Don't you just love Hollywood justice? News was released today that Lindsay Lohan will spend only one (1) day in jail for her conviction on DUI charges. Lohan will also spend 36 months on probation and be forced to do community service. The LA DA said that Lindsay Lohan's sentence was right in line with what anyone else would get if charged with the same crime. Are there any law and order types left in Southern California? Do people actually go to jail when they do something as dangerous as driving a motor vehicle drunk and chasing someone down with their car?

I understand that California is the most liberal state in the union, but surely there are good liberals out there that see this situation is not good for their state or Lohan. Lindsay Lohan is a troubled girl that needs some tough love. Lohan will not get that tough love from her screwed up family, so the only people left to teach her right from wrong is the California court system. Now, in a way the court system in California is doing exactly the same thing Lindsay Lohan's parents have done her entire life and that is slap her on the wrist and prove to her once again there are no serious consequence for bad/criminal behavior.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't want to see Lindsay Lohan rot in a California jail for years. However, the punishment she received for a very serious crime is a total joke and would not be handled in the same way in most parts of the United States. Especially in Hollywood, young actresses like Lindsay Lohan need the court system to act as the good parents they don't have, but unfortunately Lindsay Lohan not only has a couple of terrible parents to learn from; but also a California criminal justice system that goes out of it's way not to punish the acts of criminals.

General David Petraeus Report Next Month

I guess something is flying right over my head with all the talk of troop withdrawal and reductions today because from everything I have read and seen, the General Petraeus troop surge is not only working in Iraq, but it is working very well. Today, I hear a news headline on the radio that says Senator John Warner is now encouraging President Bush to draw down U.S. troops in Iraq before Christmas.

Excuse me, but isn't the reason things are going well in Iraq right now because of the increased presents of U.S. troops? Why in the world would a sitting U.S. Senator want to draw down troops to a level that would guarantee failure in Iraq? The biggest mistake President Bush made was not sending enough troops to Iraq in the first place and when he corrected that mistake now life on the ground in Iraq is better not only for the people that live there, but also for our soldiers.

There is something very crazy about the debate going on right now in Washington D.C. and as a well read man I don't understand why Republicans are ready to join the Democrats in a plan that will guarantee defeat in Iraq. Maybe this is just election year politics, but there is more at stake here than the reelection possibilities for the Senator from Virginia. President Bush has learned from his previous mistake of not sending enough troops to fight in Iraq and now just when his new policy is starting to work, some Members of Congress are dead set on seeing the U.S. fail in Iraq for what looks like purely political reasons.

Carrie Underwood - Lemons Limes Chewing Gum

In a world full of spoiled rotten stars, country music singer Carrie Underwood seems to take a different path almost every time. In a story on the WSYR Channel 9 website, they outline some of the demands major entertainers expect when they preform at the local fair.

From crazy items to regular everyday stuff are all part of what singers expect when they preform at the fair. The writer of this WSYR story thought some of the items that Carrie Underwood requested were strange, but to me it was a breath of fresh air to see a beautiful young woman demand things like chewing gum and fresh fruits like lemons and limes.

I must admit that I am a big fan of lemons and limes as well; maybe that is why I enjoy listening to Carrie Underwood sing! As for the chewing gum, well I stopped chewing that stuff a long time ago but I did enjoy my fair share of the stuff during my young years here on the Earth. Regular readers here know that I think Carrie Underwood is very special and nothing in this story has changed my view about this young woman who is giving young girls everywhere a positive role model to look up to in a very messed up world.

Iraq Troop Surge Working - al-Maliki Not

Just yesterday, President Bush went out of his way to praise Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki saying that he was a good man with a very tough job. Now this morning I wake up to news all over the Internet suggesting that U.S. intelligence agencies have a different view of al-Maliki and these agencies do not believe that the Prime Minister has what it takes to reform Iraq.

To me, these new reports from not identified people at U.S. intelligence agencies looks more like a democratic effort to take success away from the Bush administration's Iraq troop surge policy in order to try and keep the American people totally upset by American involvement in Iraq. Conservatives like Rush Limbaugh have been saying for months that the democratic party is invested in defeat and on this point he might just be correct.

If Americans just sit down and think this Iraq War situation out to a conclusion rather than taking at face value what is reported to them by the New York Times or told to them by President Bush, most people would probably side with President Bush. There is no good outcome in a speedy withdrawal from Iraq because our withdrawal would cause a huge bloodbath there the same as when America lost it's will and removed troops from Vietnam.

