California Chrome Loses To Fresh Horse Tonalist At Belmont

One of the owners of California Chrome was extremely bitter today when another horse won the Belmont Stakes. His point was, the winner, Tonalist, was a fresh horse that did not race in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness Stakes. While Chrome's owner does have a point, there is nothing in the rules that forbids a qualified horse from competing in one, two or all three races. That fact is why it is so hard for any one horse to win all three legs of the Triple Crown. California Chrome is a very good horse, but he is not great. At least not in comparison to Secretariat, probably the best racehorse of all time. I'm sure in the days and weeks to come, California Chrome's owner will regret making those bitter comments on national television. Sure he's disappointed, but you can't change the rules in the middle of the game just to win a victory you didn't earn. Maybe next year.