There are some people in the United States that hate President Bush so much that they would cause even a bigger human tragedy in Iraq just to see him hurt further in public opinion. The time for debating the wisdom of going into Iraq has come and gone and hopefully most Americans will start to demand victory from our leaders instead of defeat.

Don Imus Has Very Loyal Fans

The past week or so I have been expressing my views here that I believe Don Imus should hang up his spurs and retire to his ranch in New Mexico. Like with any emotional issue, my comments came under fire from some people that really like listening to Don Imus and some of them let their views be known here. I discovered after making my comments about Don Imus that there are blogs that contain many fans and they are quick to defend him even after his comments about the Rutgers Women's Basketball team.

I love freedom of speech and any time I give my point of view about anyone that is famous, I usually get several email's and blog comment postings from folks that think I am wrong. Most of the time when that happens I have a smile on my face because it proves to me what a great country I live in when it allows me to speak my mind online while at the same time allowing people that think I am full of hot air to totally disagree with my point of view.

It has become clear to me that even if I think Don Imus should retire and spend the rest of his life helping dying children achieve their dreams at his New Mexico ranch. There are other people that believe Don Imus was cheated out of his job by a politically correct world that places the wishes of folks like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson above there own personal moral values. On that point I agree with the people that think Don Imus was treated badly by CBS Radio.

As to whether Don Imus returns to the airwaves or not it really doesn't matter to me because I probably won't listen. However, I do understand that millions of people did like listening to Don Imus and to them they feel like they were cheated out of his daily radio program by a bunch of extremist that want to control free speech in the United States.

Nancy Pelosi V. Sheehan - Speaker Wins

As Cindy Sheehan prepares to challenge Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her House of Representatives seat, it becomes more clear everyday the differences between Nancy Pelosi and Cindy Sheehan. The Republican Party has done an excellent job at painting Nancy Pelosi as a crazy San Francisco liberal, but compared to Cindy Sheehan - Nancy Pelosi looks like a sweet little moderate from Nebraska.

The big question for voters in Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district will be, do you really want a radical liberal like Cindy Sheehan representing you or is Nancy Pelosi just about right? I believe that Cindy Sheehan will destroy herself politically within the next few months and people in northern California will begin to see her as a "one trick poney" and a crazy one at that. Professional politicians like Nancy Pelosi have years of experience dealing with extremist like Cindy Sheehan and in the end Sheehan will not defeat Pelosi in Congress in 2008.

Most the latest news coming out of Iraq is positive as the U.S. troop surge seems to be working well. Even hardcore liberals are starting see that victory is possible in Iraq and if this good news continues, most mainstream democrats will drop there "get out of Iraq now" mantra and start talking about how victory in Iraq is good for America. No matter how good the news might be coming out of Iraq, extremist like Cindy Sheehan will continue to be against the war and as public opinion shifts from negative to positive on the War in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan will not be able to change her position because her entire campaign is built on hatred and most of the time optimism will win out over hatred and that is one fact Nancy Pelosi knows very well.

Don Imus Political Correctness Run-Amuck

I'm on record say that I think Don Imus should retire to his ranch in New Mexico and kiss all this controversy goodbye surrounding his racist remarks about the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team that got him fired at CBS Radio. Don Imus is a throw back to a different time and place where big named radio jocks could say pretty much anything they wanted to and get away with it. However, times have changed over the past 30 years and some people in radio, like Don Imus, have not been able to change with the times so eventually he will be toast anyway.

In recent years "The Don Imus Show" has had terrible ratings both on a national scale and at his flagship New York City radio station. When Don Imus was simulcast on MSNBC cable his audience was somewhere around 300,000 and 350,000 each morning which put him dead last when compared to Fox News and CNN. Don Imus had his day in radio and that day is over. Why ABC wants to take a chance on this guy is something I do not understand.

My guess is that ABC is being pressured by big name celebrities and national politicians that use to go on Don Imus' show and have fun talking with him and also they were able to move up the pecking order with their (click) piers in the process. Don Imus has a very young wife and child and more than likely he might prefer to retire, but future obligations to his family might be causing him to think twice about leaving the public spotlight and also his wife has been able to get free attention to her favorite causes because her husband has/had a national radio program.

Rutgers Kia Vaughn Sues Don Imus

From my point of view the worst thing that ever happened to the women on the Rutgers womens basketball team was not being called racist and vulgar names by radio shock jock Don Imus, but through the process being introduced to Al Sharpton. This once proud basketball team that made the world proud when they made their first public appearance after Don Imus insulted them on national radio and television could now be turning from a group of hard working and successful women into an Al Sharpton group of victims.

One of the members of the Rutgers basketball team in question, Kia Vaughn, has filed a lawsuit against Don Imus in an effort to win money because she now claims that he has hurt her reputation by his comments. Nothing will turn what was a wonderful winning moment for these fine young women into a disgrace faster than filing a lawsuit which will make them look like nothing more than a bunch of Al Sharpton's victims trying to get ahead by taking money away from someone else who made a mistake.

The natural human tendency is to hurt someone back when they hurt you. Of course, we all know this feeling by it's real name, revenge. I doubt if Kia Vaughn really expects to win any money from her lawsuit and I also believe that what is driving her decision to sue Don Imus is more about revenge than actually believing that her reputation has been harmed by his stupid comments. If Kia Vaughn's lawsuit proceeds against Don Imus this smart and talented young woman will be used at every turn by Al Shapton to further his own goals and not hers. The sad truth is that at the end of the day, Kia Vaughn could turn out looking worse than Don Imus and that would be a truly terrible thing to happen.

John McCain Wants Don Imus Back

In less than a healthy vote of confidence, presidential candidate and Arizona Senator John McCain said yesterday that he wanted Don Imus back on the air. As a regular guest, John McCain use to have fun joking back and forth with Don Imus when his show was on MSNBC and CBS radio. As I have said before, the Don Imus Show was a huge inside the beltway click that most members of the national news media and politicians wanted to be invited to appear on the show.

When Don Imus got into trouble for making some racist remarks a few months ago, CBS radio and MSNBC fired him and most people thought that Don Imus would just drift into the background and never be heard from again. However, like most things in life Don Imus decided to not quit his decades long radio career and after settling a lawsuit against his former employer CBS radio, he is set to accept a new deal from rival ABC that could put him back on the air within a matter of weeks.

In recent months it seems like John McCain cannot pick the right horse in any race. First Senator McCain decided that it would be a good idea to stand with Senator Edward Kennedy to support comprehensive immigration reform and now Senator McCain is backing Don Imus. John McCain's decision to go against 80% plus of the voting GOP folks in the primary cost him any chance of becoming the parties nominee in 2007. Now, John McCain is doing everything he can to run off moderates and liberals to his potential White House bit, as well, by backing Don Imus. All I can say is that campaigns for president are important because the voters need to see how each candidate responds during a long fought campaign and in that area Senator John McCain has come up short on all fronts.

Hurricane Dean Category 5 - Saffir-Simpson Scale

Zero hour for people that live and work on the Yucatan Peninsula is just about here and while almost everyone in the United States has heard of Cancun because of it's popular vacation beaches, there are other towns that will be effected by Hurricane Dean within the next few hours. Cities like Chetumal, Punta Allen and Playa del Carmen on the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Campeche, Merida and Progreso on the west coast.

Thousands of people that live in these sea side communities are about to have there lives turned upside down when Hurricane Dean plows through these small towns and villages and even if there is no loss of life, there will be homes and businesses of local residents that will be flattened to the ground under Hurricane Dean's massive Category 5 power. Right now many people are talking about the strength of hurricanes because Hurricane Dean is front page news. However, some people might not understand the Saffir-Simpson Scale so here is my attempt to explain it.

Saffir-Simpson Scale Category One (1) Hurricane:

Winds 74-95 mph (64-82 kt or 119-153 km/hr). Storm surge generally 4-5 ft above normal. No real damage to building structures.

Saffir-Simpson Scale Category Two (2) Hurricane:

Winds 96-110 mph (83-95 kt or 154-177 km/hr). Storm surge generally 6-8 feet above normal. Some roofing material, door, and window damage of buildings. Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some trees blown down.

Saffir-Simpson Scale Category Three (3) Hurricane:

Winds 111-130 mph (96-113 kt or 178-209 km/hr). Storm surge generally 9-12 ft above normal. Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures.

Saffir-Simpson Scale Category Four (4) Hurricane:

Winds 131-155 mph (114-135 kt or 210-249 km/hr). Storm surge generally 13-18 ft above normal. More extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failures on small residences.

Saffir-Simpson Scale Category Five (5) Hurricane:

Winds greater than 155 mph (135 kt or 249 km/hr). Storm surge generally greater than 18 ft above normal. Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. All shrubs, trees, and signs blown down.

Since Hurricane Dean is now a major Category 5 Hurricane, it is easy to see what the people of Mexico will be facing over the next two days. There is going to be a human disaster on a monumental scale caused by Hurricane Dean and hopefully the world's population will open it's arms and pocketbooks to help the people that will soon lose everything.

I remember watching a movie several years ago about a bunch of fishermen that were caught in what the movie referred to as "The Perfect Storm". This morning as I watched satellite images and computer animations of the power and movement of Hurricane Dean, that old movie keeps coming back into my mind. It is one thing to watch Hurricane Dean from afar, like I have been doing the past few days, and sitting directly in this hurricane's path and praying that it doesn't take your home or your life.

The next stop for Hurricane Dean on it's slow but steady path is the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and once landfall is made there new computer models of the actual path of this major hurricane could be changed dramatically. The Yucatan Peninsula is a large section of Mexico and most likely the Eye of Hurricane Dean will take direct aim at the center of this large land mass. Hurricane's have been known to do some pretty strange things once they are completely over land and there is a possibility that Hurricane Dean could vier north after losing some of it's power while passing over Mexico.

This is the reason why FEMA and the State of Texas are continuing to stay on alert even though most weather predictions are still saying that Mexico is the most probable final landfall destination for Hurricane Dean. All of us will know more tomorrow after the Yucatan Peninsula takes the full force of what is predicted to be a Category 5 Hurricane Dean at that time. Billions of dollars worth of property will be damaged and/or destroyed in Mexico and the United States over the next five days and while things can be replaced and rebuilt, people cannot and I hope folks down there keep that thought in mind as Hurricane Dean approaches.

Flash Floods Follow Hurricane Dean's Path

The big concern when a monster hurricane like Dean heads for land usually revolves around the potential loss of life and property due to high winds and tornadoes. However, there is a huge threat currently facing the mainland of Mexico and the United States that has nothing to do with high winds. Flash flooding from Mexico to Texas will take more lives and do more property damage than the initial landfall of Hurricane Dean.

The reason this fact gets ignored by the major news media is because flash flooding after a hurricane is harder to cover and takes place over a week or more period of time. Most of the major news media are much more interested in getting their good looking anchors on the shoreline and having there picture taken in 100 plus mile per hour winds. I think it is just plain silly when national news anchors are flown to the eye of a hurricane and dropped off with a camera crew and satellite hookup to report the landfall of a hurricane.

There could be thousands of people dead by this time next week all along Hurricane Dean's path and most of those deaths will result from people being caught in a flash flood without a way to escape. Many of these flash flood deaths will be hundreds of miles away from where Hurricane Dean makes landfall, but none the less there deaths were a direct result of Hurricane Dean and the massive amount of water that storm will continue to produce in the form of rain for the next several weeks.

President Bush Ready For Hurricane Dean?

President Bush is vacationing at his ranch just outside of Waco, Texas as Hurricane Dean approaches either the Texas Gulf Coast or Mexico. We will all know for sure the exact path that Hurricane Dean will take after it slams into Cancun later tomorrow. I wrote yesterday about the irony of President Bush being on vacation at his Crawford, Texas ranch as a potentially devastating hurricane approaches the United States.

In 2005, President Bush was also vacationing in Crawford, Texas as FEMA, under the direction of Michael Brown, was falling dreadfully short in his responsibilities as the Director of FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Even days later when President Bush finally decided to show up and see what rescue efforts were like on the ground in New Orleans, he still referred to Michael Brown as "Brownie" and proclaimed the progress of FEMA as wonderful at that time.

Of course, we all know now that Michael Brown, "Brownie" was not doing a wonderful job as thousands of people suffered in the 100 degree plus heat of August in Louisiana with no escape route. Fast forward two years and the memories of Michael Brown have faded for most people, but for some of us old "Brownie" is still front and center in our minds as Hurricane Dean could threaten the United States once again and as millions of Americans are asking themselves if the Bush administration will be able to manage a major disaster better this time than after Hurricane Katrina in 2005?

My current thinking is yes. The Bush administration learned a valuable lesson about natural disasters and the toll it can take on a President and the people of a nation if it is not handled right. While most people believe that Hurricane Dean will not hit the U.S. directly, I believe President Bush and FEMA will not make the same mistake twice and believe weather forecasts that sometimes can be misleading at best.
